Politics Pauses...

Politics is pausing.

First, Sen. John McCain's communication director, Brian Jones, informs us that McCain's schedule for tomorrow has been canceled. We also received this statement from Giuliani campaign communications director Katie Levinson:

"Our nation mourns for those who were killed, prays for those who survived and stands shoulder to shoulder with the families, friends and loved ones of all touched by this horrific tragedy. “Tomorrow is a day for prayer, reflection and unity. It is a time for our great country to come together. Mayor Giuliani has cancelled all political events tomorrow."

Now -- here's what Ex-Sen. John Edwards and Elizabeth Edwards sent to their campaign e-mail list tonight:

We are simply heartbroken by the deaths and injuries suffered at Virginia Tech. We know what an unspeakable, life-changing moment this is for these families and how, in this moment, it is hard to feel anything but overwhelming grief, much less the love and support around you. But the love and support is there. We pray that these families, these students, and the entire Virginia Tech community know that they are being embraced by a nation. There is a Methodist hymn that gave us solace in such a moment as this, and we repeat its final verse here, in hopes it will help these families, as it helped us:

In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity;
In our doubt there is believing, in our life, eternity,
In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory,
Unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.

Our dearest wish is that this day could start again, with the promise of these young people alive. Knowing that cannot be, our prayer is for God’s grace and whatever measure of peace can be reached on this terrible day.

Do you think the Edwards were campaigning for votes with that one?

John actually has a hair appointment with my stylist! He is getting some new color!

Politics, like the economy, never pauses. That's because of the money.

Death has no mercy for any of us....

And the tragedy at Virginia Tech., is no smaller consequence than the 50 to 150 people killed in Iraq daily.

People are people.

Where is our sanity - individually and collectivly?

How many children - whether babies in Iraq and Afganistan or American Youth in Virginia - or the many many thousands in Hiroshima in 1945?

When do we simple choose to stop the violence?

edwards try again,

oh, invoke religion...a caring and compassionate god would let this happen? wake up america...god is a dead concept.

Barack Obama in Milwaukee this evening did not do his stump speech and whip up the crowd. Instead he gave a talk about society and violence to the 4,000 who attended.

Good. Anything to get them to stop talking about things that they have no real knowledge of, and no real plan to fix anything that matters to the middle of the country. Yada Yada Yada. Blah. Blah. Blah.
Just stop talking and start doing. That would tell us a lot more about you then words.

Another example why Edwards should be seen as a top tier candidate

Well said, Mr. Edwards.

The families, friends and nation needs to have something to hold on to. An outpouring of our love and caring along with the prayers and our faith are an anchor the hurt can hold on to.

The nay-sayers offer nothing. Keep the faith.

For those who blame God or say he would let this happen should remember, We kicked him out of our schools, so what do you expect. Blame us, not God PEOPLE

It is a shame. Every day our lives and our children's lives are bludgeoned by violence in the media. Calling it "entertainment" they teach our children to disrespect authority and themselves. Virginia Tech is no surprise. It is a symptom of a society that tolerates the worst, encourages the violence and blames the parents for not teaching children how to be moral. Unless we do something as a society, parenting will become impossible and our own failure in combination with terrorists who use our immorality to justify killing us will destroy us.

More bloviating from Empty-Suit Edwards, who loves the sound of his voice as much as the coif of his hair but never has anything of substance to say. I wonder if Dems like Edwards will politically exploit this tragedy like they did when they turned the funeral for Senator Wellstone into a campaign rally.

The proper statement from any candidate with a shred of decency at a time like this is as follows: "Like all Americans, our hearts go out to the victims and their families. This is not a political moment, and therefore, I will refrain from any further comment or campaign activities and join the nation in mourning this tragic loss of valuable and innocent lives."

But then, a candidate who continues a political campaign while his wife is dying of cancer obviously has no decency whatsoever.

Some of the comment writers here who are writing negatively about Edwards are shameless. Do you have any morals, values? Did your parents teach you to make fun of a tragedy? For a minute think that your own kids or a brother or a sister was one of those 33 victims and see how do you feel about it. You all should be ashamed of yourself.

am i wrong, or didn't Bushie say God told him to invade Iraq? and doesnt he turn every death of an american soldier into politicking?
im not saying Edwards should've invoked God's name, but atleast he had a real prayer. Bush probably couldnt say Grace without effing it up.
and Guiliani has already burned his own name in effigy for his awful job as NYC mayor.
hopefully this event will get more candidates talking about what theyre gonna do about america, and less about how we're gonna "win" in iraq, which impossible.

odyssey71, God is a much bigger concept than some Santa Claus in the sky who protects us. Yes, your simple minded view of God IS dead and always has been. Open your mind and maybe you will discover the REAL God...whose vastness is beyond human comprehension.

Publius,

I know I shouldn't respond to you, given your lack of civility. But I think its important to point out that Edwards has been the most substantive candidate so far.

You can say that "he never has anything of substance to say" and all that tells me is you really have paid no attention to the Democratic race this year.

Well said, Cleo & Ron!

"I can’t help but wonder, are we now seeing the fruit of education that predominantly, throughout our country, has stopped performing any teaching on the basis of moral principles on what is right or what is wrong?" President Ronald Reagan

Bravo to Edwards. I think that the comfort of faith is niether empty nor political at this difficult time. I am not a Edwards fan or even a Democrat, but I found his message to be the most heartfelt, moving and genuine.

How about the posters here lay off the politics for just a minute and look at the value of his words rather than the messenger.

In response to the statement that "Politics Pauses", it will be seen that this horrible incident will be used by all the unbalanced liberals and conservatives. One side will say that we need more gun control and the other side will say that terrorism is here on our soil so we need more war. No matter how much we "evolve" violence has again scarred our nation and the true heart of man is revealed in us all. These things are not the will of our loving God, but done by an individual who rejected His laws, our form of government and refused to respect others. May God bless America, comfort those who mourn and my sincere sympathy goes out to those who's loved ones were killed. What a sad day for the world...

If God was a dead concept, the first thing that the grief and terror stricken survivors did wouldn't have been to start praying which is what they did, individually and collectively. Funny how we start forgetting God in our daily lives and remove Him from our schools, but in the end, we turn to him for solace and reassurance.
God, please continue to bless our nation and our citizens no matter how undeserving we often our.
And please remind people like John Edwards that if he's going to give props to you when convenient he should also remember Your word when deliberating on things like abortion.
Amen

Mr. Edwards,
you are part of the problem... When you advocate your unchristian stance that killing an unborn human is ok then you too have joined those in the culture of death

Situations like what happened at Virginia Tech tend to put matters, especially elections, into proper perspective.

We at 2008 Central actively discuss the 08 election and yet really couldn't bring ourselves to cover it yesterday. It just didn't seem appropriate.

I guess now we'll have to watch and see if/how the campaigns turn this event into something political beneficial for their campaigns.

Has empty suite flipflopper, Romney, already changed his position on gun rights after these shootings?

John Edwards is a disgrace to his home state. A complete disgrace.

how does he "know" what its like?

It's a wonder they aren't all flocking to VT for the convocation today....just like the media...they're all cockroaches that all deserve each other.

Maybe everyone here should take a lesson (myself included) from these candidates and just let the bitterness and political nonsense stop for at least a day.

I think we all need to remember that the Edward's know the loss of a child and their words can bring some comfort to the dispair that the families of these victims are feeling. They are Human.

Reading some of these remarks, I am torn between thanking God there is freedom of speech in America and mourning some people's abuse of it.

It wasn't God who let this happen. If you'd read your scriptures, you would know that God gave us FREE AGENCY. To choose RIGHT from WRONG.

Carl, if "killing an unborn child" is unchristian, then what about starting (or supporting the man who started) an unprovoked war in which tens or hundreds of innocent people have died? You think Jesus, the "Prince of Peace", would be okay with that?

What would you propose that a "caring and compassionate" God do in a situation like this odyssey71? He gave us free will. Would you really be happier if we didn't have free will and God kept us from ever doing anything He didn't approve of? God didn't do this, a disturbed young man did.

It is a very Sad Day, lets put politics & religion aside for now for the sake of the young lives lost & the families that are left behind.

I recommend a book for all Rational Thinking People, it's called the End of Faith, by Sam Harris.

This atrocity was done by a human who was psychotic & thats it!

to the idiots running for president. its only april of 2007 and the election is not for another year. DISAPPEAR FROM THE MEDIA FOR ABOUT 4-6 MONTHS. im already tired of hearing ang seeing a select few on tv (clinton, obama, mccain, romney, guiliani) and others not getting any press.
I guess the next election for 2012 starts the day after the november 08 elections are over????

When I went to college, my roommate and I took our rifles and went squirrel hunting before chemistry lab in the morning. Then we would go to lab, stand the rifles in the back with our game bags, and proceed with our class assignments. Dr. Rainwater would make his way around to all the students and when he came to us he would say under his breath,"If you got any, bring them by the house tonight and we'll cook them up." We often had dinner with him and his family because they lived on campus near our dorm.

NOBODY thought a thing about those rifles standing in the back of the lab because in those days EVERY household had them standing behind the front door. EVERYBODY knew about them and NOBODY was a nut case who wanted to kill their classmates or teachers. Availability of and access to firearms was VERY COMMON and far more so than today.

Yet we didn't have these school shootings. What has changed about the guns? I submit that NOTHING about them has changed, but a LOT in our society has changed. People in my day were required to take responsibility for what they did and didn't do. We don't hold anyone personally responsible anymore because if we did, we wouldn't be blaming guns, the university president, or the university police. We would hold the guy who did this responsible because he is responsible.

Life is just that simple and just that complex. I still have that squirrel rifle I used 45 years ago when I was in college. It has not slipped out in the middle of the night and robbed any liquor stores or gone to school and shot anyone even though I have not had it locked up. Maybe that is because it can not do anything on its own. It is an inaminate object just like a hammer. I am responsible for its actions.

The guy who shot those people at Virginia Tech is responsible, so quit blaming anything and anyone but him. He did it. He knew what he was doing and he planned it in advance. He is the problem, or at least, he was. In this case, the problem is solved because I promise you, he won't do it again.

It is with great sorrow that I am commenting on the state of affairs. In a country like United States where there are supposed to be stringent laws to protect innocent individuals, such a tragic incident has taken place. We should really be ashamed .

Tighter gun control measures should be adopted . Student visas should be issued after the applicants undergo a Psychometric/Behavorial test
along with fulfilling other requirements

Black Prince , you are right !!

Sometimes we have to stop HORRIBLE people with HORRIBLE intentions. Or many generations would suffer, or fall away in unbelief. We are people who needed to come to Earth, to gain a body and fulfill their purpuses and plans, good things.
So if God tells us to protect ourselves...our children...our nation. So we can progress. Wouldn't you? Even if He didn't whisper it in your ear. But He gave you a feeling to recognize! He did put in each of us the knowing of right or wrong. Or to feel something burn in our heart. A swelling feeling, that we knows is right or that we have to do...or act upon something.
How blind, to not feel something as you read this right now!!
Our Heavenly Father does love us, and for those who cause hurt to others...there will be no reward for their actions. Only spiritual hell, darkness. Not even feeling the chance of God's love or light towards you. Those being brought it upon themselves! That is why now as we are here on Earth, we need to find the truth for ourselves. So we don't put ourselves in that perdicament in the next life! I know that GOD lives, HE LOVE US!
"If any of ye lack wisdom, let him ask of God." Now do as James directs.

Black Prince, YOU ARE CORRECT. I SAY KUDOS! If more students had the chance to carry a gun on that campus...that are sane. They would've been able to stop this guy from killing 30-sum people! If the professors believed in carrying a gun, they could've stopped him too. That is just the world we are living in. I think some of those video games don't help either! A "contempt society." Freedom? Go look up in the dictionary what those words mean! And it is so great (I am kidding) that we have all of these top celebrities, preforming in such grousome horror films. That is the "next best thing" to be in in Hollywood. Not good for us normal people who want to live content lives. You have all that hype corrupting minds of old and young. Giving ideas.

Justin- There is no civil way to describe a man who puts his political ambitions ahead of the welfare of his family. Such a person, by definition, is unworthy of holding any office of public trust. Edwards' perverse priorities reflect a mindset that is simply unfathomable to me as a husband and father.

With regard to the question of substance, he simply has none. His every policy position is just a rehashing of the failed policies of the Great Society. I challenge you to state even one fresh new innovative idea that Edwards has ever articulated. Edwards looks pretty and exudes charm, but in the words of the Bard, his speeches are all sound and fury signifying nothing.
