Gingrich On 2012: Palin "Is Very Formidable"

WASHINGTON -- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrigh said today that the 2012 Republican Party nominee will emerge from "a wide open field" -- but he suggested that AK Gov. Sarah Palin would have a "substantial advantage" in Iowa, the first-in-the nation caucus state, where she has "a very big base."

"If Sarah Palin seeks out a group of sophisticated policy advisers and spends time developing a series of fairly sophisticated positions," Gingrich said during his 33rd visit to the Christian Science Monitor breakfast series, "she is very formidable."

If the economy is still "a mess" a year from now, however, then Gov. Mitt Romney's business experience might become more relevant, Gingrich added. The former Speaker also mentioned another possible contender, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, who is expected to run for Texas governor.

Gingrich, who is running a policy organization called American Solutions, didn't make a pitch for his own candidacy.

"Nobody knows today who is going to fill the vacuum," he said, comparing this cycle with 1977, in particular, when Ronald Reagan was one of many well-known GOPers seeking the party's nomination.

Gingrich sharply critictized the Obama administration and Democratic congressional leaders for not involving Republicans in the drafting process of the stimulus bill. He called the proposal, which the House approved last week without a single Republican vote, "a bad bill."

"If Nancy Pelosi wants to run a one-party dictatorship then she should run it with Democratic votes," Gingrich said.

With Republican input, Gingrich said the bill would have included additional tax cuts, more infrastructure spending and less money for welfare programs.

"You would've had a substantially different bill," he said.

Gingrich also suggested that the Obama bailout actually echoes the Bush administration's spending proposal.

"This is not change you can believe in," he said. "This is more of the same."

The former House leader, whose Contract with America swept Republicans into power in 1994, also suggested that former Bush Treasury Sec. Hank Paulson and Obama Treasury Sec. Tim Geithner have ties to Wall Street that make them predisposed to support economic policies friendly to the nation's banks.

"I think Geithner is fronting for the banks," Gingrich said.

The nation's economic slowdown will last between three to five years, Gingrich predicted, noting, too, that the White House's plan bails out businesses that are already laying off tens of thousands of workers. The government, he said, shouldn't be "cushioning" the failures of industry.

"You can't have capitalism on the way up and socialism on the way down," he said.

Gingrich also hammered the Democrats for supporting the Employee Free Choice Act, also known as the card-check bill. The proposal would make it easier for workers to join a union.

"I don't think the Democrats understand yet how unpopular this is going to be," he said.

Putting policy aside, however, Gingrich praised the Obama team. "It is as disciplined and strategic an effort as we've seen in our lifetime," he said.

I think she is ready to run in 2012

Those who disrespect Gov. Palin are only disrespecting themselves. If there were a compilation (and there may be somewhere) of all the unprecedented vitriolic slander directed at this absolutely charming intelligent and RESPECTFUL woman, it would deserve a place of honor in a Hall Of Shame.
I have come to the conclusion that certain types of people need scapegoats and sacrificial victims to satisfy some kind of atavistic sadism that compels them to attack what is beautiful and good. Any NORMAL human being, would be able to see that Sarah Palin is a down to earth good person and agree or disagree with her policies and positions, afford the high respect that is her DUE, that she DESERVES, for her honest work on behalf of the American People and her lifelong efforts to live in a loving, intelligent and moral life..

I will support her, donate to her campaign, raise thousands and manage several call centers for her in Miami!!!

She won't be accepted by the larger GOP. She doesn't fit in with their new Black face...I mean Affirmative Action pandering..I mean...minority outreach agenda.

As a Democrat and Obama supporter I can only wish that this is indeed the case. Palin 2012

I have already put in to motion the plans needed to take a leave of absence in 2010 so I can campaign for Gov. Sarah Palin 24/7. What ever it takes!

I think it is awesome these people are so gung ho for Palin. Get her nominated! I say this because she stands a snowballs chance in hell of being elected to anything outside of Alaska and. Nothing against her personally. I do not know her. She is not bigger a fool than Mitt Romney or Ron Paul. Personally? I say watch Mike Huckabee....He is someone who could surprise though..

I will support Sarah Palin if she runs in 2012. So far I'm not very impressed with Obama. This could change between now and then, but if it's this way in 2010-2011, she'll definitely have my support for change.

Christie,

I hope you do differentiate between those who don't support Palin or her philosophies and those who 'disrespect'. Open disagreement is an important part of the free political process that democracy embraces. All candidates must be prepared to deal with disagreement and even outright lack of support...it's part of the process...It's not the same as disrespect...

Folks, I advise you to prepare for a long period of economical turmoil. Barry won't fix anything. he never has fixed anything and never will. he is a chicken first class, who is hidding behind his skin color whenever things tend to get hot. As for Sarah... She has my vote, my time and my resources. Just tell me Sarah where, what and how much. It will be refreshing to see something in the White House who has actually struggle throughout his life and did not sell his soul to get on the top.

I am so sick and tired of these couch, faty-lazy Republicans like Gingrich, McConnell, McCain, Graham and other ballless men, that it is incredible.

I know many Palin supporters can't read, but good luck in 2012. You're going to need it. In the meantime, pick up a book. You might like it!

Remember that the ONLY time that McCain was ever ahead was at the announcement of Palin! Libs like to state that she is not the one. I was telling them a year ago that Obama was not the one. HMMMMMMMM.

Sarah Palin "2012"
Christy, The liberal press went after her for 1 basic reason, "she scared them". They sent their lawyers to Alaska, could not find a thing. She has more experience in management and the actual running of something, than Obama, Biden and McCain combined. Thats why we have not had a senator become president since JFK. Senators do nothing. She is fresh, owes no one, is honest and by the awakening of conservatives when McCain announced her, if handled properly, she will be the next president in 2012. Even if it takes starting a conservative party. After Obama reaches Jimi Carter numbers, double digit inflation, unemployment ect. ect., conservatism will be back...

I don't think Newt knows a whole lot about Iowa. Romney was not all that far behind Huckabee and if either run again, they could well defeat her. Much as I hate to say it, the State also seems to have trouble supporting female politicians in both caucuses and in fall elections. Iowa has never elected a woman to Congress or to the office of governor.

GO SARAH! Media keep talking up Bobby Piyush Jindal, but we won't make the same mistake the dems did. Jindal is a muslim who claims to be a Christian just another BO. This nation needs to repent. PALIN 2012!

Hellena, are you a troll or just insane?

TJ Why would you blog negatively about Palin and direct those comments towards her supporters who you say can't read. People like you get trapped in your own sarcasm and reveal your true ignorance. I will walk circles around you in the intellectual realm Your Messiah also doesn't impress me. His catch phrases are not his own and he merely takes quotes from others and expands upon them. He has a conglomeration of punch lines and an impressive delivery, but in reality I believe he is an empty suit and I believe you are also. Palin would chew you up in intellectual combat.

Those Palin Days
(sung to the theme of “All In The Family”)

Sarah was a pageant queen,
Todd just rides a snow-machine,
Parents of a pregnant teen.

Those Palin days.

And she would be in Washington,
If she had won that election.
But we can thank the Lord above
For huge voter rejection.

Guv’nor of a welfare state,
Preaching politics of hate,
We all remember “Trooper-Gate”

Those Palin days.

Palin's history in Alaska is not compelling to me. Firing many city administrators in Wasilla in order to "take charge" isn't a sign of good management. It's a sign of paranoia. She's clearly out for power and loves the public attention she's gotten since McCain's decision to promote her for VP. Iowans can be pretty sophisticated but there is a very large conservative religious community that could be attracted to her. I wish her and her family well. Currently she isn't an attractive choice to me but after 4 years of strenuous public relations, who knows what I'll think.

BiggestJohn...I see you are already starting trying to blame Obama for the economic mess we are in now. Get this straight: this is a horribly bad cycle and it's the fault of the darling of the GOP: GW Bush and 4 full years of GOP House and Senate majority. Only a complete MORON would support the GOP any more. Let me take that back - only someone who hates America would vote GOP. At least Obama is trying to fix Bush's mess. You and others like you are trying to point blame. Typical.

Please, use common sense and nominate Mitt Romney who should have been nominated in 2008.

It doesn't take a genus to see the real Palin.
She is honest, moral, loves America and God and has more government experience than any of those who have run this past year. I truly pray that she and Mike Huckabee will run together. I don't care in which order they run, but, that they just run together. For once couldn't we finally elect TWO people who have ethical characters and are under moral convictions. Two who have a heart for the BEST for the people of this nation.
I know in my heart that they will have a hugh mess to clean up. Pray hard for this nation!
