this country is a country of people from all countires. If my ancestors had been made to speak their language and not learn english, would our national language be German. English is our language and everyone should learn it no matter where you come from.
Everyone knows the key to creating a national bond of its people is their ability to communicate with each other. Obama wants to break our English base. First to Spainish then to Islam. Hey Obama, here's an idea, we have 50 states, so assign each state a different language and everyone can move to where they like that language, and everyone is happy.

It is insane to even think we as Americans should learn Spanish. What about French or German. Who cares if weborder a spanish speaking country. We are Americans and we speak English.What is this country coming to? People should speak only English in America. They can speak what they want at home. We live between a Spanish speaking country to our South and a partial French speaking country to our North. Why learn Spanish over French? If we really wanted our children to have a jump start in the current business world, wouldn't it be a better idea to promote learning Chineese? I think he is trying to appeal to Hispanic voters to win their vote. Language can be a unifying force or a divisive force. I feel that his comment is anti-American and a divisive statement.

I've never been good at even speaking the English (American not Queen's English) language let alone try to learn another language of any kind. I do believe that English should now and always be the "National" language; however I also believe that we should learn to speak other languages to better understand the people we live with on a day to day basis. It's just common sense. By the way for all those that think we speak English because "We" were here first, maybe you should take American history 101. I think you'll find we should all be speaking American Indian, then Spanish, then French, then Deutsch then I guess the English who basically got their butts handed to them by the French (remember that nice little statue in NYC?) If you wish to be closed minded, that's fine stay where you are just don't get in the way of people willing to learn and grow. If you want to speak English…move to ENGLAND.

Of course, being able to communicate in another language is a plus. Our children will live in an increasingly global economy. Having a second language whether it be Spanish, French, German, Russian or Chinese will make them more able to compete.
We have become so civilized and advanced that we now have words in our vocabulary that people actually want to make forbiden to speak. We will soon have to learn another language everyone is taking offence to ours mostly us.

Why is it so difficult to understand that speaking two languages is an advantage not a disadvantage? We live in a globalized world, not on an american island. English is the main language in the USA..of course... but it´s not the only language in the world.
Let our children have the opportunity to be a part of the world. Don´t take their chance to be useful in a multicultural world. Their chances will grow if they speak more than just one language.
