Have A Heart

This has to be just about the nastiest piece of direct mail we've ever seen.

A candidate for State Assembly in the central valley region of CA, Bill Conrad (R) is apparently running on the platform that his opponent won't survive his term because he had a heart transplant.

Attack line: 'Tom Berryhill doesn't have the HEART for State Assembly'

The full mail can be found here and here.

billy Comrad needs to become a organ donner, since he is obviously brain dead.

Where is the "paid and authorized" statement? It seems to be missing.

The voters in your district have a real choice now--- between a Republican candidate who has somebody else's heart and one who has none at all.

Of course a Democrat will win in your district!

People who live in or around Modesto should drop by Mr. Conrad's volunteer appreciation party next week to let him know personally what a great guy he is for running such a sleazy ad. It will be worth the ten bucks to ensure "fun for everyone."

Join us on Thursday, May 25th starting at 5:00 PM for a BBQ fundraiser and volunteer appreciation dinner at Tony and Colleen Ippoleto's house. The event will be held at:

6106 Snedigar Road, Oakdale CA.

The cost is $10 per person. To reserve your tickets, please call the campaign office at (209) 557-2567.

There will be food and fun for everyone.

What cabn you expect from a Repuglican?

Being a Republican substantially ups the chances of you not being able to serve your full term - since it's statistically likely you'll be in jail.

What a nasty nasty SOB, why doesn't he mention the numerous heart complications his other SOB Republica lover Cheney has and the numerous heart procedures he has undergone on our dime!!!

This is incredibly low - but, then, what do you expect of these people?

They all need to go far, far away.

We can all pray that this Rapture thing really works and takes all these people off planet.

Then, maybe, freedom and sanity can come back to live in America.

better to have a heart transplant than to be COMPLETELY HEARTLESS.

a real class act. it sure makes me proud to be a democrat.

It doesn't surprise me a bit. Republicans are nasty players while all the time preening themselves as having God on their side. Disgraceful.

This is more proof that the Republicans are
truly heartless, nothing is beneath them, nothing
too low. They would sell their own Mother's
hearts to win. And these are the same slimeballs
who tout, their "family values," their "Christian
values." With this letter, Bill Conrad is less
than pond scum, and once again it is clear for
all to see what the Republicans really stand for
and how nothing and I mean nothing is below them.

Is this the 7 year figure even factually correct? They quote "Average" but it really should be based opn the person.

How long will I live after a heart transplant?
The lifespan of heart transplant recipients vary widely, depending largely on how sick the patient was before the transplant. Naturally, younger, healthier patients can expect to live longer than patients who are over 65, or who have other problems such as high pressure in the blood vessels of their lungs do.

Heart transplant survival rates at Henry Ford Health System are significantly higher than national norms. About 90 percent of our transplant recipients live for at least one year after transplant. About 75 percent live for at least five years. And about 60 percent live for ten years or longer.

Berryhill is in my district. His own advertising is "Tom Berryhill, a CONSERVATIVE Republican". Frankly, let 'em all cannibalize each other. They aren't good for much else.

Plus - They're gonna lose. They won't beat the Democrat who'se an incumbent (even though he is a little too conservative for me).

"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security."

Ben Franklin, 1759

Always knew Repub's were mean and low. But this proves it.

In 1975 at Wyoming Boys' State I ran for County Surveyor against a guy named Jesse Overy. So I put up an illustrated campaign poster that said "Overy Laid an egg. Vote Tom Lowe for County Surveyor." The illustration was of a big egg.

I won, of course.

The message is: in politics, do what works--as long as it is legal. Good taste in politicking is just an unnecessary afterthought.

Anyone who runs for political office with a heart transplant is just asking to kill himself and his judgement is therefore questionable to begin with.

Once again this reminds us that Republicans will go to ANY length to win. I hope the Democrats finally see what the true playing field is all about.

I'm sorry I wasted my time visiting your sad-ass site!!

Un-f**king-believable. Until you remember it's coming from the Republican Party. 'Nuff said.

This is just plain sick. I think most Republicans will be repulsed by this ad.

Please don't discourage this kind of campaigning. It's good for the Democrats. Rebublicans can no longer attack on anything substanitive, and only recently went to playing the God card. When that didn't work, it looks like they will resort to health issues. What's next? Maybe the party-of-no-ideas-and-no ability-to-implement-them will resort to looks or weight issues.

Bill Conrad's supporters should stone him. His campaign tactic should be evidence enough not to elect him.

What a dick

what a dick

I called Bill Conrad upon seeing this info. He returned my call quickly and personally.

I expressed my sense of outrage to him about the inappropriate nature of the piece.

In my view, he simply made excuses for it. He began to explain that he was far behind in financing and needed to get attention. He explained that it was only one of several points made in the publication.

I responded that he might have all the wonderful political points in the world to make, but this was outside of the politics and no other issues justified its publication. It was a matter of human decency and character.

He continued to talk about the wrongs of his opponent's position, about the problem wit Gerrymandering in California, and he indicated that he'd asked someone - I think it was the local paper - if they'd feel it was relevant if a candidate had a heart transplant and they said yes, it would be, and so he feels it's a legitimate issue to tell voters about.

He also argued that his opponent is a 'radical right winger' who is the sort that's the problem with the republican party screwing everything up today - an argument sympathetic to a liberal - but I indicated again that the political issues did not justify the ad.

I made analogies to this being in the same category as the 'McCain has a black child out of wedlock' ads, or to ads attacking the opponents' children or parents.

I asked him if upon reflection he saw the problem I was raising about its being wrong, and he simply said that the way it was raised might have been wrong and he'd change some words but the point was legitimate to make. He cited campaign fatigue, bed at 1 and up at 6, as possibly damaging his judgement (though he said this was a problem for both he and his opponent.)

He asked for the URL to this posting and I said I'd send it, and will do so.

You should show up at the campaign function and toss cow hearts at him (or whatever hears you can buy at the grocery store)

I sent this e-mail to Mr. Conrad.
Dear Sir.
Mr. conrad to attack Tom Berryhill for his sceond chance at life with a Hear Transpant is horrible and vile thing to say. You have no ideal what this man went though and quit clear don't care!
I to am a Heart transplant patient.
Just another republican hack will say or done anything to get in office. There is a special place in HELL waiting for you! Hope you lose. Jim Childers

I hadn't seen this and it may be my Congressional District -18th - Dennis Cardoza. I know his predecessor was from Modesto (the well known Gary Condit).

Let them cannibalize each other. My "blue dog" Congressman upsets me from time to time but he beats the alternative.

I missed the State Assembly part of that post. Big oops.

Typical GOP family value move.

Mr. Berryhill is a survivor and a stronger man that Conrag will ever be.

I know this because I had open heart surgery to replace my aortic valve with a mechanical valve.

Conrag should apologize and withdraw from this race. This proves the GOP should never be voted into any office.

More than 30 years ago the Republican challenger to Michgan Senator Phil Hart ran billboards stating that "Michigan has Hart trouble." The challenger was never heard from again.

This was an issue with Cheney and his heart and he didn't even have a heart transplant. But if you do your reseach I don't think that this Berryhill guy has a heart. He wants to put any elected officials in jail if they violate "Marriage Laws". I guess he would be happy if the Mayor of SF was in Jail.

On Berryhill website:

Protecting Traditional Marriage
San Francisco's law-breaking politicians and their supporters in the Legislature must understand that they should be held accountable. I will introduce a bill that if passed will send public officials to jail for breaking California's marriage laws.

I'm suprized cheney is still breathing

Having a heart transplant is easier than finding a ploitical party these days

Email sent to Bill Conrad 5.24.06
Dear Bill,

You are a loser in more ways than one.You should not have played the heart transplant card, it only enhanced the emptiness of your candidacy.
Should your knowledge of your district and the Assembly be as replete as your knowledge of heart transplant survival rates, you are apparently a double loser. The half-life of a heart transplant as of today is twelve years.
I am confident the polls will show on June 6, you are a TOTAL LOSER and you can crawl back into the hole you came out of.

Mr Berryhill has more heart and courage than you will ever have, he will win June 6 and then he will win in the General election and serve his constituents well.He will survive both elections ,and he will survive to see your political ambitions die an ignominious death.
Finally, here are some web sites you can read for accurate up-to-date information about heart transplant living and survival to add to your vast knowledge of the subject learned from data from one book published 2001 ref. Cardiovascular Disease not cardiothoracic surgery(heart transplant).www.unos.org and www.organdonor.gov ,these sites will provide current info re heart transplant.

Michael Wymbs-Heart Transplant recipient,NJ, Veteran, U.S. Army

Being a heart transplant myself (six years out) I find the transplant comments crude. I think it is a desperate candidate and there are too many of those these days. Republicans and Democrats both seem to qualify. You don't have to be a politician to make an ass of yourself.
