M. Warner Against Gas Tax Holiday
Former VA Gov. Mark Warner, who launched his U.S. Senate bid today but has not endorsed in the presidential contest, came out against a summer gas tax holiday of the type that Hillary Clinton has been vigorously promoting in NC and IN, according to The Roanoke Times.
"I would be concerned about whether those dollars would be replaced," said Warner, who noted that gas tax revenues pay for transportation improvements.
He added, "I think what we need is a solution that goes after the oil speculators to try to bring down the gas price."
Warner has stayed neutral in the presidential contest, cognizant of his upcoming Senate bid. His former LG and successor, Tim Kaine, is backing Barack Obama.

She plans to impose a windfall profits tax on oil companies and using the money to suspend the gas tax for the peak summer months; closing billions in oil and gas loopholes and using the funds to provide assistance for lower-income families to pay their energy and grocery bills; cracking down on speculation by energy traders and market manipulation in oil and gas markets that are driving up the price of oil; pressuring OPEC to increase oil production, including by filing a WTO complaint against OPEC countries; and stopping new additions to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and standing ready to release oil to counter market spikes and reduce volatility.
This information is all at her website; it's a shame that Gov. Warner or his advisers weren't able to do a simple search. More important, AAA Mid-Atlantic reported recently that the average price for a gallon of gas in the DC metro area is $3.60. Drivers are being nickeled and dimed to death every time they go fill up the tank. Try telling them that a gas tax holiday isn't a good idea, Gov. Warner.
Current governor Tim Kaine is going to be rolling out a transportation package that may include a proposed hike in the gas tax. I wonder how that will go over with the General Assembly?
Dear Fellow Americans,
Our Great-grand Nation, the United States of America
is and will face very critical "Challenges" in coming,
months, years, and decades. It is very essential that
we pick out next President on following criteria.
1. A candidate with "Vision and Statesmanship".
2. A candidate with " Stable Character and Morality" .
3. A candidate with "Presidential Temperament" and
"sound Judgment".
4. A candidate with "little Washington exposure" and
"connectedness with New voters".
5. A candidate who "Inspires us up" rather than
"Tears
us down".
In my professional opinion there is only one candidate
left, who bears all the above qualities aand that is
Honorable Senator Obama.
As an independent registered voter since 1974. I voted
for Carter, voted for Reagan, voted for First Bush,
and second Bush in 2000. In the process last interest
and stopped voting.
This time we can not afford to stay on side lines and
let Washington stay the same.
We can not afford our Greatgreat Nation to become less
than what we are and can be.
We need to send clear and candid message to the world
and some 24 hour partisan hateful media. These media
outlets are trying to deprive, dupe, and derail us
from getting it right this time.
They are trying there best to deny us better rather
than bitter future. { Our Greatgrand Nations people
are
persistently and constantly subjected to Psychological
terrorism" thru these hatful partisan media outlets.
We Americans are not going to allow them
psychologically terrorized us and silence the masses.
I am sure that we will get it right this
time and elect Senator Obama our next President. let
us not get dragged down into racism and sexism.
Let us remember that our Greatgrand is constituted of
family, fellowships, friends, faith, funds, fun,
future with fairness and freedom and without fear or
favor.
We can not afford to lose any of above. Let us stand
up, be counted, save, build our Greatgrand Nation for
centuries to come.
God Bless our Great grandNation, its diverse people.
Our future needs stability, security, safety,
sustained progress and restoration of our due status
in this perilous Global World at all levels.

Why is everyone misstating Clinton's Position?
I realize there's a subtlety to this that's too involved for a bumper sticker, but Clinton did not simply propose a gas tax holiday. As the first commenter noted above, what she did, which IMHO was very smart politics, was pivot, answering McCain's silly/pandering gas tax proposal by saying it would have to be paid for by a windfall profits tax on oil companies. Thus, she effectively parried the McCain proposal, while protecting herself from the charge that she was unequivocally against giving consumers a break.
Give her credit for being good at what she does, and that's not a bad thing. By countering with a demand for fiscal responsibility, and shifting the burden (or at least the focus) to the oil companies, she makes McCain's position untenable (as financially irresponsible) while avoiding bad policy, and avoiding the adverse political consequences of an out-of-hand rejection of the McCain proposal.
Obama, by contrast, is technically right on the merits, but he's preaching to his own choir, and by being confrontational instead of negotiational (if that's a word) he leaves himself vulnerable on what should have been a non-issue.
The gas holiday issue reminds me of Gilmore's run for governor of VA, promising days before the election to eliminate the car tax. He won in a close match, but nothing happened to the car tax.
