Palin Freezing Out CBS, Disappointing No One
Anyone pining for a second meeting between Sarah Palin and Katie Couric is going to be sorely disappointed.
Sources tell Hotline OnCall that Couric's producer sent two requests to Palin's publisher for interviews during the "Going Rogue" book tour, and so far, Couric has been denied.
It's not surprising -- Palin has not agreed to sit down with more than a small handful of mainstream media interviewers -- but the move looks to be part of a larger Palin blackout from CBS News and Entertainment.
Palin told FNC's Sean Hannity that after an ill-fated joke last summer, there will be no appearances on CBS' "Late Show" as well: "Forgiveness and vengeance isn't mine. I'm not out for vindication, but I'm thinking, practically, economically, in terms of a David Letterman visit, I don't want to boost his ratings so -- no, I have no desire to."
Palin has avoided CBS programming since her '08 interview with Couric, and as of now, there are no plans for any future Palin interviews on CBS.
Couric and Letterman, however, are not the only current or former employees of CBS who have irked Palin. The McCain staffer of whom she has been most critical, Nicolle Wallace, was a paid political analyst for CBS News prior to joining the McCain campaign. Additionally, the "Early Show" is a favored forum for Levi Johnston to expound on the ex-AK Gov.
In July '09, just after Palin resigned from office, the networks descended upon Alaska for interviews. Among those who scored sit-downs: CNN's Drew Griffin, NBC's Andrea Mitchell and ABC's Kate Snow.
No CBS.
Palin addressed those days in "Going Rogue": "We issued an open invitation for the press (except CBS)."

Interestingly, the liberal slant of MSNBC's evening programming and Tina Fey's scathing "SNL" impersonation did not deter Palin from Mitchell's microphone either that time or when Mitchell tracked her down on book tour this past week.
And it was on ABC where Palin first ran into trouble discussing foreign policy with anchor Charles Gibson. She has accused the anchor of "gotcha" journalism. That incident, however, did not keep her from sitting down with Snow last summer, or last week with Barbara Walters.
Palin has called Couric various names, including: "the perky one," "annoying," "badgering" and "condescending," while also questioning Couric's journalistic ethics and political agenda. Meanwhile, Couric has remained largely silent, and CBS' "Evening News" has had less coverage of the book tour than the other network evening broadcasts.
FNC, by far, has had the most access to Palin during book tour. But it was Bill O'Reilly, of all people, who pushed Palin on the Couric issue more than any other interviewer.
"I spoke to her a couple days ago, says she wasn't out to get you. Clearly in your book, you feel that Katie Couric was out to get you," O'Reilly said last week.
"I let the transcripts speak for itself. And readers will decide for themselves if she had any kind of bias or nonobjective mission there."
Restricting access has proven a dangerous game, as the Obama admin learned when it tried to cut off Fox News. During the most intense moments of Watergate, Pres. Nixon blacked out the Washington Post. Palin appears to be doing the same with CBS.
Repeated emails to Palin's spokesperson for comment remain unanswered.
Palin named her book appropriately! The definition of rogue: "An unprincipled, deceitful, and unreliable person; a scoundrel or rascal."
By going Rogue, Sarah can do what works for her. Many other Americans are "going rogue" and skipping mainline media because it's predictably disinterested in their points of view and intent on selling the mainline "disinformation".
Sarah and a lot of Americans are free to live full lives without mainliners. SURPRIZE !
Paullette - Why would anyone possibly believe the primary networks for news aren't really "interested" in Princess Sarah? She's on every network seven days a week, and the ONLY reason she's boycotting CBS or Couric or anyone else with a reasonable degree of intelligence is that she want to make sure no one asks her a tough question: You know...like "what do you read."
Based solely on her standing in the polls, Palin is the Dan Quayle of 2009. (She's the proud owner of a 23 percent favorable rating -- 23 percent.) So why do the media treat her as a rising superstar? Why, for instance, did The Washington Post insist on publishing dueling Going Rogue book reviews, an absurd editorial decision since the book itself was the definition of lightweight. ("It's definitely not a policy book and it's not going to change minds about her." And that was from a fan.)

She had a favorable rating in the high 40s(46, also around the same as Obama) in a recent FoxNews/OpinionDynamics poll, #13 in 2008, ahead of such other media polls as NBC/WSJ, ABC/WashPo(where that 23% came from), Gallup, CBS/NYT(#22 of 23) and Newsweek(dead last). Of course the networks and papers put out bad polls on her. They despise her. I wouldn't pay much attention to the WaPo though, we saw how powerful their influence was in VA a couple weeks ago when their handpicked candidate went down by 20 pts. To a guy endorsed by Sarah Palin, no less.
Even the Gallup poll that had her at 40% was pretty much the same as a recent Gallup Poll that had Biden at 42%. Among Independents, Palin was at 41% while Biden was at a miserable 32%.
She's doing just fine.
And she's not a rising superstar. She's a superstar. No rising. Would you say LeBron or Kobe is still rising?
No non-President has ever had a faster-selling book. Remember all the hype over Obama's book. He sold less than 20K the first day, less than than 300K the first 6 weeks. She moved more than 300K the first day. She brought Oprah her highest ratings in years, 3 million more viewers at 4PM than Obama on Letterman had. You do that and the media will pay attention to you.
As for Katie and CBS, why would she want to go on a last place newscast anchored by someone who loathes her?

DEO posed the astute question: So why do the media treat her as a rising superstar? The reason is because she is a car wreck of a human being and people like to rubberneck when they see a particularly spectacular wreck. I find her to be loathesome, but somehow interesting in a poisonous snake kind of way. For example; how can someone who is so inept convince themselves that they have all the answers. Just take a few boilerplate and snappy one liners, and a wink of the eye, mix with a pinch of folksy smarminess, and a gallon of unearned overconfidence and you end up with someone like Sarah. A more appropriate title for her book would have been "Going Rube".
McCain's geniuses steered her into the pit with Katie and the others. On her own, Sarah is smart enough to avoid those vipers. She never had their support and needn't pretend to play nice. They need her to raise their credibility. She doesn't need them. And we need a conservative alternative to SNL. Ridicule is a powerful weapon and its time the current administration got its share.
America's greatest threat...Sarah Palin
Maybe a lot of Palin's appeal is her uneducated word-salady way of expressing herself -- after all, I'm sure "a lot of Americans" as Paullette puts it, similarly don't know the difference between Iraq and Iran.
But for sure, Palin's appearance is appealing to those same people -- her outdated and outmoded "big-hair" Bump-It hairdo, her heavy hand with the rouge (hm, her "signature look"?) and glossy lipstick, her frumpy clothes now that the RNC isn't dressing her, and the ubiquitous black pencil skirt (that she wore when she was 7 months "pregnant", too).
Oh, yeah, another thing is appealing to her fans, too, and she knows it -- the underdressed prop baby she emerges from her private plane or bus with, and holds for a couple of seconds for photo ops. Then she hands this little "political football" over to her aide with nary a kiss or a parting hug for the tyke.
All you Palin fans -- enjoy Palin's looks while you can, because she'll start looking like Aunt Katie in a few years if she keeps getting work done on her face.

Palin gets press. Who cares? She's a celebrity, a personality, not a leader. The people following her have a tenuous (at best) grasp of the issues the actual government has to grapple with, and resolve. Hello, folks, we are STILL on the brink of major global economic collapse thanks to Republican deregulation, tax policies and war. Manufacturing jobs in the US are almost non-existent, again, thanks to Republicans, and Sarah hails from the biggest socialist welfare state in the US. Alaskans benefit from socialized wealth distribution from the gas and oil industry and receive more Federal dollars per person than any other state. How is that freedom from "big government"? More like freedom from having to pay for your own roads! She's just mad that Katie Couric is a cute blonde and looks the same age as her!

Did you think you were pulling the wool over anyone's eyes by listing Rasmussen, FoxNews, WSJ WashPo and Gallup polls, and panning the relatively neutral Newsweek?
Those first 4 lean anywhere from moderately right to far right -- and considering the bias you usually see in their polling questions, that would make them usually WRONG.
I'd look for true neutrality and accurate polling from Pollster.com, which rates Obama at 49.1%-45.6% approve-disapprove --

Just picture the home library of the typical Sarah Palin fan: Books by Beck, O'Reilly, Hannity and Palin, plus the Bible, the spines on each as pristine and uncracked as the day they were purchased. No Hemingway, no Faulkner, no Steinbeck, no Twain, no Salinger, no Whitman and you can be damn sure no Shakespeare. Perhaps some Stephen King or Tim LaHaye.
According to PPP (which is an average of all Polls) Palin has an UNFAVORABLE rating of 49.1%. Her favorable rating is 38.5%.
President Obama has a favorable rating of 55.5% and an unfavorable rating of 38.5% -- the exact number of half-term Governor Palin's Favorable rating.
So, much for Palin being viewed more favorably than President Obama.
Of course she's not going to sit back down with Katie Couric; Katie made her look like what she is: an ignorant blowhard who thought she could breeze through a serious interview with a wink and a "You betcha!". She'll be making the rounds with the networks who won't expose her ignorance, because their viewers are Sarah Palin fans as well (I'm lookin at YOU, FAUX).

A modern presidential primary lasts longer and is MUCH harder work than her 18 months as governor of backwater oil-keeps-the-budget-in-surplus Alaska. Then she'll quit the race in order to "be more effective."

Couric didn't ask her any inappropriate questions and it was definitely not Couric who caused SP to answer in basically incoherent sentences. Tina Fey used SP's answers basically verbatim with the exception of the "dollar value meal" and "I'd like to phone a friend" lines. SP is a doing well because the right doesn't care that she's stupid so long as she's pro-life and not black.
Comparing Obama's war on Fox News and Palin's refusal to do anything on CBS isn't fair.
Obama can avoid Fox News but he can't say they are entirely unfair and personal in what Fox reports. He just doesn't like what they report.

Uh, Chuck, I hate to break this to you but Sarah Palin will never get enough votes to be elected President of the United States. I'll grant you she's charismatic, attractive and at the moment popular even dare I say, one of us... but she's also extremely polarizing and shows absolutely no interest in listening to, or reaching out to those who in her opinion are not "real americans". Her entire policy philosophy seems to be summed up in two words - "common sense" which while quaint, doesn't quite cut it on the world stage...I can see her holding some sway over the GOP to include some of the more radical planks from her far right constituency at the next convention. (One of the fallacies of the teabaggers is that they're the real middle of the road americans - sorry - just not so). But the moderates on both sides, the independents in the middle, and the lefties are going to lean Democrat or Moderate Republican, but not far right, which is Sarah-Land. I think she just wants the cash and the fame, and just think she wants the power of political position. Just wondering, when did Fox (or any Murdoch owned tabloid or outlet) become the "mainstream" media? Perhaps it was the interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network, that should be considered the "mainstream" media?
She did do interviews with Oprah and Barbara Walters, but neither one of these two ever dig past the surface and ask questions about political policy. PEOPLE magazine is more hard hitting than these two.
