Reiner Raises Big Bucks for Clinton
Hillary Clinton raised an estimated $500,000 at director Rob Reiner's Brentwood home Sunday night, according to her campaign.
"We're all here for one reason," Reiner told a crowd the campaign estimated at around 250 people. "To put the best person in the White House."
Guest donated $2,300 to attend. Chicken and pasta were served.
Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Former California Gov. Gray Davis, Norman Lear, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Lloyd, and Mary Steenburgen were among the guests who arrived to meet and dine with the New York Senator behind a twenty-five-foot hedge in the tony neighborhood on the west side of the city.
Attendees began arriving around 6pm, while neighbors walked their dogs and pushed strollers.
Clinton took the microphone close to 9 pm and spoke for about half an hour. She thanked her hosts and others who helped organize the event. She said she knew that several people were unable to come because of the massive fires burning in areas like Malibu.
Clinton went on to talk about her goals for America, touching on all the issues she addresses in her usual stump speech, from creating new jobs and providing quality affordable health care to the importance of clean energy.
"We are a good and great country,” Clinton said, adding that with their help, America could prove that to the rest of the world.
After her speech Reiner was back to sing “Happy Birthday” to the former first lady, who turns 60 this week. Reiner made a reference to Marilyn Monroe serenading John F. Kennedy and sang a few lines, including “Happy Birthday, Mrs. President,” before leading the rest of the crowd in a brief rendition.
The event was not without protests. A 911 conspiracy theorist stood outside early on holding a sign saying Clinton knew "what really happened” on that fateful day, but he left before the senator showed up.
Three women from the anti-war group Code Pink came and unfurled a fuchsia banner demanding that Clinton "Lead us out of Iraq.” [ATHENA JONES]
