'08 Endorsement Watch: The NRA

An occasional series of posts on the presidential endorsement processes for major interest groups.

Organization: The National Rifle Association (NRA)

According to NRA Public Affairs Dir. Andrew Arulanandam, the NRA Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) typically endorses candidates after the nat'l conventions. Approaching '08, the NRA-PVF will survey all WH '08ers (regardless of party affiliation) on issues of interest to the association.

After taking the answers of the party nominees into consideration, as well as their voting records and public statements, the NRA-PVF determines whether or not to endorse a candidate. Note: The NRA has not given its endorsement in every recent WH presidential contest (as in '92 and '96) [AMY DUDLEY]

Among top tier candidates, either Mitt Romney or Fred Thompson should get the NRA endorsement.

Ron Paul is the ONLY one that deserves the NRA's endorsement! MITT ROMNEY?? you have got to be kidding me!

I hope that the NRA chooses to endorse a true friend of the second amendment, not a RINO (Republican in name only). I hope they endorse Ron Paul.

As a NRA member for many years, I endorse Ron Paul for President, and request that the NRA also endorse him.

The only eligible candidate is Mike Huckabee. The NRA should follow suit.

Ron Paul is the only real conservative in the bunch. He has a proven track record of being pro 2nd amendment. If the NRA doesnt endorse him and endorses one of the neocons they can consider me noonger a member

Ron Paul's track record of upholding our Constitution and the second amendment and his honesty is superior to his opponents. He's a true patriot!

Mike Huckabee deserves the NRA endorsement and the vote of every Christian.

I am a lifetime member of the NRA, my brother is a lifetime member of the nra, my wife is a member of the nra my uncle is a member of the nra and just about everyone else in my extended family is also included in NRA membership. The only candidate that truly supports the 2nd amendment is RON PAUL! He doesn't talk about locks on guns like thompson and he isn't plain anti gun like rudy and mitt. Huckabee isn't in the race as he is broke. McCain is weak also. RON PAUL 08 is the only endorsement possible from the NRA unless they pander and if that is the case I want nothing to do with them and will request they remove me as a member. Well not just me. Me, my wife, my daughter, my son , my brother, my uncles and so on...

I agree the as an NRA member Ron Paul should be the only logical choice for a endorsement.

Ron Paul is the ONLY one who wants to make the gov. smaller, and to let gun owners retain their constitutional rights! He is THE CHAMPION of the constitution! Vote for Ron Paul and only Ron Paul!

The only choice possible is RON PAUL because he upholds our constituional right to bear arms. He also consistantly supports all other points of our constitution based on his perfect track record as a US congressman. None of the other candidates seem to give that same kind of committment and passion towards our constitution. John Adams once said, "A constitutional government once changed from freedom, can never be restored. Liberty once lost, is lost forever." Please vote for Ron Paul, he is our hope for America!

As an NRA member for eight years, it is my opinion as well as the clear consensus of most of the posters that it is time for the NRA to start representing its members instead of playing ball with the establishment, and establishment candidates. Listen up, NRA-if you guys sell us out, I will no longer bother with you, and I will reunite with other posters like Tiffany, Melvin, and Gerv's family over at Gun Owners of America, who didn't hesitate to endorse Ron Paul.

In the words of Rush Limbaugh "Fred Thompson is the only true conservative in the top tier of Republican candidates".

TEH NRA NEEDS TO MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHO THEY WILL ENDORSE BEFORE THE CHOICE IS MADE FOR THEM. TIME IS RUNNING OUT

MITT ROMNEY DOESN'T EVEN OWN A GUN AND WOULD HAVE TO CONSULT HIS ATTORNEY BEFORE HE WOULD EVEN CONSIDER THE POSSIBILTY

RON PAUL WOULD NEVER USE A GUN BECAUSE HE MIGHT PISS SOMEONE SOMEWHERE OFF

RUDY GUILIANI IS JUST ANTI 2ND AMENDMENT

JOHN MCCAIN IS SIMPLY TIRED OF GUNS

AND HUCKLEBERRY OR GOMER PYLE HUCKABEE WOULD NEED TO PRAY BEFORE USING A GUN

FRED THOMPSON is the right choice. He is a real conservative and could really use the endorsement. The partnership of NRA and FDT would kick donkey tail!!

Mike Huckabee 100% deserves the endorsement. What's up with Paul, he's far from conservative, he's as crazy as they get.

The NRA I think will lose alot of memberships if they do not endorse or support Congressman Ron Paul. He's the only candidate who truly defends the Constitution and gun rights...as originally written! No other candidate even comes close to what the NRA is suppose to stand for, so it would be suspicious NOT to back him. I have always voted Democratic until this election cycle, during which my vote will go to Dr.Paul.

RON PAUL is the only candidate who has the wisdom to not compromise legislation of the second ammendment! He stands firm on the constitution as our foundation. We better take heed to this as our first ammendment is under attack to be taken away from us with bill HR 1955 that is up for senate vote right now! The second ammendment will be next. If the NRA does not endorse RON PAUL then my trust in them will be gone. They will be no different then any other politician!

Ron Paul is THE only choice for the NRA endorsement. Romney will turn the country into Massachusetts, ie. the worst state for your Second Amendment rights!
Ron Paul's record is clean and consistent. Come on NRA, give your endorsement where is it DESERVED!

I am withholding renewing my NRA membership until they openly endorse Ron Paul. They could not ask, beg or plead for a better candidate to support, unless the true aims of the NRA are other than the publicly stated aims. If their real goal is political power for the sake of things other than their member's 2nd amendment rights, then they have no right to expect their member's continued support, and NOT supporting Ron Paul would make more sense from that perspective. If they don't support Ron Paul, you can bet it's because they are LYING about their true agenda. Make your decisions accordingly.

It's already been said but I want to say it also, "Ron Paul is the only choice"

I am a 20 year NRA member and I can only endorse a candidate I trust to follow through with what he/she says. Fred Thompson is the only candidate, Left or Right, that has proven to be true to his word throughout his political career. He seems driven by a desire to help make a difference and not to gain power or make political hay.

I am a proud member of the NRA and also a proud supporter of Dr. Ron Paul.

Best overall? Absolutely Fred Thompson. Top tier Candidate with the best record.

As a life member of the NRA, Ron Paul is the ONLY choice for NRA endorsement. Texas Congressman Ron Paul's pro-gun credentials are impeccable and he has been a leading proponent of rolling back the past 40 years of gun control.

I like Ron Paul a lot - he's got great beliefs, but I don't like his stance on the war. We need to finish the job, not pull out.

I'm a NRA member, as are my father and brother, and we support Huckabee. Huckabee was the first governor in America to have a concealed carry permit. He’s eloquent and sincere – I think he’d be able to lead this Nation toward enacting the Fair Tax.

Here’s what Huckabee told Hugh Hewitt during an interview:
******HH:…What about assault weapons, or what is called assault weapons in the law? Should Americans be allowed to have them?
MH: Absolutely. Americans ought to be allowed to have anything they want to have, as long as they’re law abiding, legal citizens.
*******
Thompson looks unhealthy and tired – give him some coffee. He looks to disinterested.

Romney has a gun grabbing past, and I've read that he supported gay scout leaders. I don't like his past flip flops, and some vague stances on other issues. I can take care of my own wallet as long as we’re free to be born and have our guns.

Giuliani, well at least you know what he believes - a known evil. I don't think he'd dare touch our guns... He knows his place. I think he would be good on the war.

Duncan who? I hear he's good, but he needs to get a following. However, all of the republican candidates are better than HC, Barack, and the ambulance chaser.’

Oh, yeah, McCain – well I’m from AZ and I vote for him over the democrat. I don’t really like how McCain has voted the past decade or so…

I have been a police officer for 25 years. Have been following Ron Paul for much of that time. I do believe he is the best candidate for understanding and committment to our Constitution and therefore our Second Ammendment Rights. The way our country is being undermined by the "extreme left", aka Socialists, it may be about time to start exercising those rights!

It is going to come down to the lesser of two evils. I think Clinton and Romney are wolves in sheep clothing...buyer beware!

When is the NRA going to step up and proclaim Ron Paul as the only acceptable choice to uphold our constitutional rights?

Bob Barr deserves the NRA's endorsement over John McCain!
