Concord Monitor: Romney Is A Phony

Newspaper endorsements are lovely, oft fleeting, validations of a candidate and his or her campaign. Ultimately, though, they provide a nice pull quote for television ads in the waning days of a campaign.

It's rare, however, to see the blistering anti-endorsement, the 'wait-a-minute, don't you even think of voting for this guy or gal' missive. The Concord Monitor published just such a piece today about Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who owns a vacation home in the Granite State.

The Monitor hasn't endorsed yet in the Democratic or Republican race. And you'd think it would have been enough for the paper to simply back a Romney rival. But no, this time the Monitor's team apparently thought a stronger statement should be made. The paper briefly charted Romney's flips and flops on gay marriage and abortion, his inability to classify waterboarding as torture and more. And then this kicker:

When New Hampshire partisans are asked to defend the state's first-in-the-nation primary, we talk about our ability to see the candidates up close, ask tough questions and see through the baloney. If a candidate is a phony, we assure ourselves and the rest of the world, we'll know it.

Mitt Romney is such a candidate. New Hampshire Republicans and independents must vote no.

This anti-endorsment is beyond rediculous! The editors can tell people who they would support and why, but to help smear certain candidates is blatantly unethical and beneath the dignity of a real newspaper.

Ahh - more proof of the flip flopper Romney

Maybe this liberal editorial board has ties to the Clinton Campaign. Hillary knows Mitt Romney could be her most formidable challenge.

Not much of a surprise to hear about this anti-endorsement. I have been "frightened" of Romney since one of the very first Republican debates when he was asked what he would change about America. He immediately responded (in his flag-waving, patriotic manner) "nothing"! After I recovered from the shock I experienced after hearing this, I realized that to have this man elected as president would be dangerous since he is so oblivious and out of touch to the plight and suffering of MILLIONS of Americans who are homeless, or having to choose between food and medications each month, or are just getting by. Romney is worth HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS - is this guy thinking of the middle class and the poor? Doesn't seem so.

The Concord Monitor got it right. Romney's campaign illustrates everything bad about politics. Let's hold our candidates up to a higher standard.

"Anti endoresment 'beyond ridiculous' (missspelled, by the way)?? "Smear" candidates? Hardly. The Monitor is saying like they see it: phony is phony. Romney is ambitious and will say anything to get the nod. What would a spineless self absorbed man like that be as a president? I shudder to think of it...

The fact that icons of New Hampshire's representatives of the Mainstream Media (i.e. Union Leader and Concord Monitor) don't like Mitt is even more reason for real Conservatives to like him.

Who would I rather have as my nominee? A guy who has been endorsed by the Union Leader and Boston Globe (McCain)? A guy who has been endorsed by the NH Teacher's Union (Huckabee)? Or a guy who has been endorsed by the National Review (Romney)?

I'll take the National Review endorsement over any of the others those guys have been getting.

The Concord Monitor is being hypocritical. John Edwards is the biggest phony in this race and maybe in the whole country. So if you are going to attack somebody for being a phony, go after John Edward first. My name is NOT John Edwards and I approved this message.

One man sad :" phony " -and I have to believe ?

By my eyes , only Romney can be a good president.

no, tati, romney would be a terrible president. he said 'religion requires freedom as freedom requires religion'. the original wording of the first amendment was '"The civil rights of none shall be abridged on account of religious belief or worship, nor shall any national religion be established, nor shall the full and equal rights of conscience be in any manner, or on any pretence, infringed.'' - James Madison (Original wording of the First Amendment; Annals of Congress 434 (June 8, 1789).)'

ANY "liberal newspaper" that "bad mouth's" a candidate running for president gives me enough "proof" that THIS is a "good candidate. I shall be voting for Mitt Romney. Thank you "Concord whatever" for running your "piece". Its all I needed to read.... ROMNEY for PRESIDENT. Go Mitt, go....

"...The Concord Monitor editorial page is considered to be liberal..."

No Kidding? Does that have to automatically mean they are shameless hacks? Apparently so...

I appreciate newspapers for the fact that they are a good source for information on current events especially during elections of any sort however I believe that they are supposed to be impartial and should always stay that way unfortunately this paper has taken it upon itself to state the opinion of those who run it yes they are entitled to opinion but the news must always remain impartial if we are expected to believe the source.

Personally, I would rather have a so called "flip-flopper" than another ideologue. Romney is able to listen to an issue, and if new information is given to him, come to a different conclusion. Look at Romney's qualifications: he's able to work with both sides to come to an excellent conclusion! In comparison, Bush (who is the exact opposite of a flip-flopper) will not change his mind about the war despite much new evidence and public opinion change. Flip-flopping is often seen as a bad quality, but it doesn't show anything but an open and intelligent mind.

Of course the liberal Concord Monitor doesn't like Mitt Romney - - he is the major threat tot he Democrats. He's been the major target of DNC press releases (99) during the past nine months - and Mike Huckabee had none. So this is predictable.

What's outrageous is the MSM's piling on the MLK / George Romney story as false. Here's the truth from the Detroit Free Press:

Detroit Free Press: “With Gov. Romney a surprise arrival and marching in the front row, more than 500 Negroes and whites staged a peaceful anti-discrimination parade up Grosse Pointe’s Kercheval Avenue Saturday. … ‘the elimination of human inequalities and injustices is our urgent and critical domestic problem,’ the governor said. … [Detroit NAACP President Edward M.] Turner told reporters, ‘I think it is very significant that Governor Romney is here. We are very surprised.’ Romney said, ‘If they want me to lead the parade, I’ll be glad to.’” (”Romney Joins Protest March Of 500 In Grosse Pointe,” Detroit Free Press, 6/29/63)

When will we see retractions from the MSM? Probably never.

Being from Massachusetts I was originally a Romney supporter. However the Monitor Editorial nails it on why I no longer support Multiple-Choice Mitt.

I, personally, am running scared as a cat on a hot tin roof. Romney, whose wife has MS, is against stem cell research???? The last thing we need is a Christian zealot making important decisions. Yes, I agree,...he's the most "presidential-looking candidate" If looks were the criteria, he would win hands down. BUT,. it's not! What can a candidate bring to the American people that will improve our lives?
I am a Democrat but I would most assurededly vote for a candidate from any party who is honest, intelligent and experienced enough to run the affairs of our extremely complex gov't.
Hey, Mayor Bloomberg-ARE YOU LISTENING?

Romney learned at his fathers liberal knee tell them what they want to hear to get elected. He leaned liberal in his run for governor. Ultra conservative when vying for the nomination. If he gets it look for a quick swing to the middle for he knows ultra conservative won't win national elections.

Ditto the thoughts about that total phoney John Edwards!!

oft fleeting ... enough said ...

This article has been taken out of context. In the print edition of the paper (if you actually subscribe), it was on the "OPINION" page, with a big bold "OPINION" directly over it and right next to the "Letters to the editor" which are often anti-candidate rants. People need to take these articles with a grain of salt.

The only strange thing about this is the by line; it says "Monitor staff" rather than "For the Monitor".

To be honest, Romney is a phony.
