Romney Wins A South Carolina Straw Poll
This proves he's still popular with the young 'uns.
Ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney won the SC Colleagiate Republican Organization's straw poll yesterday. Ironically, the SCCRO's convention this year was keynoted by State Sen. John Courson, a major backer of Sen. John McCain's. No word on whether -- or how much -- Romney's campaign paid to move the vote here.
Mitt Romney 53% Rudy Giuliani 19% John McCain 15%

An offensive post and you know why. "STILL popular"? and the money thing without any suggestion of paid orchestration. You can come up with a much fairer post. I've seen you guys do better.
Romney pays for everything. PERIOD.
Hey Joe M, where is your evidence?
Joe M. ~
You're accusing Romney of "buying" this or any vote on what grounds / evidence? Truth be known, look at what the artical says - that a supporter of McCain was the keynote speaker, and yet Romney still won the vote even without showing up!
Romney won the vote because he is the best republican candidate available to date. Also, lets not forget that politics are about money, but McCain has more campaign funds than Romney at this point, so your argument is weak...
If thats the case I wish he could tell where he buys the talent to succeed at everything he does. I want some of that.
Oh Joe and dioot Jacosta, how about some proof.
ROMNEY is the best candidate in either party - far ahead of his rivals in intelligence, experience, character, etc., Smart people do their homework! ...and know who the best candidate is.
Did you know that Mitt Romney never took a paycheck for his time as Gov. of MASS?
I heard he didn't take a salary for the Olympics. Are you saying he didn't take a salary in Mass, either? Amazing in a good way. But, there are some who apparently think he pays for all his support. Lot's of money going out while none is coming in, eh?
Hmmmm, I wonder how many other politicians forego their salaries. Not so many, I would guess.
I can't wait for the real debates. That will be interesting.
How many people participated in this staw poll?
How did they know which Mitt Romney they were voting for?
John McCain is basically turning into a has-been. The same will become true of Rudy Giuliani.
John McCain has left the grass roots conservatives, who give much money, time and effort for candidates, fuming-mad at his left-leaning, evolving political tendancies and at his recent snubs to their invitations for him to speak at their gatherings.
Rudy Giuliani has got post 9/11 rescue workers health issues, family moral issues and an anti-conservative agenda on his plate that he will have to deal with. His support will go down as Mitt Romney's support increases.
Yea!
Go Mitt Go!
if you want to know about someone .... check the people who know him .. and what they say ...
In West Texas, you learn a lot about a person by shaking their hand and looking them in the eye. .... look at Romney's experience ... and his record ..... he is clearly qualified to be our next president .... but his real abilities and qualifications shine through when you meet him. Gov. Mitt Romney is the right choice for president
As a second term Congressman from West Texas, I fully intended to keep my powder dry in the presidential race for quite a while. I had no intention of endorsing any of the candidates and simply wanted to meet a couple of them when they were in Austin a few weeks ago. Having read all the newspapers and Web sites for the last few months, I figured I knew what to expect.
It is said that every presidential election is the most important election ever. Well, this time that sentiment might be true. We are fighting wars on many fronts - from the war against violent Islamic jihadists around the world to the war on government spending here at home. We need our next president to have the experience necessary to keep Americans safe and our economy prosperous. I believe former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is that person.
In West Texas, you learn a lot about a person by shaking their hand and looking them in the eye. If you look at Romney's experience and his record, he is clearly qualified to be our next president, but his real abilities and qualifications shine through when you meet him.
Romney has been a leader his whole life. Whether in business as one of the most successful venture capitalists in America, as the CEO who rescued the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City from corruption and debt, or as governor of Massachusetts, Romney has showed the executive level experience that we need in our next president.
We face many challenges as a nation. We need a president who will bring a new type of leadership to Washington - a proven leader that can unite our nation and lead to a stronger America. As governor of Massachusetts, Romney held to his conservative values while working with one of the most liberal state legislatures in the country.
By focusing on what they could agree on, rather than on what they couldn't, Gov. Romney had great successes in producing a balanced budget each year of his term and closing a $3 billion budget deficit without raising taxes or resorting to new government borrowing. He also signed a plan into law affording every state citizen health insurance without raising taxes or creating a huge new government bureaucracy.
A strong believer in family values, Romney believes, as do I, that America's strength lies in the freedom of its people -- freedom from big government, excessive regulations and high taxes. He has proven himself to be a successful leader ready to face difficult challenges -- not because it was politically expedient but because it was the right thing to do.
He will use the decision making skills he has developed while working with boards of directors, his cabinet and the Massachusetts State Legislature to bring about real change in Washington, the type of change we desperately need if we are to get past our differences and become an even stronger nation.
These are just a few of the qualities which define Romney and his leadership. At this moment in our history, we confront a new generation of challenges that demand strong, new leadership in our nation's capital. We need a president who believes in the inherent strength of the American people and who will inspire us to meet the challenges of this new century. Gov. Romney is that person.
Mitt Romney believes our best days are ahead of us and that together, we can renew the American dream. That is why I am proud to be supporting him as he begins his campaign for our nation's highest office.
The cynicism in the press towards Romney is very strange. It sticks out like a sore thumb. And not just from the liberal press. Jealosy? Romney isn't quitting and it will be interesting to see America's reaction to this golden boy once the press fails to keep him from us. The hostility is a very interesting mystery to me though.
Ron Paul understands political movements take time. And whether or not he wins the presidential election, he can already take credit for single-handedly bringing back to life the Goldwater-like wing of the Republican Party that the Bush family, among others, has tried its hardest to stamp out. Doesn't matter if he ends up going the independent route later in this election cycle, he's already set the gears in motion.
The Goldwater wing of the Republican Party certainly had its Libertarian elements, and those elements have coalesced around Ron Paul, since he has run as a Republican. In fact, Goldwater seemingly lacked a certain understanding of free markets and was far too trusting of the nation’s military industrial complex. Ron Paul is like Goldwater on steroids – in a good way, that is, and without Goldwater's hawkish perspective. He is easily the most economically literate candidate to run in the last century or so. A case can be made that he is the most literate candidate, economically and otherwise, since Thomas Jefferson.
Basically, Ron Paul’s position on government can be summed up simply as “The best government is that which governs least,” and “the U.S. government should be constrained by the enumerated letters of the constitution.” Low taxes, gold and silver money, little or no overseas military ventures and a general cessation of empire building at home and abroad are tenets on which he runs.
The man clearly understands history and his place in it. But it is not his place alone. The Ron Paul Revolution belongs to everyone who believes that human action trumps government action and that the creativity of the human spirit unfettered by bureaucratic chains is our best hope, first, last and always. -Mitch Curby
