The Next Ron Paul Ramps Up

By Reid Wilson

Since Rep. Ron Paul's (R-TX) pres. campaign flamed out in '08, his loyalists have been searching for other outlets for what has the potential to become a significant political movement.

This year, Paul's ideas have gained new acceptance among establishment GOPers like Grover Norquist, ex-Rep. Dick Armey and others, and at least one Paul disciple -- his son, ophthamologist Rand Paul (R) -- is waging a serious campaign for Senate in KY (Another Paulite, stockbroker Peter Schiff, has not gained the same traction in CT).

And when '12 rolls around, the Paul forces could take another shot at the WH, in the form of ex-NM Gov. Gary Johnson (R).

On Dec. 10, Johnson lauched the OUR America Initiative, a group aimed at solving the economic crisis through Johnson's more libertarian approaches.

Johnson has insisted in several interviews he is not running for federal office -- his affiliation with the group, a 501(c)(4) organization, prohibits that -- but Johnson is clearly interested in raising his profile. He features prominently on the site, and he has embarked on a media tour to explain the new group.

Paul has been noncommital about whether he would back Johnson in a primary, or at all. But Johnson's libertarian views on everything from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to fiscal policy to drug decriminalization are the most in line with Paul's. And given his reemergence on the scene, Johnson seems interested in reigniting the excitement Paul engendered.

That movement once was bigger online than it was in real life. Though they would flood the comments section on any blog post or news article about Paul insisting their hero was set to benefit from an unpollable silent majority, the polls pretty much got Paul's support levels correct. Paul finished 2nd in NV with 14%, well behind Mitt Romney's 51%, and he didn't break 20% until the 2/9 WA primary, where he scored 22%.

But now, a Tea Party movement is growing. The latest NBC/WSJ poll showed tea partiers are viewed more favorably than both Dems and the GOP. And some in the movement have suggested they will not back an incumbent for anything. That could allow someone like Johnson, an outsider if there ever was one, to take charge of a movement that has remained leaderless.

And though he won't say he's interested in actually running for office, he had a quick answer for Politico's Jonathan Martin when asked if he'll make stops in key early states like IA and NH: "Yeah, you will."

Not gaining traction?? The game has just started and Schiff is ahead of Dodd.

Who is Peter Schiff?

Well, Rand Paul's campaign MUST be mounting a serious challenge to Trey Grayson, considering the "news" story out yesterday regarding Paul's campaign manager and alleged myspace posts. Yeah, right. It sure smells fishy... like the kind of thing professional smear tacticians would dredge up out of desperation. Paul might as well get used to this sort of dispicable garbage for the remainder of the campaign, since his opponents obviously feel they can't afford to discuss actual issues with him.

Schiff is getting out there now. Doing town halls. He has improved his delivery to come across with a bit more humility which will gain favor amongst the voters. It doesn't hurt that Schiff has been spot on on pretty much all economic events over the past decade. It will be an opportunity lost for this country if he is not elected. This goes for Rand as well.

Dr. Paul sets "standards" not just for liberals or conservatives etc., but what it means to be a true American and a responsible individual!

Stop being so dependable on government's handouts!

Contribute and be a productive member to society…

Be kind and smile at a stranger this holiday!

I support Peter Schiff in 2010.

According to http://www.JohnsonForAmerica.com, Gary Johnson was known for:

* Vetoing 750 bills (more than all the vetoes of the other 49 Governors combined).
* Reducing taxes $123 million annually.
* Cutting the rate of government growth in half.
* Eliminating the state’s budget deficit.
* Leaving the state government with 1200 fewer employees (without firing anyone).
* Leaving the state government with all-time high bond ratings.
* Enacting major welfare reform, which cut government welfare spending by 30%.
* Shifting state Medicaid to managed care.
* Bringing the New Mexico state government and the Navajo nation leadership together to finally resolve century-old disputes over water, gaming, and other issues.
* Privatizing half of the prisons in the state.
* Shooting down campaign finance legislation.
* Increasing the percentage of the budget devoted to improving the state’s education system.
* Repealing the Little Davis-Bacon Act, thereby allowing non-unionized labor the ability to be employed in construction of new schools and other public works.
* Overseeing the construction of 500 miles of new, four-lane highway (designed, financed, built, and guaranteed by the private sector).
* Running 100% positive campaigns, never mentioning his opponents once in print or ads.
* Coming from outside of politics with no political machine behind him to beat a former Republican Governor in the Republican primaries and then unseat an incumbent Democrat Governor in the general election by a 10 point victory margin, even at a time when Democrats outnumbered Republicans 2-1 in the state.

If the writer of this article doesn't think that Peter outraising all his opponents in CT constitutes the same traction Paul is enjoying in KY, then I don't know what does.

Please. Get a clue.

I know what would constitute traction, polling above single digits. How about you get a clue?

Peter can raise a billion dollars from out of state and it doesn't mean jack if actual CT residents don't vote for him. That is traction.

Here's what Peter Schiff's volunteers think of CT voters from their own mouths:
