Scozzafava for Owens?
Two tidbits from today's papers give us an indication of where Assemb. Dede Scozzafava (R), who left the NY-23 special election yesterday, wants her supporters to go on 11/3. And, not shockingly, it's not accountant Doug Hoffman (C).
First, in a Watertown Daily Times' editorial switching its endorsement from Scozzafava to atty Bill Owens (D), the Daily Times notes that Scozzafava "began to quietly and thoughtfully encourage her supporters to vote for" Owens after her withdrawal announcement 10/31.
And, according to the New York Post, Scozzafava's husband -- Central Labor Council pres. Ron McDougall -- wholeheartedly endorsed Owens late last p.m. McDougall: "As a life-long labor activist, I know that Bill Owens understands the issues important to working people. On the other hand, Doug Hoffman has little regard for the interests of workers. Hoffman's opposition to the Employee Free Choice Act, coupled with his support for the failed policies of the Bush Administration make him a poor choice to serve the citizens of the 23rd Congressional District."
Also following McDougall and the Daily Times in switching from the Scozzafava to the Owens camp are several other unions, including the UAW. Will these labor orgs, which have experienced GOTV operations, be enough to counterbalance the support that Hoffman will get from Scozzafava's departure?

Not surprising - she is a liberal, heart and soul. How the republicans, both NY and national, and Gingrich endorsed her is a mystery, and one that must be solved if the GOP is to ever find itself.
See, Newt, this is why we were so against Dede. You may be afraid of a divided Republican party, but clearly she isn't.
This makes the point of conservatives....are you listening RNC?
Exactly! This is the reason we conservatives don't want her in Congress. She is a RINO with deep liberal roots. Her husband is a 'lifelong labor activist' and blames President Bush for everything. Duh!
It's no wonder the Republican base ousted Scozzafava as their party's representative. If she has the support of local labor unions, odds are she wasn't really that much of a Republican to begin with. Her husband is a "labor activist"?
There is a reason we have primaries which this election did NOT have. Good riddance to liberal republicans.
wow - i guess the MSM had better start writing about the "rift" in the democratic party. seems that some of them have been calling themselves republicans (dede). thats kinda a rift, i'd say. they're doomed looks like. eh? using the msm's "logic". and i wonder why that would be, hmmmm?? why would a DEM call themselves a REP?? cause the REPS are so "disunitzed". thats it!! yeah.
If this turns out to be true, it simply reinforces why shee was wholly inappropriate as a GOP candidate: willing, ready and able to join up with Dems to thwart conservative action.
Bloomberg in NYC is another RINO. The GOP better get its act together and weed out phony Repubs like Scuzzafava, Bloomberg, Powell etc.. The only one that makes any sense is Sarah Palin.
Dede Scozzafava is more like a liberal Democrat, and, that what is what brought on the Conservative backlash. We need two parties in this country, not just one, and it will have to be this way until our politicians are enlightened enough to start wanting to take care of ALL of the people, not just their respective self interest groups. The Republicans have been acting more and more like Democrats for the last eight years and have been getting beat up for it. The grass-roots reaction to what has happened is the natural result of an out-of-control government, in spite of all of the spin to the contrary, and that is what is worrying both of our established political parties. They both are beginning to realize that they will either have to change to reflect the will of the people or go the same way that the dinosaur went.
Maybe the voters in Maine will follow and out the se two RINO senators.
Maybe the voters in Maine will follow and out the se two RINO senators.
HWM
Thus the reason for the Hoffman candidacy in the first place. Scozzafava and Owens are the same thing.
That ought to hit the conservative base in the nose. Too many still think that the GOP cares about them, when it is just going along to get along, playing conservatives like the Dems play the blacks, and they're perfectly happy playing the number two position. They still get invited to the ball like the rest of the entrenched ruling class, and their weapon, besides using your money to defeat your wishes, is that old 90% rate of returning them, no matter what. Throw them out and we've got a chance. Replace the entrenched, then demand for term limits, lest we find ourselves having to fight our servants again some day -if we can do it without a revolution... Those of you that argue that we don't need term limits because we have election haven't been looking at what's happened to our courts, our election corruption, illegals, ignorant, paid off masses like unions. To assume a sophisticated electorate is like looking at another planet.
Speaking about RINOs, one of Hoffman's positions is quite RINO/GWB-like. What he appears to support would raise the taxes on his supporters and reduce their electoral power. Details at my name's link.
No conservative is ever going to be elected in Maine, which makes kicking Snowe and Collins out tricky, because you can bet that the Dem that replaces them is going to be ultra left. This state is nuts enough to elect Shelly Pingree (on her knees Obama lover) so it will not hesitate to elect more marxist if their favorite RINO's are not available. That being said, it is time to take back the primaries and get some decent conservative candidates on the ballot.
I hate it when websites ask a question in the title, as if the reader has the answer. You are the one who should be informing us! If you don't know if Scozzafaba will endorse the Democrat, then don't waste your time and our time. Wait until you KNOW whether she will endorse the Democrat.
It is frustrating for us who live in the NY-23 to see others project their own interpretations on our situation up here. First, labor has been part of a winning coalition in this district for over 20 years. That is how McHugh won and that is why Dede had union support. Can Hoffman win without the support of 80,000 union households? We will find out. Secondly, Dede Scozzafava is within the mainstream of the Republican Party of NYS, fiscally conservative and socially moderate or libertarian. We have a Conservative Party in NYS. In our case the true RINO's are those who are "conservative" but choose to register as Republicans instead of in the Conservative Party. Third, historically the NYS Republican Party has been a big tent party. At one time, Goldwater's running mate and liberal Jacob Javits were Republicans in good standing. Fourth, watch out for a backlash on Tuesday. We are an independent bunch and don't like outsiders interfering in who is going to represent us. Character counts and Hoffman broke his word to support the Republican nominee by running.
IF THIS IS TRUE, WHATEVER THE OUTCOME IS, IT IS PROOF THAT SCOZZAFAVA HAD HIJECTED THE REPUBLICAN SEAT, MISLEAD AND LIED TO REPUBLICANS AND WAS NOTHING MORE THAN A FRAUD.
AND THAT WOULD BE PROOF THAT HOFMAN AND PALIN ARE RIGHT.
dwelch -- Seriously? NO ONE who supported the stimulus is fiscally conservative.
No one who supports card check is for union workers.
Swwwwwwweeeeetttt. The liberal repub endorses a liberal democrat. She would have acted like a liberal had she won. At least this way the folks in the 23rd can now have an honest election....not an election with a fraudulent pink elephant that is lying about her political philosophy. As to the other liberal RINO's in the repub party....be honest and do the right thing, switch parties and join the liberals where you belong. I would rather lose elections based on principles than win elections based on lies.
If any republicans had voted for herthey in fact would have voted for a sheep in wolves clothing. And if any republicans vote for Owens now we really don't want them as part of our conservative party. We must now unit with even a stronger vengence. Obama and his thugs made her an offer she couldn't refuse! This will backfire on them. Get the vote out and let's make noise!
I can;t think this endorsement will help Owens. People voting for her were possibly mis informed and just voting the "party line" as they are used to doing in that part of the state. Now that she has been exposed for the liberal she is..many of her voters will feel bretrayed and may vote for Hoffman instead. If she really wanted to help Owens..she should have probably just shut up.
You have to hand it to Dede, showing a conservative streak by supporting Owens. Now that's a maverick move if I ever saw one. Plus she even quit before the election, another maverick move. Kind of a moderate version of Palin.
Actually the endorsement will help Owens. The north country of NY has a lot of union jobs with all the prisons, state institutions, and Fort Drum providing much of the jobs. In addition, the dairy farmers need support, plus there are many environmental issues in the area with acid rain and the St. Lawrence Seaway.
It's a moderate Republican area. It's represented by the GOP for more than a century. If Owens wins, it would be a major upset. That would leave only one GOP congressman in NY.
