Jesse Ventura as Emily Post
The Hotline’s Quinn McCord caught up with ex-MN Gov. Jesse Ventura (I) at the MN State Fair this weekend, hoping to discuss the KY SEN race, but instead ended up on the wrong side of a journalistic etiquette lesson.
Ventura’s “Predator” co-star Sonny Landham was briefly the Libertarian candidate for Senate Min. Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) seat before the party disassociated itself with Landham over his statement that Arabs should be blocked from visiting the U.S. to attend school or seek U.S. citizenship.
QTM: “Are you disappointed Sonny Landham was not allowed to run for the Senate in Kentucky?”
JV: “Who are you and why are you taping me?”
QTM: “I’m Quinn McCord with National Journal’s Hotline.”
JV: “Don’t you think you ought to tell me that first before you ask me the question? Wouldn’t that be a little more etiquette and a little more upfront and not quite as sneaky? Are you trying to do something on a Navy SEAL and think you won’t get caught? If we were in the jungle, I’d be garroting you right now. Sneaking up on me like that…”
QTM: “I apologize.”
JV: “Apology accepted. Occasionally I need to chastise you media people. You know, you don’t come up and stick a recorder in someone’s face and not tell them that you’re recording them and not tell them who you represent.”
QTM: “I’m worried about misquoting you is the thing…”
JV: “But if you don’t tell me, then you WILL misquote me. If I know who you are and then you misquote me, then I can come kick your butt. See, that works best.”
QTM: “Well, at least I can say I got beat up by Jesse Ventura.”
JV: “And you won’t be the first. You’ll join a long list. You’ll be in esteemed company. … What did you want to know now?”
QTM: “Are you disappointed that the Kentucky Libertarians didn’t allow Sonny Landham to run for the Senate? Have you heard about that?”
JV: “No I haven’t, so I really couldn’t comment on it because I don’t know anything about it. I did one film with Sonny, and I found him to be a terrific actor and played a character. You know, if you want to go somewhere and be around a character, Sonny’ll fit the bill. And I consider Sonny a friend today, you know, I worked with him and spent 10 weeks with him in Mexico. I know nothing about the political end. I’m not even paying attention to my own political end" [QUINN MCCORD]

God help me, I love Jesse Ventura. Thanks to Quinn McCord for faithfully (I hope) transcribing the encounter sans asides. Based on this, I'd read more McCord. Another journalist might have redacted a few lines in a failed attempt to save face. Any redaction would have shown through, making the journalist appear stuffy, weak, and typical. So: kudos to McCord.
