Brownstein On The Palin Dilemma

Sarah Palin, who started her post-campaign bid for rehabilitation with a series of high profile interviews this week, emerged from the 2008 election in an even more politically damaged condition than previously understood, new data show.

In the national Election Day exit poll, fully 60% of voters said they did not consider her qualified to serve as president if necessary, while only 38% thought she would be ready to step in. Those figures were daunting enough, but new calculations from the exit poll provided by the NBC News political unit show that outside of the Republican base skepticism about Palin’s credentials reached even more imposing heights. While 74% of Republicans thought Palin was qualified, just 35% of independents and 9% of Democrats agreed, the figures (first aired on David Gregory’s 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Monday night) showed.

And while 40% of voters without college education thought she could step in, just 35% of college graduates agreed. Fully 63% of college graduates rated her unqualified.

Likewise, while Palin scored relatively better in the South-45% of southerners thought she was qualified, and 53% did not-she faced towering levels of resistance in the east and west (where voters by more than two-to-one in each case considered her unqualified.) The Midwest tracked the national numbers, with two-fifths calling her qualified, and three-fifths not.

The same pattern was evident by location: Palin ran best among rural voters (45% qualified, 53% not), but sagged among suburbanites (40% yes, 59% no) and collapsed among urban residents (just 30% qualified, 67% not).

In all, the figures underscore the dilemma Palin presents for the GOP: while quite popular among the party base, she faces deep resistance from voters outside of it, including many of the groups (independents, college graduates, residents of the coasts) who turned most sharply away from the GOP in last week’s rout.

She is the object, not the subject, of ambitions more odious than her own honest grubbing for office through painting by the numbers of the previous election. I refer to the ambitions of her right-wing hagiographers, led by Kristol, Krauthammer and Gerson, to sustain the nasty triviality of our politics; and of the manifestly erratic opportunist who chose her with equally open contempt for this nation. It is truly silly to focus on her inadequacies, when malice matured a much sharper edge in the consciences of partisan poseurs who procured her recent embarrassment.

If the GOP persists in its delusion that Sarah Palin is its future, it is creating its own extinction as a political party.

Will this woman ever SHUT UP ? Does she NOT know that LESS is more sometimes ? The more she opens her mouth, the more she shows her delusional character. Perhaps yes, the campaign aides should let her speak out immediately after the convention, and more often. Then she would have made a bigger fool of herself and the election loss for GOP would have been FAR WORSE !

The only reason I considered voting for McCain is the fact that Palin was on the ticket. Conservatives stayed home this election. If she runs in 2012, she will be at the top of my list. When the Republicans become conservative again, they will win again.

Stop the Presses!! Democrats take a more critical view of the Republican VP Candidate than Republicans do. What a scoop!

Bottom line: the smear campaign against her worked like a charm. She has at least two years to turn things around. And after seeing her interviews the past couple of days, I'm confident she'll be able to do just that.

Judging from the Palin-deranged comments above, Sarah Palin will be the perfect GOP choice in 2012 because....

1. She'll almost certainly be one of two most popular, and successful, governors in the country (Bobby Jindal of Louisiana will be the other).

2. She now knows how, and how not, to run a national campaign.

3. Obama will *horrors!* actually have to defend his record. Wanna bet that, by 2012, his vapid speechifying won't be so enthralling as it was this time around?

4. Two words: Joe Biden.

PDS'ers take heed: Palin's past may turn out to be prologue. She ran for Lt. Gov. in 2002 and lost in the primary. She ran again for Gov. in 2006 and beat an entrenched GOP incumbent by 8 points. Go ahead and insult Governor Palin if you want, but I've got a sawbuck that says David Axelrod is already staying up nights wondering how in hell he's going to deal with her in 2012, especially if His Majesty's approval numbers start rapidly heading south.

well i guess ed koch was right: the election was won or lost on the topic of abortion. Because Palin was a pro-life candidate was why leftist conservatives like Buckley, Parker et al voted for Obama, as well as why the pro-abortion media went after her and assassinated her record, her intelligence, and her family. It was astonishing to see the lies that were broadcast as truth, EVEN BY CONSERVATIVES, and yet the pro-abortion media looked the other way with Obama. So abortion is now more important than national security, the economy and energy indepenedence? WELL, Obama will screw up all those important concerns, just like Carter and Clinton did before him, AND THE LIBERAL MEDIA WILL IGNORE HIS MISTAKES JUST LIKE THEY DID WITH CARTER & CLINTON (AND LOOK AT WHAT IT GOT US: ANTI-USA IRAN AND AL QAEDA). basically what we have now is Carter/Clinton 2.0.

Palin was MUCH more qualified to lead the USA then Biden and certainly miles ahead of Obama. She was also more conservative then McCain. Those conservatives who voted for Obama or didnt vote at all, you are the most disgusting people i have ever read about. Sure hope you dont complain when Obama ruins this country even more, thanks to your support of him, or lack of support for McCain....and to the liberal religious followers of the obamessiah, get a life. welcome to your nightmare. Give me Bush or McCain, and certainly Plain, over a Obama-Biden presidency any day.

I bet not one of the know-it all posters and pundits can tell me any real thing Sarah did as Governor or Chairman of the Alaska Oil & Gas Conservation Commission. lets start with the Point Thompson gas field , eh. How about her work as Chairman of the interstate Oil & Gas commerce compact. care to tell us which associate international member of the compact had a little shooting war with the big bad bear this summer ? You guys are soo scared of Sarah. As sticker shock and buyers remorse set in she will look better and better to the vast majority of Americans

Obama's experience is what? Two years of how to behave like a Nordstrom's store window dummy while being propped up by a sycophantic history-ignorant media and a sinecuric marxist-daffy academia. That will prove to be the real good stuff, eh?

Palin has the real thing, genuine successful executive experience both in politically elected office and in an appointed public-service position.

Obama has a couple years of quirky, highly partisan, ineffective experience in elected legislative positions where he bugged out of more votes than nearly anyone else.

He has shown one great management ability, though. How to open up huge bags of swag for adorers and those who seek his hand on their shoulder can dump huge washed funds into.

Boss Tweed could learn a great deal.

Sarah Palin actually has a record of legislative success unlike Obama. While she was the most popular Gov in America Obama was a below average US Senator. You fell for empty speeches . Obama has never changed a thing in his career.

Now, in addition to all of the other excesses of umbrage inflicted on nonObamamniacs during the campaign, it appears that BHO will NOT be audited over his campaign contribution debacle. The deceit, the cheating, the sneakiness, the illegality will all go undocumented. McCain on the other hand will be audited, costing him millions. "Guilty as hell. Free as a bird". Why doesn't the Rep party focus on THESE important issues!?

he grubbsi, if palin doesnt have a record, how come you know so much about all the commissions she sat on that did actual GOVERNMENT work, as opposed to obama who simply handed out grant money that to this day no one knows what it has accomplished.

hmmm???

OH and it was Palin who negotiated the gas pipe line with Canada. That will do more good for th USA than ANYTHING Obama will do in his ENTIRE PRESIDENCY.

All obama will do fo the USA and the world is increase the amount of abortions as well as the amount of funds the USA govt pays for them in other countries.

Money on it folks. money on it. Obama will crash and burn and take the whole country with him, right down the sewer which sprung his marxist hide.

cheer up libs, this is YOUR REDEEMER NOT MINE. Enjoy your false little god-child.

Please, please - put Palin at the top of the ticket in 2012!

I have yet to hear her put together a coherent sentence, much less a thought (I know, elitist, yada, yada) and it's clear that she knows nothing about anything.

And yet the true-believer right LOVES her!!! Sel-delusion can't go much further than that.

What's really laughable is that the Republicans already HAVE a vestly more qualified candidate from the religious right in Mike Huckabee - the best public speaker in the party, with a far more substantial record. So why are his natural constituents grasping after Sarah Palin?

The only reason I can see is that she has the ultimate imprimatur - liberals can't stand her.

'I told washington 'thanks but no thanks on that bridge to nowhere'

'I sold the jet on ebay'

'I was cleared of any ethical wrongdoing'

pathological liar. and that's what you want, republicans? speaks volumes.

Hey lu-ee, grubbsi is on your side. If you're going to help Governor Palin's cause, it would help if you didn't come across as, you know, retarded. We already know she has that demographic sewn up.

I think the mainstream media was derelict in it's duties of giving fair and unbiased reports. They truly thought we were stupid enough to believe the excuse that the economy overshadowed everything and that is why they didn't check on little things like Ayers, Wright, Rezko and let us determine if it was irrelevant. You never gave us that choice. You did however have time to cover earth shattering news like Sarah's clothes. Somehow that was more important to cover than Wright or the rest of them. Twenty-two months Newsweek spent with Obama and they could not speak out until after the nomination. They still did not know what he stood for, who he was. He gave some of the reporters creeps. He would watch people watch him. At Harvard, he found it fascinating how he could make people want to do things for him. I think he has honed in on this ability and has manipulated you all.

It was terrifying to see her say she was happy to have been found innocent of abusing her power on the very day the report was released stating that she was guilty of abusing her power.

Someone who lies with such ease is someone who should never have access to high power.

so Mickey what did Palin exaclty do that was so "abusive"? i notice that she was in her rights to remove ANY employee she felt wouldnt support her policies. Will you also criticize obama for "abusing power" when he also lets go of republicans he is allowed to fire? Executives positions in govt are allowed to do those things.

It was real nice how the alaskan legislature was trying to be impartial until obama sent operatives to Alaska to make the whole investigate into a political hit job, biased and full of lies. it was great that a later non-partisan review proved her completely INNOCENT. more than we can say about obama.

i also like how the msm NOW SAYS that obama & co are "creepy" and "we dont know much about him." maybe if the msm didnt crucify palin they would have found out how incompitent and unqualitfied obama really is. i guess the msm wants to distance itself when obama falls flat on his liberal marxist face. oh well. cant say i didnt warn ya...

hey Fred, unless you have facts, stop being a nosy-body. any post that allows me to point out how palin is better than obama is fair game. why not mind your own business. I see you are a card-carrying retard yourself since you seem to THINK you are able to read people's minds that you have NO CLUE ABOUT.

as far as Dave L's comments, Sarah and Huckabee would make a great team or either of them by themselves. either of them are miles above biden-obama. cant wait to see the libs fall flat on their faces in the first 100days as they drag the USA into the toilet.

Well, 48% of Americans casting ballots said that OBAMA does not have the experience to serve effectively as president.

That's pretty alarming considering Obama is NOT running for VP -- he's running for president.

But here's the thing... Voters are human. They have feelings and emotions.

If "inexperienced" is the code word for "black, arrogant, socialist, elitist, Chicago politics..."

then "unqualifed" is the code word for "woman, racist, anti-choice, anti-gay, attack dog..."

If you believe the exit polls, then BIDEN is more qualified to be president than McCain. Even die-hard Democrats may have a problem with that proposition.

Would Biden have polled so well (better than McCain) IF he had accused McCain of "palling around with terrorists," "not like us..." or, IF he had been accused of provoking death threats against John McCain?

Think about it.

More importantly, though, voters who cited Palin's selection as a factor in their vote -- 60% of all voters -- favored McCain by 56% to 43%.

Unlike McCain or Biden, Obama and Palin are political "rock stars." People who like Obama or Palin for whatever reason would vote for him (for president) or her (for VP) no matter what, even if they think he or she is too inexperienced or unqualifed - or they may convince themselves that he or she is.

Obama is a scholar. Palin is an uneducated opportunist puppet for the ultra right wing scarlet "A" agenda.. That is ALL they care about. The country could go to H E double LL and as long as they can own a woman's uterus that's their goal. I swear these folks must have come out of a time capsule from a very old time. I think it's time for them to wake up already or go back to where they came from. They are not living in the right century.

Bottom line: the smear campaign against her worked like a charm.
Yes, it was purely evil to trip her up with gotcha questions like "What magazines do you read?"

Consider this: support for a person such as Sarah Palin comes from that fraction of the public who views her as _more_ educated, _more_ intelligent, and _more_ qualified than they are...

I remain concerned for the future of such a country.

Dear Wingnuts,

Please run Sarah in 2012.
Please please please please please.

Thank you,
The Rest of Us

The Right Wing is oblivious to the problems with Palin and are wishfully thinking in a fantasy that she can deliver them from the hole they are in. They insist that their message isn't at fault and Palin isn't the problem. It is that they haven't packaged and advertised right. Silly people.. government is for Adults.

Just think if Obama had been thrust into the media spotlight immediately following his 2004 convention speech. Obama with no ACORN or Axelrod and totally unprepared for the national stage. Think about the media going after him with Wright, Ayers and all his baggage and ask yourselves, where would he be today? At least Sarah is decent ambitious lady and last I heard, that was still allowed in the country. I hope she goes on to do great things.

If the Palin-istas on this thread were to actually read the Alaskan media they'd learn that "pipe line" isn't happening thanks to the corruption in the bidding process that ended up screwing Alaska's tax payers to benefit the Governor's friends who won the contract. Honest(cheaper) bids/contractors ended up in the gov's office circular file.

Then of course, there are two other cases being investigated that still have Palin on the hot seat for additional corruption charges.

But one would have to bother being an informed voter rather than intellectually constipated to have kept an eye on the Alaskan legislature and their own press.

But we all know there is that segment of 'Murkins
who's priorities aren't about ethics, honesty, accountability nor responsibility based on that good ol' boys spiritual constipation and bigotry -guiding their selections in a voting booth.

Fact of the matter is, Palin is married to a guy who was in one of the secessionist, i.e., TERRORIST groups. These groups share many of the same beliefs one Timothy McVeigh did.

She and her running-mate pandered to racists and xenophobes, Jesus-jihadists, and whatever other toxic groups that fly the Republican banner. Go ahead, put another fear-mongering candidate up in 2012; we're DONE with being afraid...for now, at least. But, alas, if you want "Joe McCarthy in drag", be my guest. I resisted eight years of fascism once, I'm strong enough to resist it again, if I have to.

Anyone that thinks Palin is qualified to be Prez must be even stupider than she is, a scary thought.

Obama has written four books, and Palin can't remember if she has read one? I have to agree with the comment above; please run Palin in 2012, and help assure Obama's re-election.

to the Obama haters and Palin idolators on this thread (and elsewhere): What part of "you lost" do you not understand?
