MO Money, MO Money
MO Sec/State Robin Carnahan (D) nearly doubled Rep. Roy Blunt (R) in terms of overall receipts for the 1stQ, raising nearly $1.05M to Blunt's $560K. Even with Blunt's modest cash head-start (from his pre-existing House account), Carnahan still ended the quarter with more CoH: $928K to Blunt's $674K. Nearly all of the top tier SEN candidates this cycle have been able to raise at least $1M this Q, meaning Blunt will have to significantly kick his fundraising pace up a notch to remain competitive with Carnahan.
As with many SEN candidates this Q, neither MO candidate began their fundraising until February, and Blunt spokesperson Rich Chrismer notes: "We are pleased to have raised $542,034 in only six weeks, or half the calendar quarter, while launching a full statewide campaign of travel and one-on-one communication. In sharp contrast, Carnahan's office is on auto-pilot, and Carnahan herself is essentially invisible to the voters, and inaccessible to the news media. Her confirmed sightings have been confined mainly to high-dollar elite fundraisers in Manhattan and Washington."
The Carnahan camp touts their numbers: "In less than 60 days, we raised over one million dollars! Actually, we raised $1,048,000 (to be exact) from more than 1,400 contributions. In these tough economic times, when so many families are reeling from the failed policies of the Bush years, I couldn't be more grateful for this outpouring of early support from so many friends. Getting our economy back on track is job one. And I know you share my sense of urgency that our elected officials should focus on doing just that"
