Romney: I'm Not Interested In A Cabinet Position

RNC icon (2).gif

MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- Don't call Mitt Romney 'Mr. Secretary.'

Romney told reporters this morning that he does not want a cabinet position in a John McCain administration, saying that he would not relish being "soldiered by 27-year-olds in the White House," as his father did during his days as HUD secretary.

"That is not an attractive position in my view," Romney said, citing the experience of his dad, George Romney, who served as the head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Richard Nixon after his defeat in the 1968 presidential race. "I've seen it too close-hand to think that's something for me."

In a press conference after remarks to the Utah delegation, Romney said that he expects to remain in the public sector after the November election and will not return to the business world, as many have speculated. But he demurred when asked about a second try at the Oval Office.

"I do not anticipate doing it again," he chuckled. "It's hard to imagine doing that."

But even if he's not hoping for a gig in a McCain administration, Romney was on message, praising veep pick Sarah Palin and slamming her counterpart, Joe Biden, whom he said has under his belt "30 years of being wrong on foreign policy, by and large." He called Palin's campaigning ability "terrific" and noted that her identity as a maverick fits McCain's message.

The governor denied reports that his allies, along with those of MN Gov. Tim Pawlenty, grumbled that the two top VP contenders had been used as decoys by the McCain campaign during Palin's selection process. "That's simply not accurate," he said.

Despite being peppered with questions from reporters about his future now that he's officially been passed over for the second-in-command spot, Romney may have felt this morning like he'd come home. No, not to Boston.

Romney urged the loyal Utah delegation not to cast ballots for him during the scaled-back RNC.

"I want to make sure that everybody who was a Romney supporter makes it loud and clear and understood that we support the ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin," he said.

Cabinet position? he's way too busy throwing banana peels in front of Gov. Palin. His sights are set higher than a mere cabinet position.

He would be great at Treasury and I very much doubt that 27-year-olds in the White House treat the Treasury Sec. (or the Defense Sec. or the Sec. of State) the way they treat the HUD Secretary. He should keep his option open on that one.

Romney is a great humanitarian and social conservative. I'm saddened that religious bigotry slowed his progress in Iowa. Now the country will have to pay for their stupidity.

I don't think Romney should take a cabinet post either although Secretary of State or Secretary of Defense would add to his resume.

At least now the dopey media can get out of his face.

To just me: What banana peels? Some of you can't get over an unfounded hatred of Romney can you? He has been nothing but supportive of McCain and now Palin all the way since he dropped out of the primary. Notably, he has been the most gracious of the former candidates and has never spoken badly (even remotely) of the rest since dropping out. You can't say the same of McCain or Huckabee. Some of you don't know honor when you see it. If I were Romney, I'd politely decline anything but Sec of State, which McCain is not at all likely to offer. Watch. Romney will do what he can for McCain/Palin during the rest of the campaign. Then he'll move on to something where his unique talents and ability to build and fix will make a serious difference in our world. For his part, McCain will continue to have a difficult time expressing due appreciation and respect for what Romney has done for him. Palin will do better at that. Yet Romney won't whine.

We can thank Huckabee and his Haters for not having the best man running for president.

How about Chief of Staff? He should be a top advisor to McCain. The man knows how to communicate and to manage. If McCain doesn't take advantage of Romney's skills, it is the Nation's loss.

My guess is that Romney is disillutioned with the narrow mindedness of the Republican Party. I know that I am. Why should he continue to put his family and his church through what has been happening this year? A very talented man tried to offer his services and was rejected for something most personal and no one else's business. In complete contrediction to the admonition of the founding fathers that there be no religous test. It is the country's loss. Romney acted with great honor.

I am still heartbroken that Romney wasn't chosen as VP. He is more qualified to be president than any other candidate who ran this year.

It's actually quite sickening to me that we are choosing a president based on skin color, gender and religious beliefs rather than the person who can do the best job for all Americans.

Romney fans confuse me. Is it the current Romney you like or the one that claimed to be more liberal than Ted Kennedy on gay rights?

In any case, Romney will keep his powder dry. He is waiting for the emergency phone call from McCain when the campaign decides to dump Palin.

Less government and freedom frees people to live better lives, by and large. We know this, and relearnded it with Reagan and Thatcher. It was known and followed all over the world, most recently in the Baltics and eastern Europe.

Knowing this, and having gone to Harvard, and been in buisness, and seen what economic failures Michigan, New York, Massachusetts and the older, more socialistic Northern states........How come Mitt only became a conservative the last few years?

He is very, very well educated. He did well in finance. He saw business and young people flee Massachusetts.

Was he cowardly? Or craven? Or, how can you not see what is going on in until you are in your late 50s?

Or do you want to be President so much, that you will say what you feel you need to?

Sorry Mitt, and thanks. The GOP has plenty enough RINO panders.

Ah, shut up Paul. You're a dope.

Interesting . First part, commanded silence. Second, an ad homonym.

Anyways, does anyone have the explanation as to why Mitt only became a conservative the last few years? Was it his poor education? No, we know that's not the case. Was it his poor economic skills? No. So, what was it?

I heard it said, 'He's changed'. What caused it? What was the catalyst that caused it? The only thing I can see was he wanted to talk his way through the primaries.

I'm open to any other explanation.

I find Mitt an interesting guy, in a Shakespearian/Greek tragedy way. But, then I'm a dope, so I would, wouldn't I?

I think Secretary of State is the only position Romney should accept. He's got more executive experience than Obama, Biden, McCain and Palin combined and he doesn't need to step backwards.

I hope he finds something rewarding to do for our country so that his talents and experience are not wasted. It's a shame that Americans were either too stupid or too bigoted to realize what a great man they had running for president. It is the Nation's loss.

Republican leadership has definitely noticed his intelligence, work ethic, and team-player mentality. I know I'll be there to support him in ANYTHING he wants to do in the future.

Bigotry robbed America of the only hope America had for a President who would have worked night and day to get our economy on track. He would have handled foreign affairs effectively. So sorry we lost a great opportunity for America.

Snot-nosed 27 year olds and Ivy League inbreeding are what is wrong with the country. Especially 27 year old snot-noses from the Ivy League.

Paul,
I would get into explaining to you why Romney was always conservative, but you either don't understand the nature of politics (first getting elected in Mass., so that he could enact conservative principles), or you simply don't really care to ever concede that you never really liked Mitt personally. That's fine. That's the nature of electing fellow citizens to public office, personally feelings count. At the end of this day though, Romney is not seeking office any longer there's no need for anyone to instruct you any longer. I'm quite confident that you've had your disingenuous question here answered several times within the past year and you're only seeking conflict.

You ARE a dope. Romney was a hyper-competent Republican governor that got himself elected to a very liberal state. Think he could get in yelling "beat up them gays in the name of Jay-sus, yeehaw!" and firing a gun in the air, you mensa candidate? This is a conservative that was able to operate effectively in a generally liberal-controlled state polity and push solidly conservative policies. When he switched to the national stage he was able to make a pitch to a more conservative audience, that's when he "became" a conservative.

Most people could figure out the simple realities of compromise and strategic positioning that arise from operating successfully in a hostile political environment, but not a dope.

What's with McCain choosing a candidate who has a pregnant daughter? Did he do any vetting at all? I really liked Palin when she came on the scene, but what else is going to come out? We all know Romney is squeeky clean. Oh, I forgot, Evangelicals trust a man who cheated multiple times on his former wife over a "mormon" who has always been faithful to his 1st and only wife.

Romney was the best candidate to be President. Like another poster said, too bad Huckabee and his prejudiced followers screwed up the election. I'd also like to see different states get to vote first in the primaries instead of always Iowa and New Hampshire going first.

Romney is a very smart man and perhaps knows very well this election is a sinking ship for the GOP. Rather then act like a rat escaping a sinking ship he is organizing the band to play on deck as the SS GOP goes down. He is demonstrating that he has no bitterness even though anyone else would take parting shots and flip the bird long ago. He knows when the ballots from November come to pass he will be the one to carry the GOP in 2012 and that his time will come. It's because he has led an example on how a political party should be run united and the appalling antics of Huckabee & McCain during the primaries is something we should avoid when picking a leader. While McCain may have called Romney a 'Flip Flopper' for changing his views, McCain has done massive acrobatic back flips on more policies compared to Romney changing from Pro Choice to Pro Life. Huckabee acted like a Wessel and scoundrel during the Primaries by stirring up his Evangelical base with Anti Mormon hype and even when Romney withdrew pressed on with a No Romney for VP campaign. I often wonder what November would have been if Romney had been the Republican Nominee. This election and for the next 4 years we will get a lesson in what happens when the best candicate is pushed out and what happens to people who believe the words of Muck Rakers. If we have leant anything it will be that when all the candicates are attacking the one candicate in the primaries that's the one that should get our vote. ROMNEY 2012.

Why do people ignore Romney's liberal record? It's there for all to see.

Stop blaming everyone else for Romney's failure. His own liberal record sunk his campaign. Some of us can actually read and chose not to support an election year conservative. He would have sunk the ticket in November because the Dem's have all the amunition they need just by airing the you-tube videos of his liberal speeches and debates. Go and see for yourself.

Angela,
Please do tell us who the conservative purist is that you support?

Thanks to all the hypocrites, I mean evangelicals, the nation has been deprived of a great leader. Way to go bigots! I was sure that religious bigotry has no place in choosing the president of this great country. Yet, you proved me wrong. You will be sorry.

Thank The Southern Baptist... Under no circumstance would they accept a Mormon in the Whitehouse even if it ment voting for the devil himself.....

After much prayer, I voted for Romney in the primaries. However, unfortunately, Romney never really connected with voters. He seemed stiff, scripted, and visually too 'perfect'.

I expect President McCain will find a way to go on.

Romney should have little trouble finding a CEO position somewhere; he will be a lot happier not having to do a job he considers beneath him. I'll be happier if he stays out of presidential politics in future -- at least until his positions are finished 'evolving' and we learn what he actually stands for.

I wouldn't want a position like that either if I was worth three quarters of a billion dollars either. *next topic

Mr. Romney; should you read this, I really do encourage you to take an offer for a Cabinet Secretarial Post, only if you believe and know that Mr. McCain and Mrs. Palin will accord you the greatest respect and working conditions, should they win.

Abraham Lincoln selected some pretty tough Republican Prmary contenders/rivals of his, as Cabinet Secretaries, and they stuck with him for the long haul. Mr. Lincoln was interested with divergent viewpoints that would keep his decision-making process fresh and innovative.

I WAS a believer of yours, before you had to bow out, and remain so, as long as you have that truly altruistic sense of duty to our nation, through National Service, as your Dad obviously did. Please, please, do keep an open mind, about this issue, Mr. Romney; you would be wonderful, in performing the duties for whatever Secretarial Post you were offered--I really believe that!

MITT TAKE THE SECRETARY JOB! YOU ARE THE BEST FOR ANY JOB! SHOW THEM MITT!

Listen all you pro-Romney folks. Yes, I wanted him there too, but stop saying that this was only a religious issue with Republican voters. Truth is, Mitt made a "deal with the Devil" to get elected in Massachusetts. Fine and dandy. But his subsequent swerve to the right to run for President didn't come off as real (especially in light of his being a life-long hunter, etc., etc.). Over the next four years, Romney needs to show that what he said during the campaign was genuine. If he does, he'll be fine for the next cycle.

I don't blame Romney. There is no sense in moving backwards. It's the same reason I would never take a job for something less than my talents and capabilities are unless absolutely necessary. A man with Romney's talent should seek opportunities that make him more than he is, not less. I agree. Certainly Romney must be dillusioned by the media dogs that painted him as a pandering opportunistic flip-flopper. There is no sense in dragging those things that he deems special and personal (his family, his ability, his religion) through the dirt any more than was needed. I wish Romney all the best of luck in his future endeavors whatever they may be.

I find it interesting that Huckabigot felt Romney was not the man due to his change of position on abortion, etc. and yet he felt Liberman and Ridge (both of which are pro-choice) would be good VP running mates for John McCain. I think Huckabigot showed his real colors with that type of thinking. Set Romney's christian religion aside, he is a builder, a fixer, a man with vision and strategy. Strong conservative values and principles will help our country more than anything else. We need this guy! Go Romney 2012.

Romney's loss is this country's loss. He is a man of great intellect, character and vision. I agree that he came off as a stiff campaigner and that McCain and Huckabee colluded to deny him the nomination. Huckabee is far more liberal than Romney and the evangelicals have demonstrated a narrow-minded bigotry that would not be tolerated against any other group than the Mormons. His positions did move right but as a conservative that works for me. I personally know people that know him and he is above reproach and as conservative as they come, and certainly alot more conservative than McCain. But the haters got what they wanted. Romney not on the ticket. I personally really like Sarah Palin - maybe enough to overcome my dislike for John McCain. There is no one who could offset my distaste for Huckabee - he is a psuedo-Christian. He is slick and greasy and without redeeming qualities. If Mitt doesn't want a cabinet position, then he shouldn't take one. He doesn't owe anyone anything at this point. We had our chance and now it's our tough luck. We'll be stuck with Obama or McCain.

I lived in Boston until 2001 and for those trying to say that Romney only recently became conservative - you have got to be kidding! Go back and read the Boston Globe on his 1994 and 2002 runs. The killed him for being TOO conservative for Massachusetts. Yes, in 1994 he said he would support gay rights, but back then the debate was about equal rights in the work place and discrimination in housing - NOT marriage. He was pro-choice but, again, the Globe murdered him on that issue because he expressed his belief that while he supported a woman's right to choose, he thought abortion on demand was immoral. His "change" was only one of policy and not morality. Conservatives, especially the so called religious right, have shown that they don't really want a conservative, which Romney is, and McCain and Huckabee are not.

America is over infused with anger-based politics and has not been focused on merit-based selection of its leaders for some time.

A merit based selection would have resulted in Mitt Romney for VP, and quite possibly for President.

Sarah Palin is delightful, but she has surely been selected in part to appeal to "angry women" who wanted Hillary, and now want to punish Obama for having not chosen Hillary as VP.

What is most interesting to me is how Sarah Palin might, simply by being a wonderful example of an American woman, deal a much deserved termination to the "feminist" movement, which is so lacking in better or even equal examples of American women. Letting an anger based movement dry out and expire under the bright sunlight emanating from Sarah Palin could be a real side benefit of her having been chosen by McCain.

Let American women now emulate a truly great American woman, Sarah Palin, and stop listening to the angry feminists and their mantra of hatred towards this country.

Mitt needs to stay away from McCain if he wants a future in politics. If McCain wins in four years we will hate him and his administration just like we hate George Bush. We have John McCain because the republican party manipulated this race. We had Thompson in there to split the vote, and as soon as McCain pulled ahead he pulled out giving us another corporate whore.

America-we have problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can instantly spot a Huckabee fan. They hate Romney for evolving or changing his positions. Yet only a few of his positions have ever changed. And they have changed once, in the right direction, without changing back. The rest of the field have changed or evolved constantly, including and especially McCain, even on core socially conservative issues. For heaven's sake, just last week he was about to choose Lieberman or Ridge as VP! Yet McCain is not hated by Hucksters. Why is that? Romney remains one of the most constant, dependable and virtuous candidates the nation has ever seen. His conservative accomplishments stack up against and normally eclipse those of any contemporary rival. Revisit what went on at ground level in Iowa, mostly unreported by the media. You people are just plain wrong. What you have done is unjust and short-sighted. I am sorry for you and the nation. Romney will move on and will serve in significant ways. Those that supported him will continue to fight for the same right causes. Your bitterness will be endured and we will seek to repair the damage you have caused.

Huckabigot is more to blame for the loss of Romney. He was the most qualified of the bunch, however I do like this gal Palin. I think the best position for Romney would be Chief of Staff. His intellect would benefit President McCain and he would have considerable input in picking the rest of the cabinet.

#1 I am an avid Gov. Huckabee supporter

#2 I am a Christian (Follow Christ of the Holy Bible

I just wanted to get that out of the way.

I do not hate Gov. Romney and I did not vote against him because of his religous beliefs. As a matter of fact all of my friends that supported Gov. Huckabee never even mentioned his beliefs accept in the process of talking about the drive-by media (to use words from Rush). The people that made the biggest deal about his beliefs were Sean Hannity (Great American) and Rush Limbaugh (Talent on loan from God) because they did not want Gov. Huckabee having a chance. Of course this caused Sen. McCain to get nominated so I blame the big-time talk show host for this.
I know that here in the south Gov. Romney was not even talked about for the Republican Presidential candidate.
I am tired of this idea (pushed by Gov. Romney supporters like Sean Hannity) that Gov. Huckabee took votes away from Gov. Romney. It just isnt true. I would have never voted for Gov. Romney (and neither would my friends) becuase of his record.
Here is the order of people that I would have voted for.
1. Huckabee
2. Duncan Hunter
3. Tom Tancredo
4. I would never have voted for these guys.
Romney, Guliani, McCain, and Ron Paul.

Now that being said I had to come to a decision under what circumstances I would vote for McCain in the General Election. So I told my wife I would decide on who he picked for his running mate.

McCain did it right. I was not excited about McCain and was not going to do anything to support his run but that has changed. Sarah Palin got my vote. I knew that whoever was the VP running mate would have a shot at the top spot next time and so it really mattered to me. I will support this ticket anyway that I can.

For all of you Romney supporters I say good job. I dont ever think that he would have had a chance if it wasnt for all the media attention but I commend you on running a good race.

I do hope that Gov. Huckabee will have a second chance but just like Gov. Romney I dont think either one of these will be our President ever.

If you would like to find out more about avid Huckabee supporters and what we think I encourage you to visit www.hucksarmy.com.

I truly hope that I have not offended anyone.

Have a blessed day

His ego will not allow him to take something as demeaning as a cabinet position, not enough power and glory. I am so glad he did not get the nod for the top spot. The waffle man would have been a terrible choice. He,like Clinton, make decisions based on the polls. Look at the disastrous decisions he made as governor of MA. If he had convictions he would not approved all of the anti conservative things he did, but he was more concerned with his political future and not doing what was right. In my opinion Mr Romney is not qualified for a cabinet position. I expect a candidate to walk the walk and not just talk the talk. His actions as governor says he is not a conservative at all. Actions do speak louder than words.

I would love to see Romney as Chief of Staff OR make a run for Governor of California as Ronald Reagan did....Pete Wilson did too....there are some great issues in California coming up...Diane Feinstein is apparently going to make a run for it, too.

We need a coservative voice in the Governor's office in California. The Austrian guy needs to go back to the movie industry and take out the bad guys on film.

Whaaaaaa
If Mr. Romney cant get a glitter position then he packs up his marbles and goes home. What a self centered noodle. What happened to the I just want to serve the American people.I am so glad he did not win.

Mitt Romney is a good man, and a great example of the Mormon relegion and it's beliefs. But he is NOT the Mormon relegion in any way shape or fourm. I am a strong LDS Woman and I do not need a Mormon to be elected President to valadiate my Relegious beliefs, my church or membership in the LDS Church. It is true on its own merits. LDS people get over the loss and celebrate the Pallin pick, she is a great example of a Wife, mother, community service leader, loving her neighbor as herself, commitment to the life of children, and the love of God. it is refreshing to see a feminine lady in politics. Sarah knows who she is and what she has been called upon to accomplish. Funny all you LDS people, she is what we would call a strong and beautiful daughter of God!

I voted for Governor Romney in the primary, but I have to say that these remarks, if he was properly quoted, make him seem to be just a self-important spoiled rich guy. Thank goodness Senator McCain chose a real genuine person to be his Vice President. Mitt Romney had everything going for him this year, except for authenticity. Most people feel that he never did share with us who he really is.

I suspect Romney’s comments about a cabinet position may look silly in a few months when Obama is selecting his cabinet. McCain’s selection of Palin--probably the best selection possible--may not be enough to win the election.

I had hoped to see a November match-up between Romney and Obama. Why, because they both are men of intelligence, cooperation, action and improvement. I am tired of stagnant Washington (bickering, inaction, decade’s long problems, words without actions, corruption, embarrassment, partisanship, etc.) However, my desire to see these two good men in a battle was also my biggest worry about this election. I suspect Obama, if elected, will shake-up Washington. The changes he makes may not be the best course for this country.

If McCain wins we get a maverick. What good is a Maverick? I want a reformer not a maverick. Arafat was a maverick and when he was given the chance to govern, he, in the words of Bill Clinton, passed up the best chance for Arab/Israeli peace. Since Romney left the primary elections there has been little discussion of what the GOP will do if it wins the White House.

Whoever wins, I pray that they will have the inspiration from Heaven necessary to lead this country.

I am curious how many of the posters actually got to experience the effects of Romney's term as governor of Massachusetts. The net result was higher taxes (property and use) for middle income wage earners, even worse schools, more patronage spending, and not one of the boondoggles and swindles endemic to Massachusetts government for the last hundred plus years eliminated.
His governing style was to make empty gestures and avoid political battles that would earn him serious political enemies.
After carpetbagging his way into the election (being at the time a Utah resident), Romney did none of the things he said he would do to reduce waste and corruption in state government.
He has been a good at making money, though not that great at making jobs in the private sector. In the public sector he has done nothing of note. Why would you want him, rather than someone like Bill Owens (two term Republican governor of Colorado) who was successful both in the private sector and as a governor?
Romney as president will only continue the destruction of the middle income American lifestyle that Reagan so successful started.

Thank that goof- called Huckabee for hating Romney and now we left with Obama Thanks to this idiot

And where was Ann Coultier the know everything when it ame to endorsing Romney, no she wants Hillary and some unknown.

Obama has never run anything but crimnal activities, and Romney has run companies and turned them around so the America people have no one to blame if they get goof-balls like Huckabee or Obama. This is not a pop culture contest. And where was Nuet Gingrich and the Christians when it came to Romney and endorsing him. So now they might get what they all deserve - Obama the abomination of America - serves them all right
