Diageo/Hotline Tracking Poll: Back To (All) Square One
The latest Diageo/Hotline daily tracking poll, released this a.m., again shows McCain/Palin and Obama/Biden tied, 45-45%. In yesterday's release, McCain/Palin led 45-44%, while in the poll completed 9/7 the race was tied 44-44%.
Since yesterday, Obama/Biden made notable gains among men, cutting their 12% deficit to just 5%. At the same time, however, the Dem ticket lost ground among women; their lead -- which had been 13% on 9/7 and 9% on 9/8 -- has now fallen to just 5%.
McCain/Palin's lead among Inds, which jumped to 19% yesterday, is back to 15% (it had been 14% on 9/7). Among GOPers, the GOP ticket leads 88-5% (up slightly from 87-6% yesterday), and among Dems, the Dem ticket leads 84-9% (up slightly from 82-11% yesterday).
Looking more closely at the data, McCain/Palin does strikingly better among RVs disenchanted with the Bush Admin. than Obama/Biden does among RVs who feel positively about the direction of the country. The GOP ticket pulls more than one-quarter (26%) of RVs who disapprove of Bush, while Obama/Biden draws just 6% of RVs who approve of POTUS.
Similarly, McCain/Palin garners 30% of respondents who feel the U.S. is moving in the wrong direction, while Obama/Biden attracts only 13% of respondents who say the U.S. is going in the right direction.
Today's Diageo/Hotline survey, conducted 9/7-9 by FD, is the third daily installment tracking the two tickets. Party ID breakdown for the 902 RV sample is 43%D, 34%R, 21%I.

I'd just like to know in good faith to my Conservative friends. We disagree on a lot of things. But can we have an election based on the issues?
The pattern of distraction is so obvious. It has been obvious since the first days of the general election. It is time for that to end.
It is time to talk about the issues. The Economy, Iraq, Afghanistan, Energy, Education, Green Job Development all across rural America and in our cities.
America needs to take care of serious issues. We owe it to ourselves and our communities to discuss them.
Enough of the distractions, please.
I suggest that both candidates pledge No Personal Attacks at the 3 debates.
Oh Ethan. What a sham you are. Either that or you're just sadly duped.
Of course McCain will be happy to pledge, just as he did during his convention speech, not to wage a campaign of personal attacks. Then he's going to move forward and promulgate these very same false race and sex baiting advertisements. It's the best of all worlds as far as the immoral John McCain is concerned - act all honorable and well-intentioned so that the voters who are paying attention during the debates see him as a man of ethical rectitude while smearing Obama so that the low information voters think that Obama somehow is promoting sex education for kindergarten aged children.
RTS - I agree that it's lower than low to race bait to win votes.
So how did you feel when Obama race baited against Bill and Hillary Clinton (despite their 30 year history of supporting and promoting civil rights) during the SC primary?
I think you'd have to agree it was despicable.
And it's one of the reasons that a lot of Hilalry's 18 million are saying a loud NO to Baracky!

Nicely done on the triple comment, csh. Really made your point all the more salient to read it three times.
Thanks - some things bear repeating!
That would be great, however, when we see Obama distorting McCain's joke about it taking five mil to be rich and wanting to stay in Iraq for 100 years, it is really hard not to fight fire with fire. He has run a campaign on soundbites with no specifics which might win a primary, but it won't win the general. If you peel away all they hype it comes down to socialism vs capitalism. I don't think Obama wants to have that discussion.
You can try to re-define the debate any way you want, fly.
It's the ECONOMY, stupid.
I would like to see a political race where the canidates were not allowed to talk about their opponent in any form. Just give your qualifications, your plan for reform and/or change, your views of how the people will benefit from your platform and let them decide from there. No name calling, no comparisons to other persons, animals and/or inanimate obects. No ads depicting what they believe their opponents are and/or really saying. Just present themselves. Both sides in this race have pointed fingers at the other. And it is too late to say we can change this campaign now. The damage is done. McCain says Obama has no experience, Obama says people who believe McCain are stupid, Obama not ready to lead, Palin is a pig. Maybe in four years we can have a truly clean race. Just talk about yourself and your qualifications and let the people decide. Accuse me, I will come back from fantasy land and reside once again in the real world now. It was a nice break from reality though.
Ethan
Practice what you preach. Discuss the issues and cut the name calling. Or is that your only issue.
