Her Second Best Tout: A Guy Who Dated Her
Over on Marvin Olasky's World blog, a fascinating series of posts based on an interview with one Nathan Hecht (a TX Supreme Court Judge now), who is "very close friends" with Miers and even "dated" her "some." Hecht says Miers belonged to a "fundamentalist" church back in Dallas and has views on abortion that evangelicals will be very comfortable with. For more blog reaction, check out The Blogometer. Hecht's description of Valley View as a "conservative evangelical" church is really closer to the mark; the congregation is a mix of north Dallas suburban evangelicals and a smaller number of hard-core "spiritual warfare" types. Miers seems to be in the former group -- conservative but not a Ted Haggard type.
Interestingly, it's hard to get a read on her even from within her church. One congregant called her "self-effacing" and told me, "I know her as a welcoming committee member, the woman who handed me a cup of coffee." He said that he believes most congregants probably don't know even today that the new SCOTUS nominee is a member of their church. (One person's first response was, "Really? I thought she looked familiar!")
