It's likeability that confers immunity to swiftboating, not truth or repetition. Kerry got smeared because a portion of the electorate was looking for an excuse to dislike Kerry, and the falsely-named swift boat veterans provided one.

Obama won't suffer the same fate because a majority of the electorate ISN'T looking for an excuse to dislike him. They like him, and don't want to change their minds.

I know that based on the Bill we have seen recently it might be difficult to imagine him counseling AGAINST confrontation. However, in the past I have seen him play it both ways. In a face to face challenge he will typically meet the charge head-on and attempt to intimidate the accuser. If he is not present when a charge is made and has time for reflection, he is capable of a more nuanced response. He is normally quite deft at human interaction but like a lot of other people during the course of this primary season, he has occasionally allowed himself to become slightly overwrought.

As an Obama supporter, I would like to lower the expectations for him. I posit that he will be subjected to withering attacks. His campaign, I am told, will have responses ready to air, within minutes of seeing an attack. The Republicans will be allowed one or two vicious attacks, after which the public will likely tune them out. Of course the GOP's own attack dogs (Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity, Coulter, etc.) will have a field day, but normal people are too busy figuring out how not to have their homes foreclosed to pay much attention. This election will in fact sink the GOP for a long time to come, as the party of malice and personal attacks. It will turn off informed young voters from ever voting for a Republican. Arrogance is a terrible vice. Remember, when the US marched into Iraq with unspeakable arrogance..who would have thunk we would be reduced to the current state after committing a few trillion dollars to essentially remove Saddam..a similar fate awaits the GOP. As much as 30% of Obama's primary, and caucus votes are Republicans trying to choose the weakest democratic candidate for McCain to run against. I go back and forth.

On the one hand, I am so terrified of what will happen in the general election. I can already SEE some of it on conservative blogs and youtube comments and talk radio. They will basically try to say that Obama is some kind of radical black nationalist. And they will be relentless with it. But then, I think...will anyone believe that stuff? Obama is like Mr. Rogers...it's hard to imagine him being militant about anything. Also, I feel like his campaign has been really brilliant so far, and surely they've learned from watching Kerry that they have to respond forcefully. But beyond that, I am idealistic enough to think that people will have learned their lesson and be unwilling to listen to Republicans anymore. So, I tend to think he will win. But it's going to be really ugly and sad and they will probably run ads with Wright in them every day until November. We'll see, I guess.

I'll be 57 this month. When I was young, we lived in an area of New Jersey where there weren't many black children, but they DID attend our schools.

On weekends, we spent time in Northern Maryland where I became friends with a local girl slightly younger than I. I accompanied her and her father to buy corn on a farm one day and as we were driving through the rural countryside I saw a small brick school. I asked if that was her school. She responded with outrage, "That's the DARKIE school!!" I was shocked. I'd never come face to face with racism before. It was an eye opener for an eight year old...

A few years later, my family moved to Florida where the schools were still segregated. During my sophomore year, black kids began attending all white schools, and being from "up north", being an outcast already, I had nothing to lose and I sat in back of the class, next to the black kids. Having lived close to Philly, I was big time into Jive rock and roll, seriously lacking on Florida radio stations. Smokey Robinson, Little Anthony and others became the level playing field for our tentative communication. One boy even brought me new records he thought I would enjoy. I introduced him to the Beatles.

A few years later, as a 16 year old runnaway, living on the streets of San Francisco's Haight Asbury... I was hitchhiking one day up Haight Street. A low slung older car with several older black men stopped to pick me up. Being the liberal I was, I berated myself for my initial fear of getting in the car and climbed into the back seat between two of the men. As we drove up the street, the mood in the car was so dark and the conversation restarted my uneasiness with my situation but on one level I sensed something was wrong but didn't think it was hostility. It was more futility. Finally one of them asked me, "Do you know what they did? They killed Martin today."

So I learned of the death of Martin Luther King from the lips of the saddest black man I've ever seen. His/their despair was palpable. There was also a sense of inevitability about it as well. I believe that my precarious position was only made safe again by my shock and sadness at the news. I spontaneously apologized to them. Soon, they stopped the car and left me out by Golden Gate Park.

I will never forget them. I will never forget the little racist girl. and I will never forget the boy who brought me records. For all of them, I will vote for Barack Obama, give money to Barack Obama, canvas and phone bank for Barack Obama and I will pray that as a nation we can heal these wounds.

PS: since they continually refer to the Democratic Party as Democrat Party, we need to refer to the Republican Party as the Repub party. Don't do it in a snide way, just refer to republicans as Repubs in posts and formal interviews.

The Swiftboaters are coming after McCain too but possibly with more ammunition than they had for Kerry. I do not know if all the claims of treason made by Vietnam Vets Against McCain are true but my uncle who was a Navy officer on an aircraft carrier in the Vietnamese Conflict also said McCain was a traitor. VVAM have some videos on their site. I don't know what to think but i have questions I would like answers to. Why did he have all the POW records sealed including his? Should we not see his POW record? why did he do so much to obstruct info or testimony at the POW/MIA hearings? why did he scream at the family members of vets while embracing the interrogator responsible for torturing Americans? why did he angrily insist there was never any Soviet questioning of U.S. POWs in Vietnam when other POWs, the Vietnamese and former KGB all say there was? Why did he not get his promotions for his time in captivity although other POWs did? I am concerned about the possibility that as president he could be blackmailed by Vietnam or Russia.

I didn't get past the first accusation in that long post about "Obama lies" - -Guess what he did not lie --U of Chicago Law School issued a statement saying yes Obama really WAS a law professor there, one of the most prestigious law schools in the country. He held the title "Senior Lecturer" which is for professors who have other careers, but they made it clear he was a real professor. In fact they said he was offered a tenure track full time position but did not take it.

and jacksmith How can you say Obama has no experience and Hillary has 35 years? That makes no sense. You're counting Hillary's experience starting from when she left law school so by that measure Obama has 20 years and all that time in some kind of public or community service. As 1st in his class at Harvard Law and editor of the Harvard Law Review he could have had a corporate job with a huge salary but he chose helping regular people over making money. I do respect Hillary's early work for CDF but in 35 years of experience you're counting years of private practice for Rose Law Firm etc. including some not so above board deals.
Plus he has more years in public office than Hillary.

i was and am asupporer of john kerry. iwas a part of the swift boat operation in se asia in 1968 and 1969. if the mission of the swift boats was examined in the wordl court, it likely would have been judgeed a series of war crimes. the swift boats were indescriminately firing on unarmed villages, kiling woman and children. in his original senate testimony he did not make this specific charge/ ithink he should at least asked for a congressional investigation . several of the swift boat perps were major backers of criminal actions. l keep hoping mr. kerry will be more forthcoming in he future. the planning for this operation took place at the highest levels and it may hae been a component of operation phoenix. check wikipedia for details of phoenix. john bulette md

Kerry lost because he was as engaging as dirt. Swiftboating is nothing like asking legit questions about Obama's poor judgment or worse on two pastors and his vacuousness or plagarism on everything else. This primary has been very polite. Just wait until party unity doesn't trump the necessary critical eye on who Obama is and isn't. As for any substantive comparison of Kerry and Obama, they are apples and oranges. So, what to make of a Kerry endorsement? Nothing.

Why do people keep trying to make political hay out of this Reverend Wright thing? Nobody said squat about Reagan/Falwell or "W" Bush, and now McCain playing up to Bob Jones university-why? Because that brand of hatred is all but governmentally sanctioned, that's why. Wright had some points, for God's sake.
