It's a beautiful day here on Long Island; this morning, around 7:30, my son and I walked together through our neighborhood to the school where we vote. We came to the polls with our voter registration cards in our hands (in case they were needed though so far they never have been); as soon as we walked into the gym we were greeted with a warm smile and immediately directed to our voting station.
The lines weren't too long, I don't think we were there more than twenty minutes. While waiting on line to vote we heard volunteers saying that there were many people already waiting when they opened in the morning; they also said that there had been a very big rush just before we got there. The most frequent comment I heard was that they had never before seen so many people come so early to vote.
In our district we still use lever-type voting machines which make a very distinctive click-clack sound that resonates inside the old wooden gym. Forever my family has voted this way; I think that should our area modernize to electronic voting I will sorely miss the sound of the click-clack which has been woven into memories of every voting day of my life.
Later this afternoon when Hubs gets home I'll go with him over to the school and keep him company while he votes. Hopefully there will be something left on the PTA bake-sale table then because I didn't get any cupcakes this morning ;-O
I voted in the Pennsport neighborhood of Philadelphia. I got to my polling place at 6:55 with polls opening at 7:00, and I was 14th in line. Things moved very smoothly, and I was out by 7:10. There were about 25 people waiting when I walked out. The weather is fine in Philly --a bit overcast but not cold and not wet.
On my way to work, I walked by 4 other polling places, and the lines looked manageable. Most of the people I chatted with said they had no difficulties, but I did hear that both machines were down at the 4th & Ritner polling place in South Philly.
small town arkansas - no lines, nobama bumper stickers in the parking lot - five minutes max. we were pleased.
I live the Jersey part of the Philly suburbs. I got to my polling location a bit after 6 when they opened. The guy monitoring the voting machine mentioned that turnout was higher than normal, but lines were short and all went smooth.
About the only problem was the people behind me in line, who apparently didn't appreciate the extra time it took me to fill in my write-in votes. What can I say? Some local races featured only one party's candidates.
