About Those Rumsfeld Rumors...

It did not escape the notice of Washington wags that on the third anniversary of the commencement of major combat operations in Iraq, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was nowhere to be seen on the Sunday shows.

And in an era when resignation rumors are, shall we say, overdetermined, his absence once again predictably is fueling an onslaught of Monday morning rumors.

They don't seem to be true, but several news organizations are chasing them anyway.

If Washington wags actually knew what was going on in their own city, Sunday was a gala day and evening at the Kennedy Center, where Placido Domingo, Director of Washington National Opera, was being feted with a specially-written new opera by Marvin Hamlisch. Mrs Rumsfeld was on the Organising Committee of the big event. Were I not in Old Europe I would have been there, but one assumes Rummy was there the whole time to support his wife at the dinner and gala. They are both big supporters of the arts, and he definitely never goes grouse-shooting..
