I'm Not A Plumber, But I Play One On TV

When Barack Obama and Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher (aka Joe The Plumber) met recently in Ohio, the two got to talking about small businesses. Wurzelbacher told the senator he's a "plumber" and he's looking to buy a company. Obama asked how long he'd been a plumber. "Fifteen years," Wurzelbacher replied.
Oh, really?
Wurzelbacher registered as an apprentice with the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council in November 2003, according to Dennis Evans, spokesman with the Department of Job and Family Services. Records show his training, which was sponsored by A & W Newell Co. of Toledo, should have wrapped last year.
"We don't have a record of completion," Evans said. "All we know is that he registered in the program and has gone through to the point where we should have record of completion, but we don't."
And that's not the only record that's missing from Wurzelbacher's file. He doesn't have a plumbing license required by the city of Toledo to practice, according to a staffer with the Toledo Division of Building Inspection. Wurzelbacher, who now works for Newell Plumbing & Heating Co., said the owner, Al Newell, has a plumbing license and that "because he works for someone else, he doesn't need a license."
But even that's not true, according to the Toledo Division of Building Inspection. Wurzelbacher can't legally do plumbing work without a license, regardless of his boss's certification.
A staff person with the Toledo Division of Building Inspection told On Call this afternoon that her division will contact Wurzelbacher to notify him that he can't work without a license.
"We're trying to track him down," she said.
In the meantime, the Democrat-friendly local plumbers' union is fuming.
"He has no license whatsoever with the city of Toledo," said Tom Joseph, the business manager for Local Union 50 of the Plumbers, Steamfitters and Service Mechanics, which has endorsed Obama. "He has no license in the state of Ohio. He has no contractor's license in the state of Ohio. He is not a plumber. He works for a plumber."
What about Wurzelbacher's claim that he is "gettin' ready to buy a company that makes about two hundred and fifty, two hundred and seventy, two hundred and eighty thousand dollars a year" ... ? Wurzelbacher told reporters that when he was hired by Newell six years ago "the possibility of him eventually buying the company was discussed during his job interview."
According to Joseph, Newell Plumbing & Heating is far from a $250K-a-year operation. Newell is running "a two-man shop," he said. "This is not a thriving business."
Isn't there a chance it could be worth $250K? "Oh, God no," Joseph said. "Maybe if he sells him the house, the garage." He explained that the address for the business "is where the man lives at."
"The real Joe Plumbers are for Barack," Joseph added.

Lets see, lots of folks are steamed about illegal aliens coming into the country and taking jobs from Americans because they're willing to work for lower pay and work outside the law.
How different is Joe's case? Isn't he taking away work from other licensed plumbers that are willing to play by the rules? Given the facts, I don't see the outrage over the impact of Senator Obama's tax plan on Joe and definitely this isn't a case where Joe's concerns are over his own personal situation but rather an expression of his own political views. That's fine, but the way this guy was used by McCain is a bit ingenuous, don't you think? Even if the guy initially enjoyed the ride. His boss may turn out to be a little unhappy with his employee. I hope he doesn't take it out on Joe. Joe's got enough problems.

Why can't the business be worth 250k? It may not be now but with hard work, you could add plumbers and trucks and next thing you know, it is a thriving small business. It is called the American Dream. And if a small business with 500k of income is going to pay an additional 90K plus in taxes, that means you cannot buy an additional truck and hire an additional plumber. That is why the tax increases will hurt the economy.

My understanding is that Ohio is like California where as the owner of my Plumbing business, I of course have to have a license, but my plumbers do not. Nothing in that nonsense says that he hasn't been plumbing for 15 years.

It was the McCain campaign and Fox news that brought Joe into the spotlight. It was last week that Joe talked with Obama and Fox and McCain campaign saw the interaction and decided to use it against Obama. I would like to first comment on how quick and detailed this reporting is. You have worked diligently and efficiently on this acquaintance of Obama. I know it has only been a few days but you have done a remarkable job. This man that asked a question of a presidential candidate as he Obama walked in his (Joe's) neighborhood. Is that Joe’s actual house in the background of the video? It is amazing the lengths that people will go to plant hard questions.
I was really interested in getting more information. Can I request you do the same diligent investigation on some of his (Obama) other acquaintances.
Especially one that was one of the first to hold a gathering to launch Obama's political career in his own home (the man’s). I believe his name is William Ayers. I heard that he had a very questionable past and may have later even hired Obama to run a board that he (Ayers) set up in Chicago to handle a grant he had been given. You do not need to go all the way back to when the man did the bad things, I think Obama was only 9 or so. Just go back to the years around when he (Ayers) set up the charity and later hosted Obama at his home. That should be sufficient.
The charity was suppose to be set up to improve education test scores in Chicago, but shared the wealth with ACORN and other non educational organizations. This seems to be an injustice similar to one pointed out by an earlier person's comment. That Joes was taking money from the licensed plumbers playing by the rules. The way this local charity handled the educational grant from a national organization seemed to do the same thing.
It took the money from the schools and teachers that should have been able to use it for educational purposes and gave it to ACORN and other questionable organizations that actually gave it to noneducational things. I guess that is why the local charity directed by Obama did not produce any positive educational results with the $100 million or more funds it received from the National benefactor and other givers.
Please use your expertise to looking into this situation. I do not feel there has been diligent effort in investigating this situation. You seem to have the skill to really get the job done.
I am also sorry that Obama was asked such a difficult and trick question. We should allow the MSM to handle asking questions to him. They do that really well. I would recommend Obama screen the neighborhoods he goes into. This one seemed to be really rough, it may even be middle class.

Also... Toledo has no legal standing concerning licensing as far as the rest of the county is concerned. Outside Toledo, state or county regulation controls. Joe and his employer are not based in Toledo. And Joe lives in Lucas county.
The Toledo board folks are complaining he hasn't brought his apprencticeship to a close. But it doesn't look like he's passed the time limit. Of course he could just pay off the union and get it.. but then that would be illegal.

Check the math. IF Joe the plumber actually owned a business that made $270,000 annual profit, he would pay an extra $600 per year in taxes under Obama's plan. That's right, Joe would have an additional $50 per month deducted from his $22,500 monthly paycheck than he would pay today. As far as I am concerned, anybody who makes $270,000 per year can afford to pay $50 more in taxes each month. It is insane to claim that this would somehow prevent him from purchasing or operating a business.
It's not what Joe said or who Joe is BUT it is all about what Obama said...."spread the wealth."

That simply means creating a situation where more people are "wealthy" or able to accumulate wealth (i.e. "the American dream"). You dimwits are confusing this with the socialist concept of "REDISTRIBUTION of wealth," which means taking wealth away from those who have already accumulated it and dividing it among those who haven't. What Obama is proposing is simply making tax laws fairer such that the wealthy, who have under Republican rule, already enjoyed disproportionate tax cuts, pay their fair proportionate share and that the middle class, who have been paying a disproportionate share, now get a break. It's amusing how righties constantly decry intellectual "elitism" but have no problem with social and economic elitism. It's okay to be dumb so long as you're also rich and don't want anyone else to be. The irony is that the true conservative elite (i.e. the Wm. F.
