Romney Raises $23M -- Tops GOP Field
Ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney raised $23M this quarter, more than enough to top the field of Republican contenders.
That Romney was able to squeeze so many low hanging fruit sources in what has inarguably been a rough political quarter for him speaks highly of the relationships he’s cultivated over these years. It's also a testament to his fundraising team, led by Spencer Zwick, and the campaign's technologically advanced ComMitt activism platform. All Romney's money was raised into his primary campaign accounts.
Romney's burn rate -- tbd.
We await Sen. John McCain to report in. That might happen tomorrow.
His advisers are steeling themselves for a sobering number. Our educated estimate is that, of the top tier Republicans, McCain will raise the third most amount of money and have the third most on hand.

9 million on hand?
10?
How much of that 23 is primary money?
I bet McCain raises second highest and has lowest COH.
Mitt Romney..
$25 for that designer haircut
$50 for the hair gel to keep that hair neat
$100 for picture perfect family portrait
$23 millions for changing the image
Realizing all that money can't erase millions of FLIP-FLOPS.. Priceless
There are somethings that money can't change!
Does any one know how much of Hillary's $26 million is to be locked up in a general election fund? If a candidate doesn't win the party's nomination, those who donate to the candidate’s general election fund get their money back, making contributions to a general election fund less risky than contributions to a primary election fund. Thus, those who contribute to a candidate's primary election fund must have more conviction since they're taking on more risk (they don't get their money back if their candidate doesn't get nominated). All of Romney’s first-quarter fundraising was for the primary election. Hillary's camp isn't disclosing how much of her $26 million was raised for the general election, hoping the mainstream media will gloss over this important detail (they probably will, given their liberal leanings). Although the breakdown in her 1Q fundraising will ultimately have to be disclosed on April 15, the media attention will have faded by then.
All the money Mitt has raised is for the primaries he has chosen not to accept general election funds yet.
The article answers your first question Anon...ALL of the money was raised for Romney's Primary bid.
As for the flip flops, I have watched Mitt for some years now. He has always been personally against abortion and has been Pro-life public policy wise as long as he has held public office (remember he lost to Ted Kennedy in '94 when he made pro-choice/policy statements).
Also, I judge a policy maker by his or her actual votes/decisions, not past statements. Just because Romney has spoken respectfully of Gays as human beings but adamantly fought Gay marriage as a policy maker does not make him a flip flopper. Romney has moved past the bile of polarization but has experiance and core American Values that Obama does not. He is also the only candidate that really supports economic growth and tax cuts in word and deed.
In 2008 the GOP is going to be the underdog and I agree with George Will that the top three Republicans are all good candidates for beating the Dems. That said, I think Romney reminds me most of Reagan.
Why is it that the headline is not "Romney Raises $20 Million"? You include in the total the $2 million+ loaned and the money transfered from his 1994 Senate account. The $23M total is not a true gauge of his support--you should quote the $20 million. . . At the very least, please, when comparing the candidates, use consistent methodology for totaling fundraising amounts!
To Anon2 who thinks of Mitt as second coming of Reagan (btw, a very good joke):
The LA Times had a detailed story last week on how phony and deceiving Romney is. They give examples of how Romney mislead and tricked environmentalists, gay rights groups, pro-choice groups by saying he believes in their causes as recently as in 2002. Romney is no conservative in any way, here are are some glaring example from LA Times article http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-romney25mar25,0,1242142,full.story?coll=la-home-headlines
- Romney had told NARAL that he would steadfastly support abortion rights. When asked about whether he will change his position Romney had said, "I want to be really careful about not changing my position," and "I will do what I say I'll do."
- Romney also argued that his judicial picks would be more likely to protect abortion rights than would those of a Democratic governor
- When Romney huddled with dozens of gay activists for an endorsement meeting in 2002, at the restaurant attached to the gay bar, some of his appeals were similar to those he had made on abortion.
- Romney promised the Log Cabin Republicans he would push against social conservatives on such issues as domestic partnerships for gays.
- Patrick Guerriero, a prominent Log Cabin member, told the Bay Windows newspaper immediately after the meeting that Romney showed he was in agreement with the gay community on every major issue. "If you go down his list, it's pretty much a check-off of the real hot-button concerns for gays and lesbians," Guerriero said. "I do believe that, and as you know I'm a supporter of gay marriage."
- Romney was such an environmentalist that this is what he said about coal-fired power plant as a governor in 2003.. "I will not create jobs or hold jobs that kill people," Romney said in a heated exchange. "And that plant — that plant kills people."
- Romney also met with religious leaders to discuss his forthcoming plan to combat climate change, a 50-page document that Romney himself had edited, making line-by-line changes.
- Romney told the group he was "terrified" about global warming, a phenomenon he described as "quite alarming".
But Romney changed his positions beginning 2005 when he started thinking about presidential race.
Romney does not have any convictions. He is willing to say whatever it takes to get elected whether that means smooching with left or right.
Romney is no conservative and is the most dangerous candidate for republicans who truly believe in conservative values.
"Romney is no conservative and is the most dangerous candidate for republicans who truly believe in conservative values."
So when did conservative values become the equivalent of anti-gay, anti-environment, anti-women? The conservative friendly party was hijacked not by conservatives, but by fundamentalists who care more about what is done in the bedroom than who is killed in war, poverty, or the environment.
The idea that one can't believe in global warming (like 100% of the scientific community) and at the same time be conservative is an idea only proposed by the dumbest of people.
Let me describe the 2 types of faux conservatives that exist today:
"O no!!!! My Exxon stock will go down if the government takes steps to reduce global warming." -The modern day fiscal conservative.
"O no!!!! two women are going at it in the privacy of their own home. Our tradional values are under attack!"
-The modern day social conservative.
Too bad neither of these faux conservatives care about real pressing issues of the day.
So called conservatives like Anon think conservatism is a scientific theory giving us all the answers to questions like, "does global warming exist?" "do humans increase the rate of gloibal warming?" "Are people born gay?" "should kids be taught safe sex?"
I know what a cold blooded idiot would say to all these questions, "NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!"
Here is a wakeup call to the moon bats: Conservatism is not a scientific theory headed by great minds such as James Dobson. James Dobson is an idiot just like most self-described conservatives.
Anon, Why are you such a hater?
I would be more careful than trusting the liberal media these days, second I would look at the record of Mitt Romney rather than what he has said, third he has apologized for being pro-choice and has had pro-life conversion such as Reagan, Thompson, and many other GOP'ers.
Mitt is an effective leader, please look up his blogs for the version of the truth according to his side. www.evangelicalsformitt.org
The junior republican senator from Tennessee has an amazingly similar resume when it comes to flip flopping. Bob Corker had three positions on abortion twice against it and once for it, across twenty years. Although Corker was able to overcome his label as a phony social conservative, Romney will ultimately fail in his bid.
Romney is the most talented politician I've ever seen. Assuming people can get past his religion, and they can, he will resurect the GOP. The GOP needs a slick politician like him. I think he could carry as many states as Reagan did.
