BOWLING GREEN, OH - Sarah Palin joined her running mate's attacks against Barack Obama and the media Wednesday, suggesting the Los Angeles Times is withholding a videotape that shows Obama watching as a former Palestinian Liberation Organization spokesman bashed Israel.
Palin departed from her stump speech to talk about Obama's "assortment of friends from Chicago." She described Rashid Khalidi, the former PLO spokesman, as "another radical professor from the neighborhood who spent a lot of time with Barack Obama going back several years." She said Obama was at a party for Khalidi in 2003, when he described Israel as the perpetrator of terrorism.
But she saved her hardest criticism for the newspaper that currently holds the tape, saying they was refusing to release it to aid Obama.
"It must be nice for a candidate to have major news organizations looking after his best interests like that," Palin said. "In this case, we have a newspaper willing to throw aside even the public's right to know in order to protect a candidate that its own editorial board has endorsed. And if there's a Pulitzer Prize category for excelling in cow-towing, then the L.A. Times, you're winning."
Palin's comments echoed criticism John McCain has voiced in recent days. The Los Angeles Times has said they are not producing the tape because it was given to the newspaper with the condition that it not be released. But the paper documented the substance on the tape in an April 2008 article.
The Alaska governor said the newspaper could restore its credibility by producing the tape.
After the jump, Joe the Plumber makes an appearance on the stump with Palin.
A surprise appearance from "Joe the Plumber" got the Bowling Green State University crowd the most excited.
"He's a fellow Alaskan, and he's a fellow military man who has served our country proudly," she said. "I'd like you to meet him. Please welcome Joe the Plumber!"
Joe Wurzelbacher was introduced as a special guest midway through Palin's speech, to a roaring ovation. A day after he campaigned on his own - and received criticism for agreeing with comments suggesting Obama's election would mean "death to Israel" - Wurzelbacher stood silently by Palin's side through the rest of her remarks, dressed in jeans and a checkered work shirt.
"All the pictures I've seen of him, I knew I'd like him, wearing his Carhartts and steel-toed boots," she said.
Wurzelbacher, who was never introduced by his real name, served as a prop to Palin's continued critique of Obama's tax plans. She suggested Obama would raise taxes on small businesses, stifling growth and making it more difficult for small outfits to hire new people and create jobs.
Palin said voters identify with Wurzelbacher, who asked Obama a question at his tax plan at a rally earlier this month. He officially endorsed McCain earlier this week.
"So Joe merely asked our opponent a simple, straightforward question, and he spoke for a lot of Americans," she said. "And the Obama campaign did not appreciate that. And since then, they've been investigating and attacking our friend Joe the Plumber."

During the 1990s, while he served as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), McCain distributed several grants to the Palestinian research center co-founded by Khalidi, including one worth half a million dollars.
A 1998 tax filing for the McCain-led group shows a $448,873 grant to Khalidi's Center for Palestine Research and Studies for work in the West Bank. (See grant number 5180, "West Bank: CPRS" on page 14 of this PDF.)
The relationship extends back as far as 1993, when John McCain joined IRI as chairman in January. Foreign Affairs noted in September of that year that IRI had helped fund several extensive studies in Palestine run by Khalidi's group, including over 30 public opinion polls and a study of "sociopolitical attitudes."

New Ethics Complaint Filed Against Palin
The complaint against Governor Palin, alleges Misuse of Official Position: "Gov. Palin attempted to and in fact did use her official position for personal gain by securing unwarranted benefits for her daughters..." All the allegations contained in the complaint are related to state reimbursed travel.
The complaint was filed by Frank Gwartney, a retired lineman in Anchorage. "Palin ran on the platform of ethics, transparency and anti-corruption. I’m tired of the hypocrisy that exists in Government and people need to know the truth," said Gwartney.
Bristol, Piper and Willow, Palin’s daughters, accrued $32,629 in travel expenses while Palin’s husband Todd raked up $22,174 - all billed to the state for a total of $54,803.00.
"The Governor’s office has expended $54,803.00 in Alaska state dollars for family travel since December 2006," according to the Governor’s Administrative Services Director, Linda Perez. "The documentation related to family travel has changed and you have to keep in mind that the governor and her family are very popular," added Perez.

Okay Steve, I read Jack Cahill's 'analysis. It is based essentially on similarities between Ayer's writing and Obama's writing, which is not really much of a foundation but still. He also asserts that Ayers, having already been published, helped Obama publish his first work because it 'would have been difficult for him to publish it otherwise.' Not particularly convincing either. Another compelling reason is Cahill's assertion that only someone who has worked on a boat would know the word 'ballast.' Ayers apparently was some kind of sailor and Obama, as we all know was in terrorist training school in Indonesia and then reciting the Quran in Chicago and never went on a boat. I was never in the navy or any marine employment either but I do know what ballast is.
Essentially, this accusation is as unabased as the book Obamanation. The idea was simply to spew filth about Obama without putting forth any facts and, most importantly, footnotes that prove those facts. Nobody took the accusations seriously when they came out and as a result, the lack of interest was predictably blamed on the 'liberal media bias' that didn't want to face up to 'facts' against their beloved Obama.
Please don't embarrasss Americans by your love of blind assertion a la Fox. It is not becoming and frankly, a point of ridicule for thinking people throughout the world.

Maybe it’s because Palin lives in a closet. I teach at a university and I'm proud that there are people there with radically different views then my own. I consider myself a moderate, but there are people far to left and far to right of my own ideology. I listen; I attend their lecture and critique their points of view. The world of academia is full of people with diverse ideas that are radically opposed to each other which is inevitability is the bases for our own intellectual development. You would have thought Palin would have learned that while college hopping. But I guess her ignorance is only suppressed by her lack curiosity. Hmm, I guess that’s why she didn’t get a passport until last year. While we need to repel the ideas that run counter to the American spirit, I think need to understand them. After all it was a lack of understanding and information that left us under prepared for two wars we face today.

The founder of the Alaska Independence Party -- a group that has been courted over the years by Sarah Palin, and one her husband was a member of for roughly seven years -- once professed his "hatred for the American government" and cursed the American flag as a "damn flag."
The AIP founder, Joe Vogler, made the comments in 1991, in an interview that's now housed at the Oral History Program in the Rasmuson Library at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.
"The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government," Vogler said in the interview, in which he talked extensively about his desire for Alaskan secession, the key goal of the AIP.
"And I won't be buried under their damn flag," Vogler continued in the interview, which also touched on his disappointment with the American judicial system. "I'll be buried in Dawson. And when Alaska is an independent nation they can bring my bones home."
At another point, Volger advocated renouncing allegiance to the United States. In the course of denouncing Federal regulation over land, he said:
"And then you get mad. And you say, the hell with them. And you renounce allegiance, and you pledge your efforts, your effects, your honor, your life to Alaska."

Palin has courted the group over the years.
Three years after the controversial interview, in 1994, Palin attended the group's annual convention, according to witnesses who spoke to ABC News' Jake Tapper. The McCain campaign is disputing her presence there, but Tapper found two people to attest to it.
The McCain campaign today produced Palin's voting registration records, and said they proved she was never a member of the party.
But she has repeatedly reached out to the group. The McCain campaign has confirmed she visited the group's 2000 convention, and she addressed its convention this year, as an incumbent governor whose oath of office includes upholding the Constitution of the United States.
Palin's husband, Todd Palin, was a member of the party from 1995-2002 with a brief exception in 2000.
It's worth noting that Vogler isn't just some figure from ancient history. He is still being hailed on AIP's site this year, the same year Palin addressed the group's convention.

I have been wondering over the past week or so what is more damaging to the American way of life; terrorist attacks or movements of states to separate from the union.
Seen through my experience and my knowledge of American history it seems that terrorist action against the United States, while vile and reprehensible, results in a more unified and resolute population willing to sacrifice for the greater good. On the other hand the civil war, which was the last time there was a major push of states to separate from the union, resulted in a divide which still exists to some degree today. If you don't believe that, then tell me why I still see confederate flag license plates and such. This event almost destroyed our nation, which is the ultimate goal of terrorist activity.
For weeks now the McCain campaign has been attempting to smear Obama due to alleged ties to terrorists. These allegations are far reaching and tangential at best. My greatest concern is that I have yet to hear someone mention the absolute fact that every night Sarah Palin sleeps at home, it is beside someone who seeks to break from our union.
If her husband is part of a movement to have Alaska secede from the union, isn't this the closest of personal relationships with an individual who, though not a terrorist, seeks the same end through different means?

On Tues., Oct. 21, Pennsylvania lawyer Philip J. Berg filed two motions in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Berg petitioned US District Court Judge R. Barclay Surrick for a summary judgment in the matter of Berg v Obama.
On Oct. 6, 2008 the Obama Campaign, joined by the Democratic National Committee filed a motion with Judge Surrick to delay discovery and dismiss Berg's lawsuit which was filed with the court on Sept. 15. Also, in the Sept. 15 filing, was a Request for Admission, which Obama and the DNC acknowledged receiving when they filed their motion to dismiss Berg's lawsuit. (Under Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, either party can file the motion [also known as a "request to admit"] in which the petitioner asks the opposing litigant to stipulate that certain known facts in evidence are true. That theoretically helps expedite a trial since, by affirming that certain known facts are true, the court does not have to address those questions during the trial or hearing and, instead, can concentrate on the points of law which are more germane to the case. When a litigant fails to respond to a Request for Admission within 30 days, it is construed to be an admission that the facts under the Request are true.
In his new filing, Berg contends that the Request for Admissions from Obama and the DNC was entered on Sept. 15. Both plaintiffs knew that, under the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, they had 30 days to answer the request. Berg told the court, "They knew the admissions were due. They knew they must object or answer specifically in 30 days. They did noting." Berg further argued that the failure by the plaintiffs to response within the time limit was "damning."
The admissions Berg asserted on Sept. 15, and asked for a request to admit from both Obama and the DNC, included the following stipulations to Sen. Obama::
—Admit you were born in Kenya.
—Admit you are a Kenya "natural born" citizen.
—Admit your foreign birth was registered in Hawaii.
—Admit your father, Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., admitted paternity of you

—Admit your mother's name is Stanley Ann Dunham a/k/a Ann Dunham.
—Admit the COLB [Certificate of Live Birth] posted on the website "FightingSmears.com" is a forgery.

—Admit you were adopted by Lolo Soetoro, M.A., a citizen of Indonesia.
—Admit you were not born in Hawaii.
—Admit you are a citizen of Indonesia.
—Admit you never took the "oath of Allegiance" to regain your US Citizenship status.
—Admit you are not a "natural born" United States citizen.
—Admit your senior campaign staff is aware you are not a "natural born" US citizen.
—Admit the United States Constitution does not allow for a Person to hold the office of president of the United States unless that person is a "natural born" United States Citizen.

I am 100% independent and was undecided till a few weeks ago, I set aside all dumb trashing (who cares if Obama was not the top of his class and I dont give a damn if Palin spends all of McCain's money on a coat) from both sides and listened to what they (candidates) had to say and did a little research on CNN on FOX and on factcheck.org
putting aside any beliefs or ties just satback and analysed and realized that Obama is the best man for the job....next election who knows but for the current one Obama is the man

I find it disturbing that the republicans are stooping yet again to dirty tricks to try and further divide this country. Obama has my vote. This is because his policies make sense in this economy. McCain has yet to explain a lot of his policies and how he expects to fund them. Also, I find it scary that should something happen to him at his old age we will be left with someone who has very little experience. She may be a Governor, but she has yet to prove herself worthy of the VP slot. Division is not a deciding factor and neither is acting like a sore loser.

I have been reading the comments and would like to add my two cents. Anyone involved in any sort of politics in the US has been touched by a radical (as defined by the other party). Republicans will call radicals any liberals (Ayers, Rashid, etc) and Democrats will call radical any conservatives (Limbaugh, etc). Calling Obama an anti american because he associated with Ayers at one point in time is like calling McCain racist for associating in the same party with Helms.
I suggest we stop this non-sense and listen to what they have to offer. You all know that they can not deliver everything they promise and they will not be able to go so radical either way because their own constituents will control them (if needed by kicking them out of office in 2 years).
I WILL vote; and I will vote for Obama. I think he has articulated a better position and he can get a coalition to address our issues. I respect McCain, he was a hero and a symbol for this country but I do not think his time is know. His time has passed, his ideas (as laid out) are wrong and the choices he has made do not help (Female VP choices are abundant among republicans for the choice he made).
To me it is that simple.

It is like pulling teeth to get a copy of my birth certificate. I watched Obama's address to the country last night. What a nice, articulate person he is. He set out his vision of the future and it makes perfect sense. The government needs to realign itself into a more efficient model. Clearly, McCain (and especially Palin)are not up to the task. They are stuck in the 20th century mode of thinking. We can save plenty of money to be used for several worthwhile projects by just cutting out the fat. After all, a conservative 10% savings alone would amount to $300 BILLION. That ain't chump change.

Be careful. Emotions often table the responses. There is an extremist element creeping into right and left politics in the US that doesn't sit well well with the founding fathers. This election is doing what the economy is currently doing - recalibrating the social and cultural norms of Americans, right and left after a decade and a half of turmoil from both sides.
Careful what you wish for; and vote for. The comments from the perceived losing side always reflect what will happen in the future not what is happening at the moment ... because that is what the comments are rebelling against.
If dems win - just remember these disagreements when it comes to understanding WHY we won. Let's not dwell in this before our time but more, bask in the understanding that acceptance of the moderate, and I emphasize 'moderate' right is important to our democracy more than credence for the extremists, of which there are many on this forum.
