Just because you apologize for calling someone a nasty, mean name in public, and get caught doing it, does not make it OK that you said it. Obviously this is part of Allen's normal speaking habit, to demean and use derogatory language when speaking about people of color.

Context is important. Allen was speaking in front of a friendly, exclusively Caucasian audience of Republicans in the heart of redneck country. He used Sidarth in the same way he'd use a photo of a convicted terrorist or civil rights protestor.

"He's not one of US," was Allen's message. "We're white and clean, he's dark and dirty." Too much emphasis has been placed on the word "macaca." If Allen had said "nigger" or "darkie," the meaning to a redneck would have been the same. Allen knew his audience, and knew exactly what he was doing.

Oh, come on! Democrats always want to make something out of nothing. It's not racist! What idiots they are. It's a made-up word. Democrats would rather focus on this than real issues, like why they don't support the Patriot Act, the NSA wiretapping program, the data-mining program, the Iraq war, and all anti-terrorism measures. They just want to procrastinate and won't say the terror threat is "imminent" until a bomb is one minute from hitting us.

If he had said this to a black man his political career would be finished. Since the Indian community does not have the political clout, he may still hang in there.

The senator should be ashamed of himself. why did it take 10 days for an apology? A real man would take all but 10 minutes. How hard is it really to say your sorry and give a heart felt apology? his Political career has been wounded and his presidential campaign . . most definately finished. What a complete fool. I think that Allen is only sorry that he got caught. He's typical of the pompous , arrogant right winged war-profiteering cowards that currently are choking the life out of our once great nation.

Allen could only have meant the word in a derogatory way... pretending it's a "mash up" of two other words is condescending and pathetic, insulting on his part, and naive on the part of anyone who believes it.
And I agree that he only apologized because he wanted people to shut up about it. I doubt he was sorry he said it for any other reason than: it got him in trouble.
There is, as someone earlier pointed out, a bright side. Allen can speak French! That's nice, isn't it?
