G-L-O-R-I-A For "S-O-T-U"?

By Abby Livingston

While most of Washington awaits the coronation of George Stephanopoulos' heir apparent at ABC's "This Week," an interesting race appears to be developing for John King's crown at CNN's "State of the Union."

This year's holiday vacation for King and Stephanopoulos has been interpreted as two weeks of farm team tryouts, and at CNN the players have been decidedly ... female.

This a.m., a gun-slinging Gloria Borger showed up to anchor "SOTU," and her interview with Dep. NSA John Brennan played like a tennis match with a light-speed Howard Hawks-ian exchange. And on 12/27, CNN's Candy Crowley anchored the show, with a persistent, follow-up angle, and she earned a pretty big scalp for her belt with DHS Sec. Janet Napalitano's "the system worked" quote.

Additionally, a substitute who pitched in when King was off last summer, CNN's Jessica Yellin, ran today's 11amET "Sound of Sunday" roundtable hour.

When asked about the status of the selection process, a CNN spokesperson declined to comment.

However, the substitution selections are striking, because at the other nets' Sunday shows, it's not just the first-stringers, but the second-stringers who are male. When FNC's Chris Wallace is off, it's usually Bret Baier in his chair. At CBS, when Bob Schieffer is off, it's Harry Smith or John Dickerson. And at ABC, it's Jake Tapper and Terry Moran. The exception is NBC, where at "Meet the Press," David Gregory has not missed a single broadcast since he took over in early Dec. '08.

Interestingly, back when she was a correspondent at CBS, Borger would occasionally sub-in for Schieffer and appear alongside him for newsmaker Q&As.

wow..good active!

Gloria Borger was the best.... really....

I felt Gloria was all "democrat"...her obvious love affair with the Obama administration left me wondering if she can be objective when interviewing republicans. I feel she needs a good review of being an objective interview host.

Hopefully someone who has more to say than uh-huh when a guest says something absurd. CNN, not much hope. How long did it take them to get rid of Lou Dobbs? I mean honestly. If you're going to run the same sound bites all day, you can't even bother to get those right. I kept hoping that someone would mention that the people who gave the VISAS, as in two of them, to the airplane terrorist who set himself on fire trying to cause harm would be the people in charge during the Bush administration. No not the shoe terrorist from the earlier Bush days, the terrorist we wouldn't have had to examine (his underware no less) if Bush hadn't given him not one, but two visas.

Gloria Borger is great and she is hardly biased. You just think she's biased because you've never heard any of the "news" stations you listen to say anything good about the Democratic Party.

You may have not intended to do so, but I think you have managed to express the state of mind that a lot of people are in. The sense of wanting to help, but not knowing how or where, is something a lot of us are going through.

Thank you so much for this enormously astounding column.
