Pence To Meet With NRSC
In the wake of winning MA, GOPers are looking to put 1 more state in play if they can convince House GOP Conference chair Mike Pence to run against Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN).
Pence and his aides will meet with top staffers at the NRSC tomorrow, several sources tell Hotline OnCall, where they will discuss a possible bid. The NRSC has polled IN, and their survey shows Pence in a competitive position, though he trails Bayh in initial matchups.
GOPers have failed to recruit a top-tier challenger against the popular 2-term incumbent, thanks largely to Bayh's bankroll. He had $12.7M in the bank as of Sept. 30, and GOPers expect he would be able to raise many more millions before Election Day.
But Pence has a base, especially as the number 3 GOPer in the House, and top Senate strategists believe he would be able to raise the money to compete with Bayh. He also has the national ambition, and Senate strategists plan to point out those ambitions are difficult to achieve without a Senate seat.
Yet Pence's team is acutely aware of the financial challenge such a race would pose, and he had just $462K CoH at the end of the 3rd quarter. Pence's decision will rest heavily on whether the NRSC would make a financial commitment to help make up the early difference, a source close to Pence said. The source also said Pence is unlikely to turn down the offer soon, indicating he is taking the notion seriously.
Bayh has made an effort to distance himself from the WH in recent days. A story in the Indianapolis Star on Monday highlighted Bayh as the Senate Dem who most often votes against Pres. Obama's agenda, which he opposed 23% of the time. But GOP strategists said Bayh's votes in favor of health care, the stimulus bill and other measures would make him vulnerable to the same argument that has Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) in trouble -- that theirs represents the 60th vote in favor of unpopular legislation.
A Pence spokesperson downplayed the possibility that he is considering seeking a promotion.
"Mr. Pence is flattered by the speculation but is focused on electing House Republicans and serving the needs of his constituents in Indiana," spokesperson Matt Lloyd said in an email.
Shouldn't that be Evan Bayh (D-IN)?
Unless Bayh is in negotiations with the NRSC too...

What are the tea-baggers going to do? If they are anti-incumbent then neither candidate will get their votes.
It's no surprise Evan Bayh will probably face a tough election for his pansified approach to reform of any kind, even though the election one year ago should have put all doubt to rest in that quivering mind of his.
But to elect a Republican in the United States is tantamount to selling one's Soul to the Devil, and no one can walk away unscathed exhibiting not just their ignorance of right and wrong, but their complete lack of honor in the extreme.
Mike Pence would be a formidable challenge to Evan Bayh. Bayh's lack of a spine and lock step march with Obama will likely be his defeat. Pence is very articulate and conservative, which makes him a contrast. He'll no doubt have money from people around this country. He's definitely a much stronger candidate in IN than Scott Brown was in MA.
He should run and I believe he'll win.
As a former constituent of both men, I have to say that both are absolutely terrible. Bayh is a corporate shill, supporting endless wars and insurance oligarchies while preventing the social change he claims to support as a Dem. Pence is a conservative talking-point parrot, without an original thought or caring bone in his body, coasting on pro-life sentiment and an unengaged local electorate.
Whoever wins, Indiana continues to lose.
I don't live in Indiana but would gladly give some of my hard-earned $ to a Mike Pence run for the senate! Mike Pence is a true conservative and always has been. He'd get my vote. I am proud to say that my very first vote as an adult went to Ronald Reagan for President!
The only requirement to run for the U.S. Senate as a Republican is the ability to utter the word "NO". No original thought, ideas or desire to improve the nation are required. Pence is the perfect candidate then.

Please read. The Bayh name still carries a ton of weight in Indiana and he's won reelection by big margins every six years. And he'll keep winning Terre Haute, Evansville, Southbend, the Region, Indianapolis, and Lafayette provide he doesn't eat a baby at a campaign event. If Pence runs, he'll carry the Indianapolis suburbs and parts of his district; even Muncie and Fort Wayne will be in play.
There's a reason why Bayh keeps winning reelection- he's good at what he does and he represents his constituents. Mike Pence is a hack who makes a bad impression on anyone that's not far right.
And 2010 is going to be a phenomenal year for Indiana Democrats; Mitch Daniels is deeply unpopular in bellweather areas (i.e. Vigo County), Vi Simpson is going to make signifigant gains in the Senate, and a new generation of leaders has arisen to run for all state-level positions.
And in 2012, Baron Hill, Jon Weinzapfel, Roy Dominguez, or Mark Kruzan will make a wonderful candidate for governor.
Seriously, Bayh's "top tier" challenger at this point is John Hostettler, who lost spectacularly in IN-08 in 2006. I think it was the biggest loss of any incumbent that year. Get real.
OMG is all I could think of when I read the headline. He's the worst of the worst. I'm not crazy about Bayh--he definitely isn't lockstep with Obama as someone commented--but he's better than any Republican. He has to be conservative Dem to be elected from IN. I think and hope Aaron's comment is right on. Southern IN mostly will support Pence. From Indianapolis north (where most of the population is) is Bayh country.
You go Mike. The time is right.
We the people of this nation are really sick of what is going on in congress. There is a massive revolt in the making. Won't you please be a hero and start working with your colleagues to do the business of the people? Stop the nastiness and bickering and do our business.
Pence is the DEVIL! He is the absolute worst man I have ever come across and is an absolutely horrible congressman. He basically told me that gays and feminists will lead to the end of civilization.

The money will come, Rep. Pence from grass-roots conservatives across the country who have appreciated your stalwart, unwavering, unapologetic, explicit, and proven commitment to the Constitution and conservative principles.
The problem here is there isn't alot of difference between these two. Bayh has a D after his name but he really is a republican. Pence is a fool and is much closer to a tea bagger then most. I live in Indiana and a proud member of the democratic party, we must find a strong liberal dem. to run against Bayh and then stop Pence before he can even get started.
Bayh is out. I don't know if the people who are pro-Bayh are from Indiana or not, but I am. Hoosiers are tired of his own interest politics. His wife has made millions sitting on the board of insurance companies since he has been in the U.S. Senate. Eighty-five percent of his $12 million campaign fund has come from out of state. He no longer represents Hoosiers.
With that said, Pence needs to stay in the House where he has proven himself to be a leader and will have more responsibility after Nov. Marlin Stutzman is the most viable GOP candidate.
There are already four solid Republicans and one Tea Party leader turned conservative-constitutional politician vying for the GOP nod to take on Bayh this fall.
So far, Tea Party activist Richard Behney seems to have the broadest support amongst the grassroots Tea Party base - but no open polling has taken place. Three of the other four candidates keep trying to make inroads as "tea party loyalists" but only Behney has the credentials of organizing two major events in Indianapolis - and of starting the group that has become the largest 9.12 online patriot group in the 9.12 project.
The biggest problem the GOP faces in the Indiana Senate race is actually backing away from the fight until the voters make up their mind about who they want to challenge Bayh. The GOP could very well kill any chances of having grassroots support behind the candidate if they are being seen as "Pushing" a candidate in the race.
There is a world of difference (both politically and ethically) between the Jeffersonian John Hostettler and the neo-conservative Mike Pence. Fundamentally Hostettler holds to the views of limited federal government akin to our founding fathers and would work to scale back the federal government’s expansion into our lives, businesses, and culture.
