Chambliss Wins; 60 Eludes Dems
![]()
With the nets and AP projecting that Sen. Saxby Chambliss will hold on to his GA Senate seat, shattering the Democrats' shot at a 60-vote filibuster proof majority, consider this:
In as much as any special election could be a test of Barack Obama's coattails before he has even been sworn in (hello!), does the vote actually reflect voters' desire to keep some check on the party's power?
And another thing -- Sorry Jim Martin, but Al Franken might be the biggest loser tonight. How likely is it that Democratic senators will push for Franken -- or vote not to seat Sen. Norm Coleman should the MN race remain tight after a recount -- now that the filibuster-proof advantage has eluded the party? Such a move is a rare happening, but tonight's GA results seems to make an aggressive move on Franken's behalf less likely.

This is a really meaningless comment about Franken. There are always senators who vote against their party (both sides) so there is nothing magical about 60 from one party, the number is only important among bloviators.
It's always good to have more Democratic senators so if they have a case for Franken they will pursue it.
chuckles, I am interested in knowing why it is ALWAYS good to have more democratic senators. It seems to me that have more democratic senators won't have any more effect on this 'do nothing' congress than what it is doing now.
It's useless to see this as a national election, even though national money poured in here in unprecedented quantities. This was a nasty campaign decided on negatives--as befits a Chambliss campaign, btw. You have no idea how ugly it is to live in the ONLY state in the nation having an election with the stakes so high. I cringed when I turned on the TV and saw back to back to back to back negative ads until they all ran together. Chambliss's landslide is a result of turnout. Republicans were more fearful of a Democratic mandate than Democrats were hopeful for it. Without a large black turnout, Jim Martin---a good man, all in all---was doomed. It isn't amazing that Chambliss won by such a large margin. It's amazing Martin got this far at all. Credit the state's weird election law for that.
Judging from two of the above posts, methinks the grapes runneth greatly sour this eve.
Two things to ponder:
1. Cheer up. On one hand, a filibuster-proof Senate would mean total Democrat ownership of the economy if or, more likely, when it really heads south next year. The situation is likely going to be so bad that the Donks will need every fig leaf they can find to hide behind.
2. On the other hand, this also means Mitch McConnell will be, whenever necessary, on offense this coming year. The ability to filibuster means that, at the very least, the GOP be able to shape, slow down, or even kill bad legislation, which is just fine by me. Looks like the Obamillenium may not yet be quite at hand.
Of course, Harry Reid might try to change the Senate rules...but that would just make him look more like the arrogant, underperforming, hypocritical prick we all know he is anyway.
On Nov 4th at my Atlanta suburban voting precinct in Georgia Obamas Thugs infiltrated and disguised themselves as poll volunteers and poll watchers, ignoring elderly voters and handicapped persons in wheelchairs waiting in lines for three hours whom by state law are allowed to be placed in front of any lines. That's just LUDICRIS!
This morning I couldn't find a black person within a mile of my precinct to oppress my vote.
What I did find was ethnic groups Czechs, Hispanics, Muslims, Hindus among others smiling at me "for some reason" exclaiming that they voted for Saxby. Very odd as I did not elicit any comment and was just minding my own business.
Democrats in Georgia can't expect the "bros and sistas" to put away the crack pipe to vote for a white man!
Political suicide in Georgia has a name "LUDICRIS"!
Filibuster proof Senate? not with the many Rinos willing to cross party line and hand the Dems a victory. H*ll one of these notorious Rinos became the GOP's presidential nominee. The next four years are going to be torture. Assume the crash position.
If Al Franken were to win it only contribute to the further dumbing down of Congress!!!!!!!
How could Franken be a bigger loser than Martin? After all, he still has a chance to win. Martin has already lost.
We do need a balanced Congress. But I feel sorry for the GOP person who objects to some bill that the majority of people want.
Just maybe Obama would take his view to the American people and explain why and by whom such bill is being held up. Think that elected critter would hear from his constitutes? I'm sure that person would, and would probably change his/her mind in a hurry.
