Giuliani Update: No Decision Yet
Former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani has not decided whether to run for Gov or Senate, contrary to earlier reports.
Spokesperson Maria Comella, in a statement emailed to reporters, dismisses a New York Times report that Giuliani will not run against Gov. David Paterson (D) and a New York Daily News report that he will run against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D) as premature.
"Rudy has a history of making up his own mind and has no problem speaking it. When Mayor Giuliani makes a decision about serving in public office, he will inform New Yorkers on his own," Comella said.
If Giuliani does decide to challenge Gillibrand, he would give GOPers one of their strongest recruits to date. Giuliani would lead Gillibrand by a 54% to 40% margin, according to a Marist College poll released late Thursday. Giuliani would have a 14-point lead among independent voters and would even boast a 3-point lead in the city he used to govern.
"If Giuliani were to capture the U.S. Senate seat from heavily Democratic New York State, it would return him to the national spotlight big time," said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist polling institute.
The poll, conducted 11/12 and 11/16-17 among 805 registered voters, has a margin of error of +/- 3.5%.
Former aides to Giuliani have long said Giuliani would be more likely to run for Gov than for Senate, but with the prospect of facing a Dem in much better political shape than Paterson, Giuliani may be rethinking that position. Many in NY believe that AG Andrew Cuomo (D) is preparing his own campaign for Gov.
Most aides to Giuliani, current or former, believe he is likely to stay in the private sector. But the flurry of rumor today proves, once again, that Hizzoner is not done making political waves just yet.
