Why The Powell Endorsement Matters
Political endorsements matter in as much as they become a multi-day story. And Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama had the potential to be a reliable two-day story for the Democrat, a plus, of course, given that there are just 16 days remaining in the contest. But Powell went several steps further than a simple endorsement, and in so doing he not only conveyed to Obama his valued seal of approval as one of the nation's most respected military and foreign policy minds, he picked apart John McCain's case for his candidacy and denounced the Republican nominee's approach to winning the presidential contest.
Here's how:
-- He affirmed the Obama campaign line that McCain has been erratic in his response to the nation's economic crisis.
Powell: "In the case of Mr. McCain, I found that he was a little unsure as to deal with the economic problems that we were having and almost every day there was a different approach to the problem. And that concerned me, sensing that he didn't have a complete grasp of the economic problems that we had."
-- He said the American people aren't interested in negative politics, and he questioned McCain's use of Bill Ayers and related robocalls.
Powell: "And I've also been disappointed, frankly, by some of the approaches that Senator McCain has taken recently, or his campaign ads, on issues that are not really central to the problems that the American people are worried about. This Bill Ayers situation that's been going on for weeks became something of a central point of the campaign. But Mr. McCain says that he's a washed-out terrorist. Well, then, why do we keep talking about him? And why do we have these robocalls going on around the country trying to suggest that, because of this very, very limited relationship that Senator Obama has had with Mr. Ayers, somehow, Mr. Obama is tainted. What they're trying to connect him to is some kind of terrorist feelings. And I think that's inappropriate. Now, I understand what politics is all about. I know how you can go after one another, and that's good. But I think this goes too far. And I think it has made the McCain campaign look a little narrow. It's not what the American people are looking for. And I look at these kinds of approaches to the campaign and they trouble me."
-- He criticized not just the suggestion by some Republicans that Obama is a Muslim but also the broader implication of using religion to divide.
Powell: "He is not a Muslim, he's a Christian. He's always been a Christian. But the really right answer is, what if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer's no, that's not America. Is there something wrong with some seven-year-old Muslim-American kid believing that he or she could be president? Yet, I have heard senior members of my own party drop the suggestion, 'He's a Muslim and he might be associated terrorists.' This is not the way we should be doing it in America."
-- He criticized McCain's pick of Sarah Palin and praised Obama's selection of Joe Biden as deliberate.
Powell: "And I was also concerned at the selection of Governor Palin. She's a very distinguished woman, and she's to be admired; but at the same time, now that we have had a chance to watch her for some seven weeks, I don't believe she's ready to be president of the United States, which is the job of the vice president. And so that raised some question in my mind as to the judgment that Senator McCain made. On the Obama side, I watched Mr. Obama and I watched him during this seven-week period. And he displayed a steadiness, an intellectual curiosity, a depth of knowledge and an approach to looking at problems like this and picking a vice president that, I think, is ready to be president on day one."
-- He concludes that Obama is indeed a "transformational" figure and calls for a generational change in leadership, sanctioning the Democrat's experience and credentials.
Powell: "So, when I look at all of this and I think back to my Army career, we've got two individuals, either one of them could be a good president. But which is the president that we need now? Which is the individual that serves the needs of the nation for the next period of time? And I come to the conclusion that because of his ability to inspire, because of the inclusive nature of his campaign, because he is reaching out all across America, because of who he is and his rhetorical abilities--and we have to take that into account--as well as his substance--he has both style and substance--he has met the standard of being a successful president, being an exceptional president. I think he is a transformational figure. He is a new generation coming into the world-- onto the world stage, onto the American stage, and for that reason I'll be voting for Senator Barack Obama."
Powell discounts the chief arguments McCain has made for his candidacy and against Obama's. He said he won't stump for the Democratic nominee, but he doesn't have to. His words will resonate -- and likely show up in ads running in battleground states -- until Nov. 4 and could go far in helping Obama woo moderate voters in the waning days of the race.
There is nothing McCain can say or do to diminish the power of Powell's words without knocking the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs. And that would only prove Powell's point, wouldn't it?

And so is SILLY SARAH (Palin). OsiSpeaks.com

My regard for powell absolutely peaked when powell bravely stood up at the UN with cartoon pictures and a vile full of baby powder. What a brave man. What an honest, brave man...
And don't tell me that now after 18 months the "liberal media" is running out of fake positive spin for obama? I mean without powell we'd get what? More video of obama 'modeling' jeans for the press on his plane?
I agree with this article in that this is not only a clear 2-3 day news cycle victory for Obama, but the biggest boost for Obama will be in taking these extensive, substantive, and by all estimates FAIR comments on the road for the remainder of the campaign.
I am still buzzing from the comprehensive case that Powell made. It is most impressive in that it was a thorough, convincing analysis.
The best point, for me, was the decisive/deadly blow on McCain's latest tactic of calling Obama a socialist. It's an absurd charge on its face, but now there is absolutely no way that McCain can sustain this baseless attack after being called a Demagogue by a key member of his own party. That's gotta sting.
He is right re: taxes. It IS patriotic and a necessary evil for us to pay taxes. If Joe the Plumber really is making $250k or more, then it's time for Joe the Plumber to step up and help this Country when it's in a financial crisis and two wars.
I'm not sure that Sen. Obama should be celebrating this. Powell endorsed and gave legitimacy to the worst presidency in history. He staked his good name in front of the U.N. -- and lost. He has no credibility having pushed for the Iraq War.
Two huge judgment mistakes -- endorsing Bush and making the case for the war in front of the U.N. -- are devastating to the former Secretary of State's credibility.
I have always held Colin Powell in high regard. Always had a great deal of respect for him. But if he truly supported Obama, he should have made his declaration 2 months ago - not 2 weeks before the election. What's he been waiting for?? Oh, wait, it's the perfect time to play manipulative political games and he's right up there with the rest of them now. Powell's involvement in the Iraq war and his previous conservative stances are in direct contradiction with Obama's stances and policies. But now, suddenly Colin is in line with Obama? Please. I guess they can be the flip-flop duo since they seem to be a matched set. And he's not going to stump for the Dems? Wow, that's big of him. He'll just use his name and political stature to swoop in like a seagull, crap on McCain and then fly away.
What a big surprise. From a man that accomplished very little as Secretary of State.
Enough of the negativity. Colin Powell is a distinguished figure who proudly served as Secretary of State let alone the military. Does anyone see that a BLACK WOMAN replaced him. Get a grip WHETHER YOU AGREE OR DISAGREE..... BLACKS ARE EDUCATED PEOPLE TOO... As I post this message I too am a highly educated BLACK person and a VETERAN. I am amazed at the level of INTELLIGENCE in some of these posting. WE NEED A DIFFERENT DIRECTION IN THIS COUNTRY!!!!! BY GOD GIVE BLACKS A CHANCE...... WE DID NOT HURT ANYONE THEN!!!! SO WHY WOULD WE HURT ANYONE NOW......
I think this *should* be a big deal, and that it *would* be if the news shows played more than the briefest snippets of Powell's appearance. But in reality, they'll only play a few sound bites and this will be a one-day story. I'd be surprised if this got more than the briefest of mentions on the evening news shows tomorrow. And on the local news programs? I'll be surprised if it's mentioned at all after tomorrow morning.
In any case, no one will play *all* the clips mentioned in this post, and thus the endorsement won't serve to "reinforce" anything about the Obama message.
The National Journal and a couple other online sources might run stories covering the endorsement in depth. I'm dubious that the rest of the news media is so enlightened ;-)
Looking at the elections from a world standpoint: my God I hope we do get Obama for president. We absolutely need some fresh air and new blood after 8 years of ....well can't really define what it was for USA and the whole world but total disaster.
No, John Mccain is NOT in deep political doo doo because of Powell's endorsement as one misled, shortsighted on this column said. The decision of a political figure such as Powell to support Obama will have no influence on those already voting for Mccain. I just posted, Sorry about the publication of my letter three times, This was a computer error. I stick by ereything I said in my letter, though.
Last time I checked, George W. used cocaine and has a DUI and still ended up being the Republican standard bearer. Thats all I am going to say regarding the previous ignorant post.

Jane, you try to paint Obama as a tainted person with thin evidence of guilt by association, but you never mention McCain's trying to subvert the law on behalf of Charles Keating who is a convicted felon, you never mention Gorgon P. Liddy, you never mention McCain's invitation to Joe Bonanno's (head of the mob) birthday party. All of these are real and much more damaging than Obama sitting on the board of a republican initiated non profit organization with a man that committed a crime when he was 8 years old. I wonder is there is another reason for your bias against a man who in fact has little that can his enemies can dig up on him. And there is more on McCain but it would take a book.
Let me say that I never liked Powell and I always believed his role in the Bush administration and the war was unfortunate.
Still I'm impressed by Powell's logical and comprehensive analysis of both candidate's campaigns, their strenghtes and weaknesses.
Powell basically sums up the problems I personaly have with the republican party and Mccain.
Mccain and his party simply overstepped the line when they associated Obama with islam and islam with terrorism.
Nonsense like this is against everything this nation stands for! Has Mccain ever read the Decleration of Independence??
It is sad to say but my respect for Powell was diminished by his endorsement of a socialist candidate. Not once did I think Powell would publicly cross from being a conservative to a socialist by endorsing the most socialist candidate since FDR, LBJ, and Carter, but here we are. I would have held much more respect had he refused to endorse either candidate, for neither candidate is a good candidate, but to endorse a socialist is beyond reason.
Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama doesn't mean much to this registered Independent voter. It's just one black man voting for another black man. If Obama gets in, get ready to become the USSA.

Nobody ever questions motive for any White men supporting Mccain, obviously we understand that has nothing to do him being White. But we are quick to suggest any Black man supporting Obama has everything to do him being Black. It is not only very disrespectful to Obama, it is disrespectful to Black, White and any human beings. Obama,to his credit, never ran as a Black candidate, he never played any race card but it is McCain and his campaign playing it, this is why we hear Powell's endorsement is just about his race. Well, if we have an open mind we would see why Powell endorsed Obama, not McCain. He explained his deliberation process and decision very thorouh and simplistic way. All these talks discounting Obama and his candidacy, calling Powell's support as racially motivated, we are just proving the very point Mr. Powell made, so if these negative and disrespectful attitude turns someone strong Republican like Powell off, it sure can turn many people off. There are number of a few White Republican supporting Obama, Christopher Buckley is one of them, I wonder if this support is for Obama's half White race. What else it could be, right?

Question for Reppublicans...
For those of you that voted for Bush (twice). Do you ever question your judgement? He had lead us into two wars, decimated the economy and had now advanced the most socialist acts in US history.
The Bush campaingn fed you all horse crp in 2000 and 2004 and you bought it? The McCain campaign is doing the same--why are you biting AGAIN!!!
So I guess that the message of the week for the McCain folks is socialism!
Good luck with getting that to stick. Desperation, anyone?
Hannah,
If you don't think Obama is a socialist, please reread his website. Then for grins figure out how someone Why someone making $20,000 deserves a 500 reduction in social security taxes? Because that the majority of the taxes they pay.......
Nobody ever questions motive for any White men supporting Mccain

Wow! Here on planet earth 'racists are voting for mccain' has been a topic of plenty of news articles. We went through the same tactics during the primaries. 'racists are voting for Hillary.' Really disgusting. Which planet are you from... it's sounds much nicer than my planet.
Fair enough, I guess I haven't made my point clear. Let's try it again, when Joe Liberman offered his support to Mccain, did anybody question about his motive to support McCain that he is just supporting another White man? I don't quite remember hearing this argument ever and fair to say I am a political junky and watch Fox to MSNBC, listen to Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage,Howie Carr. I am no democrat or republican, I try to listen to all sides and then decide for myself. I used to like McCain when he was running against George Bush, in every aspect I thought he would have been a better president than Bush. But Republican party didn't like McCain enough then, they didn't want to have any part of his straight talk and nominated Bush. Bush ran a brutal campaign against him based on lies. And we elected Mr.Bush not once, twice!!!!After 8 years, McCain is doing exactly what Bush had done to him. Now that McCain reduced himself to Bush dirty level politics, Republicans are behind him. He shifted his positions for political gains and lost some of his maverick charm, I liked him when he was the real deal, but now he seems to me all talk. He doe not have any clear message, he is saying whatever might work and whatever might get him elected. Let see if it works! To Hadenough, I am really from a nicer planet, all these negative campaigning make me sick.
Just proves that with the black community, being African is more important than being American. Hold onto your wallets folks, we are facing the biggest welfare state in the world. And for who? Those that refuse to join the workforce and contribute anything to this country.
Watch out!! General Powell.. Republican will start attacking you, and you will be trashed... They will say you like socialism and you are probably an communist. In these days, republican party can say anything, spread any lie just want to get the vote. Remembere our national is in trouble, with 10+ trillions in debt and keep growing, and half of these debt is contributed by Bush alone. Can you stil trust republican party to run the economy?
From reading some of these posts, it is quite clear to me. Racism is alive and well in the US. Comparing Obama to Hitler is so wild. I wonder if you had to remove your tin foil hat to write this?
Yeah, I saw this coming. "He only supports him because he is black." What a sad racist way to view the world. The people that believe this to be true need to leave the country. Maybe let Palin's hubby and his cronies go ahead and secede from the union. Alaska can become the home of the ignorant and land of the racist. All you folks can move to Alaska! Please. Do us all a favor. Bunch of idiots have no idea what being a true American means.

Alright, two can play that game:
John McCain's associations: Charles Keating (banking scandal); Gordon Libby (watergate); Richard Quinn (white supremacist; election fraud); Pastor Hagee (anti-semitic evangelicist).
So, by the logic the Rs are using against Obama, McCain helped orchestrate the Wall Street collapse, is illegally spying on/tampering with Obama's campaign, thinks doing so is entirely legal, is not a crook, hates anything non-aryan and probably belongs in the KKK (while it's wrong for blacks to be racist, i.e., Jeremiah Wright, apparently it's ok for whites to be so), is actively defrauding voters, and hates Israel and anything not protestant ... not the type of person I want to be president.
Now, obviously none of that's patently true, yet Rs insist that Obama is guilty by association. Well, if he is, then McCain is right there with him.
And, for everyone calling Obama socialist/communist. Please research what socialism/communism actually is, and then take a look at Obama's platform. Maybe then you'll realize just how ignorant these socialism charges truly are. Funny thing is, McCain supported nationalizing banks, and yet he's calling Obama socialist.

This election has me very worried. So many things to consider. About a year ago I would have voted for Obama. I have changed my mind three times since then.
I watch all the news channels, jumping from one to another. I must say this drives my husband crazy. But, I feel if you view MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News, you might get some middle ground to work with. About six months ago, I started thinking 'where did the money come from for Obama'. I have four daughters who went to College, and we were middle class, and money was tight. We (includingmy girls), worked hard, and there were lots of student loans.
I started looking into Obama's life:
Around 1979 Obama started college at Occidental in California . He is very open about his two years at Occidental, he tried all kinds of drugs and was wasting his time but, even though he had a brilliant mind, did not apply himself to his studies. 'Barry' (that was the name he used all his life) during this time, had two roommates, Muhammad Hasan Chandoo, and Wahid Hamid, both from Pakistan .
During the summer of 1981, after his second year in college, he made a 'round the world' trip. Stopping to see his mother in Indonesia , next Hyderabad in India , three weeks in Karachi , Pakistan , where he stayed with his roommate's family, then off to Africa to visit his father's family. My question – Where did he get the money for this trip? Neither I, nor any one of my children, would have had money for a trip like this when they were in college. When he came back, he started school at Columbia University in New York . (It is at this time he wants everyone to call him Barack - not Barry). Do you know what the tuition is at Columbia ? It's not cheap, to say the least. Where did he get money for tuition? Student Loans? Maybe.
After Columbia , he went to Chicago to work as a Community Organizer for $12,000 a year. Why Chicago ? Why not New York ? He was already living in New York .
By 'chance', he met Antoin 'Tony' Rezko, born in Aleppo Syria , and a real estate developer in Chicago . Rezko has been convicted of fraud and bribery only this year. Rezko, was named 'Entrepreneur of the Decade' by the Arab-American Business and Professional Association. About two years later, Obama entered Harvard Law School . Do you have any idea what tuition is for Harvard Law School? Where did he get the money for Law School ? More student loans?
After Law school, he went back to Chicago . Rezko offered him a job, which he turned down. But, he did take a job with Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland. Guess what? They represented 'Rezar' which is Rezko's firm. Rezko was one of Obama's first major financial contributors when he ran for office in Chicago .
In 2003, Rezko threw an early fundraiser for Obama, which (Chicago Tribune reporter) David Mendelland claims was instrumental in providing Obama with 'seed money' for his U.S. Senate race. In 2005, Obama purchased a new home in the Kenwoood District of Chicago for $1.65 million (less than asking price). With ALL those Student Loans - Where did he get the money for the property? On the same day, Rezko's wife, Rita, purchased the adjoining empty lot for full price. The London Times reported that Nadhmi Auchi, an Iraqi-born Billionaire, loaned Rezko $3.5 million, three weeks before Obama's new home was purchased. Obama met Nadhmi Auchi many times with Rezko.
Now, we have Obama running for President. Valerie Jarrett, was Michele Obama's boss. She is now Obama's chief advisor, and he does not make any major decisions without talking to her first. Where was Jarrett born? Ready for this? Shiraz , Iran ! Do we see a pattern here? Or am I going crazy?
On May 10, 2008, The Times reported, Robert Malley, advisor to Obama was 'sacked', after the press found out he was having regular contacts with 'Hamas', which controls Gaza and is connected with Iran . This past week, buried in the back part of the papers, Iraqi newspapers reported that during Obama's visit to Iraq , he asked their leaders to do nothing about the war until after he is elected, and he will 'Take care of things'.
Oh, and by the way, remember the college roommates that were born in Pakistan ? They are in charge of all those 'small' Internet campaign contributions for Obama. Where is that money coming from? The poor and middle class in this country? Or could it be from the Middle East ?
And the final bit of news. On September 7, 2008, The Washington Times posted a verbal slip that was made on 'This Week' with George Stephanapoulos. Obama on talking about his religion, and said, 'My Muslim faith'. When questioned, 'he made a mistake'. Some mistake!
All of the above information I got on line. If you would like to check it;
Wikipedia, encyclopedia, Barack Obama; Tony Rezko; Valerie Jarrett: Daily Times - Obama visited Pakistan in 1981; The Washington Times - September 7, 2008; The Times May 10, 2008.
Now the BIG question - If I found out all this information on my own, Why haven't all of our 'intelligent' members of the press been reporting this?
A phrase that keeps ringing in my ear - 'Beware of the enemy from within'!!!
I strongly believe racism is alive within the baby boomer generation which I can understand but that is on both sides. There is always two sides to a coin. However, those from 18 to 40 instills very little racism and you will see record numbers coming out to vote. Those voters will tip the scale and the next president of the United States will be Barack Obama. I will be voting for Barack and what did it for me is how McCain handled the financial crisis and the absurd attacks on Obama's character. I guess if you can't run on issues, this is all you have. Obama Biden 08.
Let's talk about "Black Racism"; always ignored by the left. Fact: even sugesting that you'd vote for the "white guy" would get an Africian American shot dead in Detriot. Oh but that's right, you couldn't be a racist is you're black.
America is the most racist country! The good thing is that black, white or hispanic; race hatred is an equal opportunity sickness.
Jane--- that is one of the most idiotic post I've ever read---- Nov. 4th be prepared to embrace your new president. Barack Obama

Jane....
U are the reason why this country needs comprehensive change for the better.
Your mental process is pre-historic and assinine.
The only good thing about you and people like you is that one day you will all die and your mental retardation will die with you..
That day should be today.
SCARED....
YOU TALK TOO MUCH.. IN OTHER WORDS, YOU HAVE A SEROIUS CASE OF VERBAL DIARRHEA...
GO JUICE YOUR FATHER AND SWALLOW.....
Racism is truly alive and well..Im only 26 yrs old, im am seeing some of what my grandparents have talked abt. hatred against blacks because of their skin color is so ignorant. Im am proud to be an african american living in what i think is a great country, but it also makes me sad to see people hate you because of your skin color. If Obama is elected, i dont white's and blacks coming together no time soon, and that is sad. I live in Tennessee and here in teh work place racism is already surfacing.
"And, for everyone calling Obama socialist/communist. Please research what socialism/communism actually is, and then take a look at Obama's platform. Maybe then you'll realize just how ignorant these socialism charges truly are. Funny thing is, McCain supported nationalizing banks, and yet he's calling Obama socialist." Thank you for pointing this out, Jason. So true. I wonder how many people screaming "socialist" even understand the tenants of socialism. McCain is all smoke and mirrors. He has repeated his lies so many times that he is starting to believe them himself. So disgusting, given how much he cried about his treatment on the 2000 campaign trail.
I read the posts here and am a bit disgusted. Powell hit the nail on the head. The negativity of the McCain campaign is costing the Republicans votes. They are pushing away supporters by bringing nothing to the table but hate and finger-pointing. The amount of venom pouring from the mouths of many Republican voters is appalling. It saddens me to see that many Republicans can not see through the rhetoric and demand better from their candidate and their party.
The McCain campaign isn't offering solutions. The McCain camp isn't talking about what they are going to do for the country. They aren't talking about the merits of their plan--because they don't have one.
Instead, they keep telling us what Obama can't do for the country. Once they pulled out the 'socialism' card and started down that path--they've not only lost my vote, they've lost my respect.
I hope the Republican party does some serious soul searching in the next couple of years. The Republicans need to start thinking about what they stand for. It's easy to sit back and shoot holes in a plan, it's much harder to lead and propose solutions to problems.
We need people willing to lead and solve problems, not play attack dog. Barack Obama seems to be the only candidate interested in proposing solutions. If the Republicans want to remain relevant in the years to come they need to start giving the voters something to vote for.
I want to extend a personal thanks to the Republican party and especially to George W. Bush for dividing Americans so wonderfully. I am not a "leftist" or a "liberal." I am not a "conservative" or "Red" or "Blue." I believe in freedom for everyone in America. I believe in "We The People." I believe in working hard and paying my bills. I believe that peace is what we should strive for. This is what I BELIEVE. What I KNOW is that my family of six, with soon to be three kids in college, cannot take four more years of what the past eight has given us. We, my family and I, are America. We will take four years of Obama, even if it is "risky." Smith Mass is right. November 4th will mark the beginning of the end of this madness of lies, torture, deceit and corporate greed over the will of "We The People."
-a former Republican.
Can you say "what's in it for me" ? When Powell made his announcement Sunday, he had a short list of issues that he reviewed that sounded almost identical to those Obama has been using the past few days. This is all about getting a job in the next White House - assuming Obama is elected. Powell had no real hope getting there again with republicans. A job, power and prestige trump ideology ( or color ) everytime.
Now Rick Davis is "blaming" Rep Lewis for making them "rethink" playing the race card by bringing up Rev Wright for the last two weeks.
IT STINKS, PEOPLE.
We are in big Trouble
I read so many post about this election. If Barack name was Joe Smith and he was white, this would all be a non-issue. Chew on this
.If a man can raise 150 million in one month, that is the person I want in office. Maybe he can do something about our buget.
.If a man is "hanging" around with terroist, maybe we won't get jacked up again. Strange we forget about Timothy McVey ( who was white in case your forgot).
.If you think that you don't need to pay more taxes and you make 250K a year, you are selfish and self-centered. You should be living within your means anyway.
. What the heck is so wrong about spreading the wealth, I swear that Bible looks as that as a good thing.
.Fact: Obama was born in Hawaii, fact he not BLACK, he is mixed. I know some of you have a hard time wrapping your brain around that, but he is mixed, you know like oreo's, which I am sure you are stuffing your face with.
.Fact: Not all Blacks side with their own race.
.Fact: Hey some of them will even vote for McCain.
.Fact: I considered McCain, then he got Barbie for a dang VP, are you kidding, out of all the women to choose from..HER. and when the heck did she become a dang rolemodel to women. ewwwwwwwwwwww gross.
.Fact: McCain would have really messed you Obama haters up, if he had gotten a black VP. That would have been funny. Oh my gosh you would have lost your mind.
.Fact: For all of you racist out there, frighten to think that you might reap what you sow. Trust me, Obama doesn't have the time to deal with you, believe it or not you are beneath him.
Fact: They are both politicians, and both of them are feeding ya horsecrap.
Fact: Bush messed up so bad the public is strongly considering putting a man of mixed race into office. You Obama haters need to be mad at Bush.
Fact: This county lives on racism and classim. Can you imagine if all those who weren't like you disappered, my gosh what would you do with all your free time. What would you do with all the hate you have filling your body. Your head would probably exploded.
Fact: I am voting Obama, why cause he the better candidate, why because he don't look like a fool during the debates and losing it. Why, because he just might bring about change.
I mean look at it this way, if he fails, hey you all can say see what happens when you put a "those people" in office, that way it would never happen again. Either way it will happen, if not today, eventually. So get it over with.
Finally why am I voting for him, because McCain is near deaths door ( I mean my God he looks like he could drop-dead at any mintue) and there is no way in hell I want her running this county. Besides believe this, if that were happen, the good ole boys network, would have a freaking field day with her.
Jane,
You may choose not to believe that W snorted coke. But just because you don't believe it doesn't mean that it didn't happen.
That is how the Republicans won the last eight years. If you don't say anything long enough it goes away and therefore never happened. Well, it did happen. I was there on more than one occasion. Seeing is believing.
To all you nutjobs who are calling Obama a socialist... I want you guys to stand up make the following statements:
1) I am against giving rural Americans farming subsidies. If they can't afford to live based solely off their crops.. so be it.. they should lose their farms.
2) I am against Medicare. If old people can't afford medical treatments through conventional insurance alone.. too bad.. let them die.
3) I am against public schools. If you can't afford to send your kids to a private schools, then your kids don't deserve to be educated.
4) I am against Social Security. If you don't have a nest egg for yourself, sorry gramps.. you better keep working until you die.
When you can stand up and say those things with a straight face and mean it.. then I will accept your claim that you are truly against anything having to do with socialism. The thing that amazes me the most is that the people who are only surviving in this country because of the socialist principles that are entwined within our capitalist system, are the first to scream that they oppose socialism. The so called "latte sippin liberals", the ones that stand to lose the most... are the ones saying that we need to help each other to make this country great.
Interesting. In addition to the article itself, the first 7 comments generally relate to Powell's political career (history), the value/benefit of the endorsement, the political-ness of the timing of the endorsement and the negativity Powell displayed towards McCain. NOWHERE in any of the comments is there a hint of racism or fear of black people or anything to do with the color of anyone's skin. The ONLY person to inject those issues into a relatively mild discussion at that point was the "highly educated BLACK person and a VETERAN". And quite vehemently and angrily if the CAPS and exclamations points are any indication. It is reflective of someone projecting the chip on their shoulder into a discussion where it is not warranted. While I view Powell's late endorsement of Obama as more of a political stunt and beneath the high quality person that he is, it has NOTHING to do with the color of his skin. I don't care about the color of anyone's skin: not Powell's, not Obama's and not McCain's.
I'm an endangered species: a moderate democrat. The reasons I'm not voting for Obama are because he's inexperienced, too liberal and has fairly standard tax and spend policies. While he is very eloquent and well spoken, he uses a lot of words to talk around a subject because he wants everyone to like what he's saying. Because he's inexperienced and doesn't want to be wrong, he's indecisive at times - like when Russia invaded Georgia. Inexperience is also the reason he chose Biden - a 35 year insider - as his V.P.. Because he wants to win, he changes his stances and reverses his decisions to benefit himself - hardly a novelty in politics.
I totally disagree with Colin Powell. He now represents exactly what was expected of him and others who feel the time for one of their own is now. Many have said it is not about the color of skin or race. As much as we would like to believe that, it reminds me too much of when Mayor Tom Bradley of Los Angeles ran for Governor of California. When interviewed, many white people were in support of Bradley, not because they felt he was qualified to run a state like California but rather because whites did not want to appear as being racist towards a black politician. When the final days of the election neared many of the white population that had announced they would support Bradley denounced their decision when they went to the poles. Many of the pollsters had predicted that Bradley would overwhelmingly win this position. Some of the media went as far as to announce that Mayor Bradley need not worry as the Governor's mansion was rolling out the red carpet for him. He lost by 100,000 votes. This was not the first time that this country was faced with pre-election, crystal-ball predictions. Years ago, Doug Wilder, another black American politician was favored in many of the poles with a nine point spread. Ultimately he lost the election by considerable numbers. These two-dollar psychic predictions have been amplified many times over in our election history. Experience is the key for the American people. Unfortunately McCain has a harder climb, not because of his lack of experience, but rather due to his guilt by association with the Bush administration. I, like many people, could not care less what color a candidate happens to be. Obama has, many times, displayed his inexperience and I won’t go on about this to bring my point home. Biden is a couch politician. Whether Obama wins or not has very little to do with his sincere concerns for this nation. From his 7000 square foot home on the lake, he will continue to work in the Senate and build his guaranteed nest egg that allows him to comfortably spread the American wealth.
