"Why Can't I Just Eat My Waffle?"

SCRANTON, Pa. -- Chomping down on sausage and waffles at Glider's Diner today with Sen. Bob Casey at his side, Barack Obama declined, in a sense, to comment on Jimmy Carter's meeting with Hamas.

Asked if he had heard that Carter reported a positive outcome from the meeting, Obama looked at the reporter who questioned him and said, "Why can't I just eat my waffle?"

Asked again by the reporter, Obama bit. Not at the question but into a butter-covered bite of Glider's specialty over-size Belgian waffles. With a wink this time he said, "Just let me eat my waffle."

Obama has criticized Carter previously for meeting with a terrorist organization, but the IL Sen. has also been attacked by John McCain for not condemning Carter's visit more sternly.

At a meeting with Jewish leaders in Philadelphia last week, Obama told the audience that he believes it is appropriate to meet with Syria and Iran, despite their hostility towards Israel. He said Hamas, however, does not deserve the same diplomatic approach.

Obama repeated those thoughts at a town hall in Reading yesterday when asked by a voter about Carter's trip.

"I think it's very hard for us to be able to broker a peace deal between the Israelis and the Palestinians if a certain portion of their actors or the people who are representing the Palestinians don't even recognize the people on the other side of the table as being able to stay there," he said.

on a day Obama was on a half dozen local radio stations doing 5 minute interviews, tapes an interview for WWE and Daily Show, and will do sit downs with all three Network Morning shows, some B/S report about an intrusive reporter interrupting Obama's breakfast is laughably bad journalism.

". . . some B/S report about an intrusive reporter interrupting Obama's breakfast is laughably bad journalism". Actually, I think that the "report" was neither "B/S" nor"laughably bad journalism". Nor do I think that the initial question was "intrusive." If someone wants to be able to eat his waffle without being questioned, let him eat his waffle at home and not run for the presidency of the United States. What I find disturbing was neither the question nor the report on the question, but the unwillingness of either Clinton or Obama to say what is clearly the case: If there is to be peace in the Middle East everyone with power in the region has to support the peace, and the US/Israeli position of trying to isolate and destroy Hamas is not going to help anyone except -- in the short term -- pandering US politicians. Good for President Carter. Now we need Obama to acknowledge that what Carter is doing should be praised and encouraged.

THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS!! FOR HILLARY!!!

Hector,
I agree 100%.
I do support Obama but I find it sad & discouraging that for him to openly support what Jimmy Carter just did would be political suicide. I do however remain hopeful that once elected we might see the side of Obama that openly supports diplomacy shining through a little brighter. What's ironic is the same People who make it impossible for Obama to openly support Carter, stand to gain the most from it. Peace.

Obama is correct.....his waffle, his breakfast is more important than a stupid question about a world policy question. Get used to it. This is King Obama.
Why should he be bothered. Hope and Change. Pass the Butter.

"on a day Obama was on a half dozen local radio stations doing 5 minute interviews, tapes an interview for WWE and Daily Show, and will do sit downs with all three Network Morning shows"

So he is obviously giving a lot of time to the press...is it so wrong he or hillary has an uninterrupted breakfast. I notice the press bring McCain his doughnuts and coffee....what hypocritical scum.

Boy, no kidding. The press falls all over McCain, shines his shoes, brings him his paper and donuts, and they're drawing beads on the Dems. Just how do Dems get the media to pay as much critical attention to McCain as they do to the Dem candidates?

I say, leave the man alone and let him eat his breakfast. He's already too skinny. The media is already way too intrusive.

This sort of thing happens all the time when candidates are on the road. It is not even remotely common practice to type it up and report on it. It is rather pathetic actually, and would be even for a third-rate local rag.

Absolutely silly! Obama already condemned Carter for meeting with Hamas. What do you want him to do "Double condemn" Carter?

@Hector:

He has already answered this (stupid) question in numerous, lengthy replies.

If some dimwit reporter doesn't do their homework, it's their problem.

It's often better to avoid a complex issue than take a "off the cuff" stance. The use of the waffle was clever. I'm sure he;s also capable of using other food for this strategic purpose.

His opponent's supporters and Hillary herself in the debate have already mentioned a connection to Hamas... anything he says only serves to imply he's got information beyond what Carter has communicated.

The first one to speak on this issue the day before an election is going to offend someone.

President Carter, as always, remains politically tone-deaf.

If he wants to eat in peace he should order from room service. The man is running for president and if asked, is required to answer. What else is he doing in a diner for God's sake.

"The man is running for president and if asked, is required to answer."

I didn't know that politicians, by law, are required to allow nosy reporters to interrupt their breakfast.

... and I suppose that celebrities who dare to go out into public are also now required to let the public line up for photos and autograph signings?!

Gimmeabreak!

Barack Obama gives reporters *PLENTY* of access to ask him questions, which explains why he has *ALREADY* answered this question in the past! It is not Obama's job to give some pushy, wetnosed field reporter an exclusive in the middle of his breakfast, rather than going through the proper channels... especially when Obama has a rare opportunity to sit down, read a newspaper, and actually get a decent bite to eat.

I've been in a visible public role before where I've been put on the spot to "talk shop" during my downtime... and you know what? It's damn annoying! And sometimes, rude and intrusive!

If you want to be effective and maintain both your schedule and your sanity, you *have* to establish reasonable boundries.

'Nuff said.

So if this reporter had somehow found Cheney's secret bunker and gotten past the security and then had the balls to actually ask Cheney "So, how's the surge going?" we all know that Cheney wuold respond with a healthy "Go F*** yourself."

Of course, this reporter, or any other reporter for that matter, won't interrupt Cheney or Bush or Condi. They won't even get a chance to get close enough to ask a question.

And you clowns are giving Obama a hard time for wanting 15 minutes to eat breakfast. Sheesh.

Non-story about a non-story about someone else besides the candidate.
Wow, some of you have been watching this primary race to long. Let the man cling to his elitist waffle. It should be a flapcake right?
Leggo his Eggo. And if anyone makes any racist syrup references, I think my brain might explode. You should go do some journalism about journalists talking about journalist who report on bloggers complaining about TV. The great circle of stupid.

How dare the media expect the Messiah to answer dumb questions from some upstart reporter? Who do they think he is? John McCain, who'll sit there and answer every question reporters can come up with until their well runs dry? The nerve of these media people!! Don't they know their role is to bow down and worship, and write stories of awe and praise?!?! Let the waffler eat his waffle, fer cryin' out loud!

Mr. Obama was not having breakfast. He was at an organized campaign photo-op at the local diner that is a legend in that area. The waffle, its signature item, was a campaign prop as was his action in eating it. Reporters were invited to the event. It's the reporters' job to ask questions of the candidates because the way the questions are answered is as important as the answer and Mr. Obama still fails to realize this. Reporters are not there to be passive documentarians who simply record what the candidate wants people to see.

Mr. Carter is an ex President and superdelegate who supports Mr. Obama and Mr. Carter is making news with his extracurricular diplomacy. The questions are highly relevant and Mr. Obama rather than answer, chose to hide behind a waffle.

If he wanted to have a quiet breakfast, then he should have ordered room service or not let the reporters in the building by saying beforehand "I am just going to go inside and have some breakfast, be back in 20 minutes and then I will answer a few questions." I think most reporters would have been cool with that, but it wasn' that way...it was a campaign stop.

The more Mr. Obama shows that he can't handle the heat with these types of questions, the more heat will be placed upon him. He hasn't even been asked any HARD questions yet.

If you are eating in public, running for President, (think "trying to look like a regular guy" eating with the masses..getting exposure ,,looking for votes) then expect to have people/reporters ask you questions. It was just a evasive/rude response from the King of Charm and Inexperience.

Poor Obama, he just don't get it. He must think because he is black everyone should give him a break. Well tough, he chose to run for president and then says "America is the greatest country in the nation" help me to CHANGE IT, so if he really truely thinks it "great" then what is it he wants to change? Answer questions Obama, lets see what you are made of.

As a McCain supporter, I hope he keeps campaigning this way. Then McCain is sure to win. Go Obama!

It is obvious that Obama cannot eat and talk at the same time. He needs to stay home with Michele and kids and discuss Rev. Wright, Ayers and those bitter people in the white race. Of cource thay have to do this AFTER breakfest.

"Why can't I just be president?" King Rhetoric shows his true colors

what bothers me is that eating a waffle at a waffle house is an obvious political stunt. it's called pandering. so why should he get upset if one of the camera crews in toe ask him a legitimate question. he's not a movie star, he's running for president of the United States. If he "just wants to eat his waffles" than he could have his Secret Service bring him some. instead of going to a waffle house with camera crews in toe. wake up people, there's no hope around here.
