Obama: Debate Should Continue As Planned

In a press conference called this afternoon to respond to John McCain's decision to suspend his campaign, Barack Obama said that "every American has a stake in solving this crisis and saving our financial system from collapse" but that he is in favor of continuing the campaign and meeting Republican nominee in Mississippi Friday for the first presidential debate of the general election.

"This is exactly the time that the American people need to hear from the person who, in approximately 40 days, will be responsible for dealing with this mess," Obama said. "I think the president's job is to do more than one thing at a time. In my mind it's more important than ever that we present ourselves to the American people and discuss where we want to take the country."

Obama also said its time to put partisan politics aside to craft bailout legislation to revive the nation's flagging economy and noted that he's in regular contact with congressional leaders. But he said there's no reason the candidates can't constructively help to solve the country's fiscal crisis and also present their broader policy positions to the public.

"I believe that we should continue to have the debate," Obama said. "I think it makes sense for us to present ourselves before the American people."

Obama explained his version of the candidates' phone conversation today, saying that he first called McCain this morning at the suggestion of Sen. Tom Coburn, who he said called him with the idea. Obama said that when McCain phoned back at 2:30, he suggested a joint statement outlining their shared guidelines for a bailout package. McCain, he said, wanted a joint meeting in Washington with congressional leaders and "potentially the president."

Obama said he thought they'd left with an agreement to craft the statement. He said he didn't know McCain would suspend his campaign and suggest that the debate should be postponed.

"This is no longer a Democrat or Republican problem," Obama said. "It requires an American solution."

Debate organizers, meanwhile, announced this afternoon that the debate would go on as planned.

Well then he should have anticipated that McCain might make this move.

"This is no longer a Democrat or Republican problem," Obama said. "It requires an American solution."

Time to drop the "post-partisan" shtick and show Republicans how Democrats lead. Too bad he's painted himself into a corner with this.

Just move the debate to the Senate floor.

McCain’s plan is to scrub the Vice Presidential debate. ( Must hide Palin) This is his backdoor way of doing it and blaming the Wall St. trouble.

I am hoping and praying that Obama shows up for the debate. If McCain's chair is empty, the moderators should ask him his and MCain's questions and ignore the fact that chicken McCain isn't there. I believe this is a sneaky ploy to have the VP debate cancelled because Palin can't answer the questions. Why else would McCain want to reschedule the first presidential debate to the scheduled VP debate's date and place? Oh, I just hope Barack doesn't give in to this madness.

I agree McCain is a coward, and of course he is trying to hid the ingnorance of Palin..and this hole "lets stop the campaign thing" is just a bunch of crap McCain can't breathe and walk at the same time...I think he believes that all the american people are stupid enough to think that this move makes him look more concern about the economic crisis...r u kid n me!!!

If McCain wanted to concentrate on the economic crisis then why wait until today to BAIL out of the debate. This crisis has been the main topic for more than a week. Obama is right, the future President of the United States should be able to handle more than one thing at a time. ....or maybe McCain doesn't have the energy and stamina to handle more than one thing at a time. The economic problems did not just happen last week, don't act like this is a suprise McCain. Besides McCain is NOT President and there are many other people dealing with this matter now. McCain should put on his big boy panties and not run and hide. If McCain was needing to give some in put into this crisis why not do so today, tomorrow, Saturday, etc. Finally, has McCain never heard of cell phones, faxes, e-mail??

It was almost predictable that if there is any way that McCain could attempt to get around debating Obama, he'd try to pull it off. The debate is much more of a risk for McCain than for Obama because McCain's "straight talk" slogan is just rhetoric. He's awful at trying to talk straight except for straight from a script. Let's have Obama debating an empty chair if McCain insist on this ruse. That might even be McCain's best option 'cause he can at least put a spin on how important it is for him to ad his economic genius to the deliberation in DC. The fact is, neither of them really need to be there in person in order for Congress to function efficiently and effectively. The people know this but the McCain/Palin loyalist will pretend to embrace his twisted logic. I'd bet on it.

You go Obama! This whole thing today shows McCain to be a coward, not a leader. He just wants to keep the moose hunter from having to participate in a debate. I hope the debate takes place on Friday and McCain's chair is empty, like his head has apparently become. McCain is a desperate man.

We now can see our next President of our country who stands up for our country and for our people. The GOP's are losing their grounds and are now panicking like pigs in the coral and they want us to panic to get their way. This bailout plan is just another corruption in our history. Bush has been friends with other presidents in other countries that greed and corruption is the main game. This is a United States of America and the number country in the world. Don't let these corrupt GOP's ruin our country. Don't buy this people. Stand up for our country.

"THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE ECONOMY ARE SOUND" John McCain - next President of the USA.

If we lose the war on the economy, how are we going to win the war on terrorsim?

All you Republicans who voted for Bush are responsible for this economic crisis. Even the Iranian President at the UN Assembly predicted the collapse of USA as an economic super power. Lets vote Republican again.

I want to know our future president's economic plan. Please do not attempt to stop it.

This is nothing more than a ploy by McCain who have had nothing to say since getting his party nomination. Obama has been talking about Change and McCain decided to jump on that bandwagon and acts as if his ideal. Then he nominates a talking parrot as his running mate, who have three slogan, Bridge to Nowhere, Plane on Ebay and Hockey Mom and Lipstick. His whole campaign has been irrational attacks, just not any attacks. He wanted to suspend the RNC for the Hurricane and now he wants to suspend his WHOLE campaign for the financial crisis that he doesn't believe its going on in the first place (Remember his repeated line about the fundamental of the economy). Well, Mr. McCain, it is about judgement and you have been making all the wrong ones. So go ahead, suspend your campaign! Go run and hide in your office in washington. Go do what you do best and take credit for other people's work. Go save the economy by selling off one of your 8 houses.
You know what is probably so insane to republicans and conservatives alike... they have to smile at the camera and come up with positive thing to say about this crazy old man. But they are use to it, because they have been smiling and saying positive things about George Bush. There are actually a few brave republicans who actually speak their minds and disagree with the choices John McCain made. And remember, it was a guy they never supported in the first place.

Why shouldn't the debate be postponed? I would rather the senators take care of this economic disaster than watch a debate. It takes leadership to change a course. Rather than Obama just following a liberal line of Yes Ma'am and Yes Sirs and trying to please everyone - McCain is a better leader because he can make a decision without fear. Obama has to make sure he doesn't offend anyone and must please everyone. A leader is someone that will take the reigns and forget about pleasing everyone and just do his job.

So I would rather have a debate postpone to another day. Go McCain!!

lilgal..... read up on multitasking

you cant spin this one... im sorry but you fail

The Debate should continue and don't let the devil win. This is the right time to let the people know that Obama was right all along and McCain was just a lying old polician who wants to support his friends before the hell calls him. They messed up this country really well. One of our friend called us last week and confiding us about her financial problem. She went into a very difficult time in her life and she defaulted one of credit card two years ago and went into a collection agency. She have not recieved anything since then. But last week, the bank sent her bills that has been sleeping for two years. We are trying to connect the dots here, with this bailout plan, all the bad loans that the bank lost, even the ones that have been forgotten are trying to wake them up for the bailout compensation. This is really big. The Bush Administration are trying to keep the giant awake for their own good and greed. They couldn't accept that they losing instead of winning. This bailout is suppose to be for the people and not for the greedy. Let those bad loans sleep, don't pass them to the hard working people. When you decided to gamble, you either loose or win. Winning is a good thing and just keep putting more money in your pocket, but you loose accept it, don't pass it on to the TAX PAYERS and the future of our children. Bush is trying to scared us all. This is one of his tactic to get us all in trouble like the war in Iraq. 700 billion is big and hard to swallow it all at once, but Bush has been planning ahead without the knowledge of the American people. This is a sneaky way of ripping people off.  Right now, his cronies are just waiting for their basket to be filled up. People in the Senate and Congress, don't let these people mess up our children's future. We voted for you, and please stand up for us. Bailout is okey, as long as it benefiting the homeowners with one house only.

So are we supposed to postpone the Election too so that John McCan't can go run around doing other crap instead of taking this Election seriously???? You can't make me believe that there isn't someone who can speak for and also vote for by Proxy for either Candidate so that the American people can be given a fair look and ear to what each candidate has to say about ALL TH ISSUES facing this Country..... I'm really beginning to see McCan't as a big JOKE!!!!

The meeting with President Bush is Thursday afternoon. I am sure that McCain and Obama can be in Mississippi by Friday afternoon.

Wow, McCain is really affraid to debate for himself, this is sad, i am so surprised that after seeing him speak and listening to him that people still don't see that he is pretty useless without someone to write something for him to say, or tell him and what he thinks that day.

McCain is not the US president and Obama should not bend to him at this time. He wants people to believe that he is incharge of the whole election No way Mccain you cant address matters of economics when you are ignorant, naive and a Washington insider.

The Failed Bush is still the CEO he should be held accountable until Obama takes over

I think now is the time to listen to the candidates! to hear what they have to say, so that I can make the best choice of the 2.

So what will McCain focus on instead of showing up and giving his side of the story?

It does feel like it's a ploy. I don't think he's smart enough to be scared of Obama, I think he's afraid that he can't memorize his thoughts and ideas.

Does anyone else feel like he's not playing with a full deck, that he parrots his parties ideas and non of his own?

bad jugement, bad decision, bad ulterior intention.
To McCain, its all about winning, he is despirate, the American people will be happier with the charismatic and charming young man who can carry everyone along even the whole forest of the world, a tree they say cannot make forest.

Of course the debates should go on as planned- maybe start with economics instead of foreign policy?... McCain pulled a fast one.. even lied to Letterman, saying he was on his way to Washington while being down the hall being interviewed by Katie Couric. So much for the "straight-talking express." What a joke he is, and Palin, his whole party. Sure- the "dog ate your homework"- but you've got other things to do now. Like Obama says, presidents must multitask. VP's, too. Expose your naked selves- you phonies!

lilgal! You realy should not blog if you DON'T know what your talking about...For instance. There is NONTHING either canidates can do about the "BAIL OUT" other then what they are currently doing IE.. expressing the ideoligy to the (HOUSE) which they have. So to suppend the campaign/debate to go show face does NONTHING as they cannot change anything at this point!

Now (pay attention! What the candidates NEED to be doing is out campaigning which is more effective in terms of being out with the voters wouldn't you think?
Just take time to sort out your thoughts before posting on blogs.
No hard feelings.

Okay McCain, Lets postpone the debate for
the Presidential candidates. If you're
right, this is the single most important issue
facing the American people. That's why you need
your VP the be ready to step in the role from
day one. So, Let the VP candidates start the
debate on behalf of their prospective Presidents
while they then work on a bipartisan solution.
Is Palin ready at short notice in a crisis to
address the American people??? I know Joe is!!!

If you are mavericks and don't subscribe
to the status quo I offer you accept this
proposal.
called

American in Austraila

we had debates during the civil war....we had debates during WWII...we can have debates now!!!

that guy Mccain is a mess. NOt only is he too old to do multitasking, he is too old to understand with the advancement of technology, a lot to things can be done without necessarily being present. Please Americans, forget about the colour and vote for change and let America regain its name as the greatest nation on earth. some of us look up to American but these days we feel like we are about to be orphaned. cancelling the debate means Mccsame has chickened out. no two reasons

What a joke this McCain is. I have made a concrete decision to vote for Obama. This is ridiculous!!!!! Cancel the debate at a time when we need to hear both sides and their plans for our future to run be a part of a mess that was created by the current Repub Administration. Let Bush take the heat for this.....the American people need to know who's going to carry this country out of this economic disaster. Somehow I don't think it's McCain. He doesn't fight fair and I just don't trust him.......

With every faltering step america and its bitches make Obama will be waiting and planning. The death of america and its bitches comes ever closer and there is NOTHING america can ever do about it. Obama will win. America and all women will finally lose this final war. And on the day America and all bitches die it is Obama who will quietly raise his great head. It is Obama who will make the white house burn. It is Obama who will win.

OBAMA 08!

Come on McCain is that the best you've got. I know you can't remember how many homes you own, but surely you do know you have access to a private plane. Mississippi is only a 1 hour flight from DC. So here's a schedule for you:

5 am- Get up and do what ever it is you do to get ready

6 am- Morning Coffee and what ever it is old guys eat

7am- Review Debate Notes and craft more lies to tell the American people.

8am- Head to the Hill to screw-up Bail Out

9 am- Meet with the Peeps on screwing-up bail out

10 am- Meet with Advisor regarding Project Blackberry (they say I invented it, but I have no clue what is)

11 am- Remind Palin not to talk to the Media

11:30am- More meetings on stupid bail out, note to self, find out what short-sell means

12:30am- Lunch, prepare for debate, figure out another way to get Palin out of her debate with Joe

1pm- Finalize Stupid bail out plan and remind some staffer to get me one of those Blackberry things

3pm- Offer more of my 2 cents on the bail out plan

5:30pm- Get a hair cut, I'm ready for my close up

6pm- Sweet these blackberry things are really cool

6:30pm- Off to Old Miss

8:00pm- Go over these notes again "The fundamentals of the economy are strong", who put that in there, that was last week's pitch

9:00pm- Debate: Note to self don't tell stupid jokes; that bomb-Iran thing didn't go over so well the last time

11:30pm-I'm up pass bedtime, he-he-he

Now I'm sure this probably interferes with your normal day of hatching new and interesting gimmicks for the American people to enjoy. I give you credit we've all had a big laugh on the whole Palin VP pick. How long did it really take you to come up with that one? But Senator multi-tasking has never hurt anyone, and I'm sure a man with 7 house can surely juggle a few hours for a debate into his busy schedule.

McCain will be at the debate - he, unlike Obama (Mr. No-Show for us Illinoisians) is accountable for his state and responsibilities at this time.
I'm all for the bailout -- as long as each legal US citizen (all 305,252,000) gets either an interest-free loan or a check from these companies for $231,000 within 3 years. That's each taxpayer's share of this mess.
So...what happens if these companies go under anyway????

I think that McCain should have shown courtesy by phoning Obama of his plans first. Obama should not have known of McCain's suspension on the television first. That's underhanded. Oh, yes, McCain and company has time to prepare for a postponed debate. But so does Obama. So, it's still equal as long as Obama and company doesn't stop preparing for the debate.

Mccain's honesty is under question again. Is this guy a true mverick or just an opportunist who turns an urgly situation like the 'Kitten 5' to his political advantage? We have seen his style of leadership manifesting itself again, when an honest politician such as Obama gesture to him to make a joint statement about the economy, he sidelined him to rush to the Tv set and proclaiming himself as a true stateman on the ecomomy that he'd helped plunged into a mess. The last couple of days, he's done nothing but confused the American people about the state of the economy, stating first: "the fundemantals of the economy is sound" If you replay many of the soundbites repeatedly, it signifies a man who is confused not only about the economy, but about foreign affair, by declaring a new war on Russian after it is clear that his friend the President Georgia started the war. With his abysmal performance, he is not qualified to be President.

If we put an old man who has nothing but political tricks up his sleeve and is not honest with the American people into office, we will get what we deserve. And it won't be pretty. I am looking for another country. This one is not serving it's people very well. 70 billion for the wall street fat cats and no health care for Americans. Not good. One of my best friends died of cancer recently because she had no health care and couldn't get the treatment she should have had. Pathetic.

We have an election going on in Canada right now, but it's not nearly as entertaining as yours. As an outsider, who has no stake in your elections, I'm amazed by the blinders the American people and media have on when it comes to Obama. I have a son who just graduated from high school and I hear that Bill Gates has stepped down as CEO from Microsoft. I think I should encourage my son to apply for that job. Hey if a community organizer can run for President, why can't a high school grad run Microsoft. No difference!!

I BELIEVE THE DEBATE SHOULD GO ON AS PLANED.AMERICA IS IN A TIME OF CRISIS AND WE NEED TO HEAR FROM THESE TWO CANDIDATES WHO ONE WILL BECOME PRESIDENT IN THE NEXT FIVE WEEKS.RIG OBAMA IS LOOKING VERY PRSIDENTIAL TO ME.YOU GO BARAK.

It is really interesting when you research the origins of posts on this sight, to how many come from the exact same place. Only the names have been changed. At first I really believed that their was that many out there who thought the same way, but their are only a few of you aren't there. If you would like, I can post an example. This is a very good example of propaganda, it gives the illusion of disgruntled masses. And seeks out those who long to belong. My class has been working off of this post and six others for the past 12 months and I will post our analysis upon completion.

Look, one of thes guys is going to have to deal with the ramifications of this financial agreement for the next four years. It makes perfect sense to me that both of these guys should be on board and at the meeting helping to hammer this thing out, unless of course they want to maintain some kind of plausible deniability.

I have voted for every Democratic Presidential candidate since 1984 and this time, and I can't believe I am saying this, I think I am going to the dark side and vote Republican. (Woo, I had to pause a second to see if I was struck by a stray lightening bolt for even uttering that thought.)

As for the scrubbing the debate, I say postpone it but do not scrub it. I think actually doing something like trying to hammer out this deal makes more sense than getting in your talking points at a debate. Words can be wonderful, but they are just words. Action is what is needed.

ENOUGH! Let the American systems work. Congress can do it's work without two senators. Both McCain and Obama have missed deliberations on bills before and the vote on the bills. Atleast Obama's stated stop gates to protect the people such as no CEO pay outs, repayment of debt and oversight have been adopted and McCain has agreed to them to the point that he is positioning them in his speeches as if they were his ideas.

Of course McCain Blindsided Obama with this move... really. What intelligently run campaign for president that is sincere and trying to win with analysis, wisdom, and good intentions would ever expect such a BONEHEAD move from the other party campaign???
Looking back on it and comparing it to the last 3 months of McCain's campaign, one could easily say, oh yeah, i guess that we could have expected something like that from his staff.
But the core of it is this... no one thats got integrity and common sense thinks like McCain's staff of moral midgets that do the ridiculous things they do.

Just do the debate and let mcsame sit in DC by himself doing photo ops with Bush.

How quickly you Americans forget, Obama was the one who was complaining about doing yet another debate when he had to go up against Hilary. McCain never said he wanted to CANCEL the debate, just to postpone it until the financial disaster was averted. Here in Canada we prefer our leaders to actually DO SOMETHING when there is a crisis, not just give a speech about it. The whole world is watching and not everyone is impressed by your Mr.Obama. I just had a question, is Oprah a major shareholder in CNN. It sure seems that way!

In 2006, to avoid the melt down we're experiencing today, the Republicans and Alan Greenspan wanted legislation for regulation and oversight regarding fannie Mae and Freddie Mac ... but, the Democrats blocked it. The same Democrats, Pelosi and Reid, with the 15% favorability rating. Now, with the biggest bail out in history, Reid criticizes McCain for wanting to participate in the solution. And, if Obama gets elected, we could also face four years of a tax and spend White House and Congress ... who will be responsible for oversight. It's called having the foxes guarding the hen house ... again.

YOU ASK OBAMA

McCain: This old man thinks he’s smarter than all Americans. He is still trying to imagine another scenario to attract the attention of the American press and the Americans compassion. He has already done this twice.

The Palin’s boost is over and McCain wants to create another one. Enough is enough. He thinks he’s right but he’s wrong.

Here is the reality: Facing Obama on Friday 26 September 2008 is for McCain the end of his political career and his personal ambition for the American presidency in 2008.

After accumulating gaffs after gaffs, mistakes after mistakes, McCain wants to be at the top of the U.S., above President Bush, above all parties. He wants to make himself a father of the American nation. He’s wrong.

"A carpenter does not become easily painter because he wants". In this American crisis, economists are more gifted than McCain. Let us them doing the job.

After that cunning, McCain wants to say to the American people:
For McCain = COUNTRY FIRST. He thinks that the American people have easily to forget the mess they have done. Him, Bush and the republican party.

We fund truly that McCain = I, me and myself.
McCain = My 7 houses, my 13 cars and doing everything I can (even selling my soul), to become president.

The worst thing he is avoiding is to be found guilty of bad policy of Bush, his administration and his party, unable to handle the stress of fear of losing the momentum, ignorant to propose the correct answers in the midst of the American crisis and being found without real vision for the real Americans problems (no one every week), McCain wants to invent a new parade. Shame on him.

Being a Good soldier doesn’t mean becoming ready or good to lead America. Obama is ready to lead. The Harvard University gave him that ability. We need his new kind of leadership in America and in the world.
