Obama: "We Are A Better Country Than This"

Excerpts of the Remarks of Senator Barack Obama
“The American Promise”
Democratic National Convention
August 28, 2008
Denver, Colorado
As prepared for delivery
“Four years ago, I stood before you and told you my story – of the brief union between a young man from Kenya and a young woman from Kansas who weren’t well-off or well-known, but shared a belief that in America, their son could achieve whatever he put his mind to.
“It is that promise that has always set this country apart – that through hard work and sacrifice, each of us can pursue our individual dreams but still come together as one American family, to ensure that the next generation can pursue their dreams as well.
“It is why I stand here tonight. Because for two hundred and thirty two years, at each moment when that promise was in jeopardy, ordinary men and women – students and soldiers, farmers and teachers, nurses and janitors -- found the courage to keep it alive.
“We meet at one of those defining moments – a moment when our nation is at war, our economy is in turmoil, and the American promise has been threatened once more.
“Tonight, more Americans are out of work and more are working harder for less. More of you have lost your homes and more are watching your home values plummet. More of you have cars you can’t afford to drive, credit card bills you can’t afford to pay and tuition that is beyond your reach.
“These challenges are not all of government’s making. But the failure to respond is a direct result of a broken politics in Washington and the failed presidency of George W. Bush.
“America, we are better than these last eight years. We are a better country than this.”

So he is going to raise taxes, which leave businesses less money and create new jobs at the same time? He may be high on magic, but fails economics. In addition, he is going to empty the military, throwing more competitors on the job market. And you think unemployment is high now??

Alan, you're stuttering.
Of course, even though he mentions the failed presidency of George W. Bush, he says nothing about holding him or members of his administration accountable for widespread torture or an illegal war.
alan, he's raising taxes on the rich, if you ever payed attention in class you'd remember that consumption is the biggest chunk of economic growth, money given into the hands of the middle class will be spent, on new TV's, cars, remodeling the home, going on vacation, etc., etc.
This in turn means that companies sell more goods and services, and since companies want higher revenue and profit streams they produce more goods and services to sell, this means expanding their labor force and buisness capital, which results in more people being employed, which means more jobs, it is demand, not supply which drives the economy, and demand is driven by income, more money you have in your pocket, the more you have to spend, and the higher the consumer spending the morejobs being created

He says he will only raise taxes on the rich, but to accomplish his strategy of taking care of people from cradle to grave, he will end up raising taxes on everyone.
You can't listen to what comes out of his mouth, but what his policies suggest. A 9.50 minimum wage will kill small businesses around the country. When he does raise taxes on everyone, businesses, low income, high income it will destroy our already weak economy. There is not an economist, who is not on the payroll of the DNC, that thinks raising taxes on businesses and people is good for the economy.
It is clear this guy hates business. There was once a story about a golden goose. Never had a real job, never met a payroll. I would like the names of the "Wall Street firms" he turned down. I have never heard who they were and what the starting offer was. His tax policy will be inflationary (a hidden tax) as the affluent move into tax free muni's which will see the tax equivelent yield skyrocket as marginal rates increase. This will bid up the price of muni's (higher interest rates--another hidden tax) as the demand increases costing school districts, water plants, airports, etc. more money for new projects. This will cause property taxes to increase to pay for them. I've seen this before. When Bush I raised taxes and when Clinton raised taxes, rich people cut staff and raised prices. The unintended consequences will be staggering. I truly think after hearing this speech that this guy really doesn't understand. He is like a guy who thinks perpetual motion is possible. In the end, it always take a force to move the wheel.
Flyover, you're sounding scared.
Let's face it. You love the Bush/Cheney/McCain/Gramm economy. It works for you. That's fine.
But guess what, Fly. YOU don't understand America if you think that the status quo is acceptable.
Either that, or you simply don't want America to succeed.
I have news for you. Reality is calling.
Barack Obama is going to be one of the best Presidents in History. My question to you is: Will you look back and wonder where was your high IQ when you voted AGAINST Barack Obama? Will you once again ignore common sense and dig your hole deeper by sticking with your insulting partisan lies and obfuscations? Reality is calling. Will you answer?
Ethan, Again you call me a liar. Point out one lie above. There is none and all you do is respond with name calling. How much is George Soros paying you. Admit you are on someone's payroll. Not sure how old you are, but I have lived through several tax increases and seen the results. The rich will figure it out. This middle class crap is what it always is, crap. The middle class will end up paying for the socialist president's programs just like they always have. It isn't about the middle class, it is about Obama wanting to give money to the lower class and make you feel good about it. Until this country moves away from a system where the tax system which pits one group against the other and is used for social engineering, this country will never reach its potential. A tax system where fifty percent pay nothing and scream for the other fifty percent to pay even more is a recipie for disaster. A flat tax system where everybody pays something and pays the same would end lobbying. He says he will stop tax breaks to companies that ship jobs overseas and give them to his pet companies. Why not just stop tax breaks period? He says he will give you money to go to college. why not address why college costs so much to start with? This is nothing more than typical liberal driviel. By the way, my JOKE about IQ came from a comment from Joe Biden when a reporter had the temerity to ask what his grades were like in law school. You will not shout me down like the Obama campaing is trying to do by sending threatening letters to GOP donors. Again, tell us who is paying you?
Your whole screed is full of lies and you want me to point out one? Haha
"""The middle class will end up paying for the socialist president's programs just like they always have."""
"""It isn't about the middle class, it is about Obama wanting to give money to the lower class and make you feel good about it."""
Please.
Grow up.
Now I know why Gramm says we are a nation of whiners. YOU are a whiner. He's probably been talking to too many people like you. Well off and whining "why can't it be better for you". You are an insult to American values.
Btw, your "joke" about IQ was stupid and not funny.
Oh, and I pay myself. I am a small business owner and I have been severely limited by this economy. Oh but I thought GOP Rule was "good" for small business. PLEASE. You are the shill. You come out supposedly for Flyover Country, which we all know is the Midwest, and yet you just want more and more and more for yourself while the MidWest is in the midst of economic disaster. You are so selfish, so unkind, so devoid of American Values that it is striking.
Not to mention, you argue all of McShill's same-old talking points about Barack Obama and experience, etc etc. And then he announces Palin for VP and your points all change to taxes taxes taxes. It's no longer funny. You are against America. You are against AMERICA doing better. It is sick.
Interestingly Clinton raised taxes in 1993 and the economy flourished throughout the 1990's to the point there was not a deficit between 1996 - 2001. Raising taxes helps reduce the federal deficit more than lowering taxes. Look at the debt/GDP ratios of Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton and Bush 2. Also, paradoxically there is not a strong correlation between tax policy and business cycles. They are almost mutually exclusive if you look at the history of each of them. So arguing that they are directly linked to each other disregards the historical record.
Also the president only submits economic policy (Feb. 1 of each year). The Congress decides if it will become policy (by Oct. 1 of each year). Either McCain's or Obama's budget submissions will get a major overhall by the spend happy congress, so you don't need to take either of their economic ideas seriously. They will never make it through Congress.
