Breaking: Warner May Not Run In '08

Ex-VA Gov. Mark Warner plans to make a major announcement today about his 2008 presidential bid, three Virginia Democratic sources said. According to two Virginia Democrats who have been formally briefed, Warner is expected to say that he has decided not to run for president in 2008. Warner will speak to Virginia reporters at 11:00 am ET. A Warner spokeswoman declined to comment. [CHUCK TODD]

It boggles my mind why these guys feel the need to draw attention to themselves with the mid-term elections only weeks away.

All you politicians with presidential ambitions, kindly keep it to yourselves until after the election. Thank you.

shocking...wonder what was found in his closet?

I hope this isn't true since Warner is a rather strong candidate -- but then again, it would narrow the field for some other very desirable candidates, Bayh, Edwards, Biden, and Clark, specifically.

that means there's some major warner scandal coming, right?

Dang! I was looking forward to picking Mark Warner over John McCain in November '07.

The good news is that this clears the field for the Hon. George "Macaca" Allen to win by a landslide!

:)

Get out your tin foil hats, Clinton haters!

If Warner's not running for president after all this, I find it ridiculous that he didn't challenge George Allen this year. I think Warner is NOT endearing himself to the base.

I already have Warner - Clark '08 bumbper stickers on my car!!!!

Say it 'sint so.

He's probably already gotten the nod for VP on Hillary's ticket.

No, its not damaging to the mid-terms. I think that this is a case of Warner having decided that he does not want to run and that this would be an opportune time to say so, thus breaking the current North Korea news cycle and returning attention to the issue of elections.

It refocuses attention on the national scene which is what we need. It focuses attention on the dufus in chief and the need to have a competent president.

It will also refocus attention on the fact that George 'Maccaca' Allen is not running for the Presidency either.

Seems like Edwards is probably the biggest beneficiary of this, followed by Bayh and then Vilsack. There's no question Warner would've beat Allen handily this year. The lone poll taken in July 05 between the two had Warner leading Allen 47-42. That would be much bigger now with the strongly Democratic climate and Allen's repeated gaffes. Webb may not be able to win, and if he does he won't be as good as Warner would have. They say Mark Warner may run for Senate in 08 if John Warner retires, but do we really know that that's going to happen? And would a second Warner-Warner race end any better than the last one? It seems like a second bid for Governor in 09 is his fallback now. What good is that? If he wasn't going to run for president, he should've run for Senate against Allen. If Webb loses and John Warner runs again, all is for naught.
