WOW - OBAMA KNEW - did nothing!

The U.S. government had intelligence from Yemen before Christmas that leaders of a branch of Al Qaeda there were talking about "a Nigerian" being prepared for a terrorist attack, the New York Times reported Tuesday.

A senior official told the Times that President Obama was told in a private meeting Tuesday while vacationing in Hawaii that the government had a variety of information in its possession before the failed bombing on a Detroit-bound flight last week that would have been a clear warning sign had it been shared among intelligence agencies.

The newspaper said the information did not include the name of the Nigerian.

A CIA official prepared a report on Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab after a meeting with the suspect's father in November, who shared information about his son's extremist views, CNN reported Tuesday. The report was sent to CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, but it sat there for five weeks and was not disseminated, a "reliable source" said.

"Had that information been shared... [he] might have been denied passage on the Northwest Airlines flight," the source reportedly said.

"This agency, like others in our government, is reviewing all data to which it had access, not just what we ourselves may have collected, to determine if more could have been done to stop Abdulmutallab."

The president acknowledged Tuesday that a "systemic failure" on multiple levels allowed Abdulmutallab to board the flight, amid growing evidence of missed warning signs.

The president, in his most extensive comments so far on what went wrong in the security process, said information about the terror suspect was not properly shared among agencies. He said that information, particularly a warning to authorities from the 23-year-old suspect's father in Nigeria, should have landed him on a no-fly list well before he boarded the Northwest Airlines flight in Amsterdam.

"The warning signs would have triggered red flags and the suspect would have never been allowed to board that plane for America," Obama said. "A systemic failure has occurred, and I consider that totally unacceptable."

Senior U.S. officials told The Associated Press that intelligence authorities are now looking at conversations between the suspect in the failed attack and at least one Al Qaeda member. They did not say how these communications with the suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, took place -- by Internet, cell phone or another method.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters, said the conversations were vague or coded, but the intelligence community believes that, in hindsight, the communications may have been referring to the Detroit attack. One official said a link between the suspect's planning and Al Qaeda's goals was becoming more clear.

Obama said a mix of "human and systemic failures" contributed to what could have been a "catastrophic breach of security."

A senior administration official, speaking with reporters on condition of anonymity, said enough was known about the suspect to stop him, but the government didn't connect the dots.

"It is now clear to us that there were bits and pieces of information that were in the possession of the U.S. government in advance of the Christmas Day attack -- the attempted Christmas Day attack -- that had they been assessed and correlated could have led to a much broader picture and allowed us to disrupt the attack," the official said.

The suspect was not on the "no-fly" list or a separate list that would have required secondary screening at an airport.

Obama said there were several "deficiencies" in the intelligence-gathering process, and that information about the suspect "could have and should have been pieced together."

"It's becoming clear that the system that's been in place for years now is not sufficiently up to date to take full advantage of the information we collect and the knowledge we have," Obama said.

The comments come as the administration launches a review of airport screening and the terror watch list system. The president said a preliminary review is due to him by Thursday.

"We need to learn from this episode and act quickly to fix the flaws in our system because our security is at stake and lives are at stake," he said.

WOW - OBAMA KNEW - did nothing!

The U.S. government had intelligence from Yemen before Christmas that leaders of a branch of Al Qaeda there were talking about "a Nigerian" being prepared for a terrorist attack, the New York Times reported Tuesday.

A senior official told the Times that President Obama was told in a private meeting Tuesday while vacationing in Hawaii that the government had a variety of information in its possession before the failed bombing on a Detroit-bound flight last week that would have been a clear warning sign had it been shared among intelligence agencies.

The newspaper said the information did not include the name of the Nigerian.

A CIA official prepared a report on Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab after a meeting with the suspect's father in November, who shared information about his son's extremist views, CNN reported Tuesday. The report was sent to CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, but it sat there for five weeks and was not disseminated, a "reliable source" said.

"Had that information been shared... [he] might have been denied passage on the Northwest Airlines flight," the source reportedly said.

A CIA spokesman confirmed the report Tuesday, saying: "We learned of Abdulmutallab in November, when his father came to the U.S. embassy in Nigeria and sought help in finding him. We did not have his name before then."

"This agency, like others in our government, is reviewing all data to which it had access, not just what we ourselves may have collected, to determine if more could have been done to stop Abdulmutallab."

The president acknowledged Tuesday that a "systemic failure" on multiple levels allowed Abdulmutallab to board the flight, amid growing evidence of missed warning signs.

The president, in his most extensive comments so far on what went wrong in the security process, said information about the terror suspect was not properly shared among agencies. He said that information, particularly a warning to authorities from the 23-year-old suspect's father in Nigeria, should have landed him on a no-fly list well before he boarded the Northwest Airlines flight in Amsterdam.

"The warning signs would have triggered red flags and the suspect would have never been allowed to board that plane for America," Obama said. "A systemic failure has occurred, and I consider that totally unacceptable."

Senior U.S. officials told The Associated Press that intelligence authorities are now looking at conversations between the suspect in the failed attack and at least one Al Qaeda member. They did not say how these communications with the suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, took place -- by Internet, cell phone or another method.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters, said the conversations were vague or coded, but the intelligence community believes that, in hindsight, the communications may have been referring to the Detroit attack. One official said a link between the suspect's planning and Al Qaeda's goals was becoming more clear.

Obama said a mix of "human and systemic failures" contributed to what could have been a "catastrophic breach of security."

A senior administration official, speaking with reporters on condition of anonymity, said enough was known about the suspect to stop him, but the government didn't connect the dots.

"It is now clear to us that there were bits and pieces of information that were in the possession of the U.S. government in advance of the Christmas Day attack -- the attempted Christmas Day attack -- that had they been assessed and correlated could have led to a much broader picture and allowed us to disrupt the attack," the official said.

The suspect was not on the "no-fly" list or a separate list that would have required secondary screening at an airport.

Obama said there were several "deficiencies" in the intelligence-gathering process, and that information about the suspect "could have and should have been pieced together."

"It's becoming clear that the system that's been in place for years now is not sufficiently up to date to take full advantage of the information we collect and the knowledge we have," Obama said.

The comments come as the administration launches a review of airport screening and the terror watch list system. The president said a preliminary review is due to him by Thursday.

"We need to learn from this episode and act quickly to fix the flaws in our system because our security is at stake and lives are at stake," he said.

Terrorism has been around for decades, and its aim is to strike fear and create discord and emotional and financial havoc on nations. By these measures, the terrorists appear to be succeeding.

It wasn't until terrorism hit our shores and W over-reacted and used it as a pretext to invade Iraq, that we are now paying the price in terms of lost treasure and lost unity as a nation. It has been a downhill ride ever since, and Obama is now forced to do a patchwork job of trying to put Humpty Dumpty, a.k.a. the U.S., back together again. It will continue to be an uphill battle unless we try to regain some semblance of unity and come together as a nation. Can we do that? If we can't, then the terrorists will have won.

To cut to the chase, the post-2000 Republican majority in Congress followed the lead of President Bush. As the titular head of the party, he set policy, and the Republican Congress implemented it legislatively. Decreased regulation of the financial industry was one such policy imperative. So, while President Bush couldn't legislate, he COULD lead. He did so. The Congressional Republicans followed that lead, and led us all into financial disaster.

Your sleight of hand regarding whatever efforts the Democrats made during the Bush Administration to deal with the issues underlying the financial crisis doesn't change the fact that the crisis occurred as a direct result of the deregulation sought, and implemented, by Republicans at the behest of President Bush and his administration.

Regarding the efforts made by the Democrats over the last three years, suffice it to say that Republican obstructionism has proven a worthy, albeit an unfortunate, counterweight to the Democratic majority.

For the record, looking President Obama's vote on any given bill, which I assume is what you based your snarky reference to a bill that Obama voted against in connection with regulation of the subprime mortgage industry, without considering what the specifics of the bill in question were, is tantamount to referencing and/or taking it out of context. Senators and Congressman oppose bills all of the time for a variety of reasons, often times doing so because the mechanism of the bill is faulty in some way, despite the superficial allure of the bill. As you may or may not know, that was the case with respect to the bill you referencedin your comment.

Deregulation of the financial industry, and corresponding lack of oversight, occurred when the Republicans were in the majority and facillitated it as a part of the party's small government, limited regulation, let the market police itself, philosophy The Democrats' subsequent efforts to regulate were stymied by Republicans like Mitch McConnell.

I don't hold Clinton blameless. From what I've read Rove admitted that releasing any Gitmo detainees was a big mistake but they had no grounds to hold them. Can't have it both ways, complain when they are being held and complain when they are being released. Also it doesn't negate the fact that we have had 3 terrorist attacks in one year, one successful, while after 9/11 there was only one, Reid, unsuccessful.

Rush Limbaugh was rushed to the hospital because of an overdose of viagra. He was complaining of chest pains when he was on a "date".

The simplest and most obvious form of intelligence has been given up by our attorney in chief because he has decided to treat enemies of the state as protected US citizens.

The unfortunate truth is that our security apparatus, as well as the rest of our government structure, is run largely by mid-level functionaries who have been in place, for the most part, since the Reagan/Bush years.

It may be fun to point political fingers and jump up and down, but that truly won't change a thing! It's about time that the government employees who continue their incompetent existence year after year were held accountable.

But somehow we've afforded these folks union protections that the private sector would/should never allow. As an aside, the entire construct of unions was to ensure that workers got an equitable share of corporate profits. Since government has no profits, how can there be a union of government employees?

Do you honestly think things would be different if McCain were president? He would also be trying to close Guantanamo. We would still have TARP, the economic stimulus debacle, the car company bailouts, and, in all likelihood, some other wacky version of health-care reform.

In fact, Clinton had two clear opportunities to take the guy out before Osma became an urban legend and his Crime Inc. empire became an spider web of extrimists with one goal only: killing any American in sight. In fact, Clintons last opportunity to take him out was put on the back burner when Billy Boy was in the midst of the Lewinsky scandal (anyone recall that proud moment in American history??) because he felt he would be seen as trying to divert attention away from his infidelity and lying bonanza. Talk about compromising national security!

Bush inherited Clintons ineffective forigen policies and just months into his presidency 9/11 happens. 9/11 was put in motion LONG before BUSH was president. In fact Bush had put the plans back together to start funding allies (Ahmad Shah Massoud, who had gotten nothing under Clinton) in Afghanistan to find Osama when 9/11 took place. You see, during the 8 years of Clintons time in office, the Afghanistan issue was largely ignored despite the fact Osama was operating from there to bomb the World Trade Center in 1993, Bomb the USS Cole in 1995 and Bomb two embassies in Kenya (1998) and Tanzinia (1998). Bill was too busy getting blow jobs I guess to really have a plan. Clinton ever went so far as to endorse the Taliban when they took power.

So I find it not only unacceptable that these clowns think that it was Bushs failed policies.

I get alittle tired when people refer to the IRAQ war as Bush's war when it was congress that approved the war & funded it as well. The president can only sign bills not introduce them to congress. Was it or was it not democratically controlled? I don't recall. Also, weren't there about a dozen "UN" resolutions that were violated not to mention the deadline to turnover "WMD"S, whether real or not?
Second, why must you constantly bring up the fact the Pres Obama is African-American? Everyone is aware of his race (although some would argue the "American" part).

I have been reading the comments after my last post, and comparing them to the lead Article. Here are a modest Dozen proposals to make us safer. (It's a start).

1. Profile people first: profile the hell out of Arabs, Muslims, young men, young men with beards or other facial hair, people going to and from Muslim countries (particularly the "hot spots") women with Burqas, Niquabs or other traditional Muslim dress. And young children of the same (bombs in baby blankets... How loving the Islamist terrorist is).

2. Separate security lines/screening for the above: more intensive treatment than for "us".

3. Full body scans for everyone. More intensive, additional searches for #1 above.

4. The hell with Muslim "modesty" and professed "concern" for the privacy of their women.

5. Remind everyone that it is not "we" who are curtailing freedom and privacy. The above reactions are logical, sensible and effective. It is the Muslim terrorist who is forcing this choice and deprivation on everyone. If any hatred is engendered it should be for the Muslim terrorist, not our response to the terrorism. No terrorism; no intrusion. Its that simple. (This will help with PR for the below suggestions.)

6. Relentlessly pursue CAIR, INSA and the other subversive, front line troops for Jihad. Investigations, Trials, Jail, Expulsion (if warranted).

7. More effective, balanced instruction in the school system re the dangers of Islam, a religious/political/legal system (totalitarian, theocratic Shariah) that is absolutely incompatible with free will and Western values developed in this country.

8. On the military front, create specialized, small scale, "hunter-killer" teams to assasinate as may AQ as possible, irrespective of collateral damage to their families. (Turnabout is fair play).

9. Relenlessly pursue Obama to specifically denounce Muslim, Islamist, Koran inspired Jihad. Force him to give us his thoughts on Koran Surah 9 (The Sword Verses) Surah 5:51, takiyya, and what it means in practice to be a dhimmi, for example.

10. Directly ask Obama to comment on the below pronouncement by one of the greatest and most admired (by Muslims) Islamic scholars ever to live: Ibin Khaldun (1332-1406) author of "An Introduction To History", among other works:

"In the Muslim community, the holy war [jihad] is a religious duty, because of the universalism of the Muslim mission and the obligation to convert everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force ... The other religious groups did not have a universal mission, and the holy war was not a religious duty for them, save only for purposes of defense ... They are merely required to establish their religion among their own people. That is why the Israelites after Moses and Joshua remained unconcerned with royal authority [e.g., a caliphate].
