Romney Digs At Huckabee Over "Game Change"

By Reid Wilson

Among GOP WH contenders in '08, ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney (R) was perhaps the least popular. But, he insisted yesterday, he does have a soul.

A new book making headlines this week quotes several of Romney's rivals disparaging the ex-gov. In one passage, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) uses several explitives to describe him, while ex-NYC Gov. Rudy Giuliani (R) complains that Romney will "say anything" to get elected.

But none were worse than the criticism from ex-AR Gov. Mike Huckabee (R), who said he didn't "think Romney has a soul," according to "Game Change," the new look at the '08 campaign from journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann.

Appearing on Laura Ingraham's radio show Monday, Romney got in a few subtle digs of his own at Huckabee, who hosts a program on Fox News and remains a top contender if he decides to run for the WH again.

"I really don't feel that religion should play a part of a political campaign, and so I don't know that I would go there if I were he," Romney said of Huckabee. "He has a right to say whatever he'd like to say, but I frankly don't share the same sentiment and wish him well in whatever he's doing now. I hear he's got a great TV show."

Romney and Ingraham laughed, and the host joked that Romney was sure to be a frequent guest on Huckabee's program.

"I can confirm, Laura, that I do have a soul," Romney added.

Romney also said he thought most of the disparraging comments made about him were made in the heat of battle, and largely because he was winning at the time.

"When you get in the campaign, I'm sure people are animated about the opposition, and I think, at that time, I was doing pretty darn well," he said. "I have no hard feelings for" his fellow candidates.

Romney/Thune or Romney/Jindal!

Republicans have excellent choices for 2012!

Romney, McCain, and Giuliani have patched things up. As soon as Romney withdrew (after McCain won the winner-take-all Florida, California, and New York primaries) he did a tremendous job supporting Sen. McCain. I believe McCain and Romney actually have a kinship now.

And Romney paid Giuliani a very significant compliment a few months ago: speaking of Detroit, and its myriad problems, he said it needed a “Giuliani-style clean-up,” a reference to the former mayor’s success in New York City.

Huckabee is the only one who still harbors bad feelings.

He remained in the race far too long and only for his own ego.

Yes, Huckabee's true character revealed again and again. Good for Mitt Romney for playing the high card against his opponents during the elections. I'm not sure Huckabee can make it to "his heaven" with his remaining harbored feelings towards Romney.

Romney was always the clear leader. McCain and Huckabee (and to a lesser extent, Giuilani) "ganged up" to take him out of the race. It's significant that they had to combine forces to take Romney out. They all seemed to know that they didn't have a chance unless they acted together.

Romney made a mistake or two in the campaign, but overall I was impressed with him. To me, he was always dignified, even in the face of Huckabee's constantly dirty tactics.

I question whether some of Romney supporters have a soul -- and it has nothing to do with religion. It has to do with the vile, arrogant and hypocritical actions taken -- I suspect that is exactly what Huckabee meant.

Get over it -- okay.

I like Mike Huckabee as a Fox News TV show host but I will never vote for him for president.

A lot of bad feelings from many voters towards the nature of the 2008 primary due to the gang-up. In my state Florida, Gov. Crist played an especially crucial role in releasing an 11th hour endorsement of John McCain and on the heels of McCain's lie about Romney's alleged support of timetables in Iraq or any other place; this left no time to defend the comment, which was taken totally out of context in a GMA interview from over a year before the FL primary, and it gave McCain the narrow victory in FL. Had this gone the other way, Romney could've won the following Super Tuesday.

My point here is that Gov. Crist, who is doing a bad job as our governor, is trying to jump ship and become an entrenched US Senator. The problem for him is that we Florida Republicans recall, among his other transgressions, his seedy role in 2008 and are going to punish him in the primary, where he is now, at best, even with Marco Rubio. At one point Crist had a 30 point lead, then a few weeks later it was 15, and now a dead heat. Rubio has won 11 straw polls, which is all we've had to-date, including--this is delicious--the straw poll of Pinellas county, which is Crist's native county (he's from Saint Petersburg, which is across the bay from Tampa).

As far as Huckabee's brand of hypocritical faith (christianity or otherwise), hey I guess when you think God is on your side just because then you have sons who torture dogs, brandishing firearms as camp counselors, and you sit around and get fat playing guitars and spreading ill will to those against whom you hold petty grudges born of envy and spite. I wonder how he'll handle Palin taking some of his oxygen out of Fox.

For 2012, who knows what will happen, but I am hopeful for a Romney rerun. Ideally for me, it'd be either Romney/Petraeus or Petreaus/Romney. You never know, perhaps, if Rubio pulls off the upset, he'll have a mercurial rise and be the veep. Maybe Luis Fortuno. Paul Ryan would be great. But if today's ills persist to that tomorrow, then Mark Twain couldn't fictionalize a better ticket than Romney/Petraeus to renew America, competency, and optimisim.

I sure do like this Mike Huckabee...hope he decides to run in 2012.

Huckabee is fine playing music and hosting his TV show. But, I will NEVER vote for him for President. I don't trust him.

I don't care for Huckabee or Romney. Huckabee is unelectable and Romney will say anything to get elected, he's like the Republican version of John Kerry - not to mention he signed Romney-Care into law in Massachusetts. Personally, I would love to see Jim DeMint and Tom Coburn run.

I will gladly vote for Romney is Sara Palin doesn't run.

If we had a guy that had business credentials like Romney we would not be headed down the trail of the looney left. Romney's past in Mass. and his positions there are not mine but he reminds me of a salesman saying "What do I have to do to put you in this new Chevy?". I can live with that as long he wants to leave his electorate as satisfied customers on the way to balancing a budget and fiscal sanity.
I liked Huckabee until he went anti-Mormon in a really sleazy move to bait bigots against Romney and then hung on as a spoiler in the election. He hides who he is behind the smile and shucks.

LEAST popular?! According to who, exactly?

Close your eyes and say to yourself "President Huckabee." It can't be done without laughing. Huck's religious bias against Romney gave us McCain as the GOP candidate. We know how that turned out.

Romney's part of the problem.

He's G.W. Bush's 'compassionate conservatism' with a prettier face. When it comes to principles, Romney's are whatever seems to be popular.

How can anyone look at RomneyCare and his "campaign conservative conversion" and say this guy is the future of Republicans?

If you can, then the GOP needs to die the death forecast by Democrats.

Tell Clay that Jim Demint is an exemplary conservative and I could easily vote for him. But Demint was a full-throated Romney supporter. So your support for Demint and lack of support for Romney are incongruous. Look, if Jim says Romney is the best then it must be so. Jim can be trusted to tell the truth. One cannot support Demint but not Romney without sounding hypocritical.

Rudy Giuliani was the least favorite among republican primary voters in the early states. He was the first to drop out.
That's what happens when your not pro-life...nobody likes you.

I like Jim Demint, John Thune, and Mitt Romney.

I told my husband after what went down in Florida last year, that Giuliani, Thompson, niehter one really wanted to be the President they only wanted to help throw the race to McCain, Rudy only campaigned in Florida, and Fred was so lackluster and I know he is a better actor then that! As for Huckabee, I have seen him get downright vicious about Romney, and other people who he thinks might be a threat to him. I saw the way he tried to destroy Ann Coulter on one of his shows, he literally verbally attacked Ann, she was almost at a loss for words in the face of his verbal assault.
I would love to see Romney run again he is just what he needs, I am a Christian and his Morman faith does not bother me at all, I am more leary of Huckabee's kind of sort of faith!

Romney always takes the high road and exudes the grace and class of a President.

I firmly believe that were it not for Huckabee's antics and Crist's 11th hour endorsement of McCain in the Florida primary that Romney's lead would've held up and he would've won the Florida primary and been propelled to more wins in Super Tuesday and went on to be the nominee.

Once the economy tanked, Romney could've spoke with authority and likely would've won the election. Now we'd have President Romney who would've already restored our economy and prevented much of the job loss that is still occurring.

I hope he runs again and America gets another chance because Obama is clearly in over his head and has proven himself to be a strong leader.

I think Romney is the only politician not quoted in "Game Change" ripping on other people with racism and swears.

The thing I hate about politicians is that they speak out of all sides of their faces. I find it ironic that Romney takes heat for saying "anything to get elected" and he is the only one that seems to have a consistent and respectable message.

And that Huckabee is a piece of crap; he is just jealous of Romney; Romney has more money, better hair, better looks, better education, a better family, and a better religion. Huckabee can't smoke all that in one pipe.

Huckabee always has and always will be a backstabber! I would never give him the time of day! He stabbed Mitt many times in the back!

When Huckabee first entered the scene of the presidential elections I had interest in learning about him...the more I learned the less I liked about him. I saw his true character revealed when he took stabs at Romney at every given opportunity that was given him. It showed a lack of character in him that I detest to this day. The more I learn about Romney, the more he grows on me. Not sure I've every heard Romney stab other politicians given the opportunity. This shows me true weakness in leadership for Huckabee and true strength in leadership for Romney.

Of all these candidates I think it's Romney who stands out as someone who actually loves his country and is running to make things better. Some of the others just love themselves (Huck), while others actually DISlike the USA (Obama).

Mike Huckabee is very disengenious and I would never cast a vote for him. On the other hand Mitt Romney is a strong leader with a great resume. Mitt Romney has got what it takes to turn the Country around and then some. I want a President like Mitt Romney who is solid and honest. I am not praying for hope-change or Huckabee in 2012 I am praying for Mitt Romney!

ROMNEY / DeMINT in 2012!
A United Front!

I see this morning on Drudge where there is a Quinnipiac poll showing a tie between those who think McCain would've had the country in better shape and those who think Obama has.

I can't help but plea for Quinnipiac or Rasmussen or Gallup to conduct a poll on how many think Mitt Romney would have had the USA better off if nominated/elected versus the status quo of Obama.

2008 John,Mike and other candidate hate Mitt because they saw Mitt leadership,so John and Mike played bad card to defeat Mitt, but finally John and Mike were the loser and Mitt is the rising star.Republican got a good lesson and American people made a big mistake for the change we never known from inexperience Obama, his policies is not lead America to prosperity,it is lead America backward to Kenya's style. It's time to take back America for America,it's time for true America leader to lead America for prosperity, and so only Mitt is the right man for the right job,the right leader for the right country,Mitt Romney/Rick Santorum 2012.

Huckabee and Obama have a few things in common:

- Each of them give a great speech
- Neither of them has ever run a business
- Neither of them know how to cut taxes
- Neither of them want to keep criminals in jail
- Neither of them has a clue

I'd give the edge to Obama, who is far better educated than Huckabee

Mitt is the right guy. Hopefully by 2012 Huckabee can put his ego aside and stay away from the race. It was a real shame what happened in Iowa in 2008. We really do have Huckabee to thank for Mcain's Primary win. Romney/Patraeus 2012??

So, everyone realizes that Huckabee was not talking about Romney's religious affiliation but rather some of his political stances. Regardless, both of them need to get over it. They both lost, mainly because Fred Thompson weakened both of them at the wrong times in order to get his friend, John McCain, the nomination. Either way, get over it and move on.

1. There's a movement to radically change California government, by getting rid of career politicians and chopping their salaries in half. A group known as Citizens for California Reform wants to make the California legislature a part time time job, just like it was until 1966.

chukmaty, actually Huckabee didn't lose anything because of Fred or anyone else; Friar Huck was simply only ever a regional candidate as it pertains to his ability to win elections in a small number of geographically adjacent states.

Where he did hurt was among social conservatives, though, in all states; the vast majority of whom would've gone to Romney. Fred was a latecomer and an underperformer in all but South Carolina. His noncommittal candidacy was suspect all along and coincidentally, I'm sure, being a friend of McCain had nothing to do with anything. Rudy stated after the election that he had yielded his campaign out of deference to the candidacy of his pal John McCain after McCain rebounded well in New Hampshire. The Huck is just a selfish opportunist who stuck around to keep his face somewhat in the limelight (and giving noncampaign speeches to enrich his personal wealth along the way, amusingly) by opting to be McCain's wingman in the remaining states even though he had long been mathematically elminated. His refusal to bow out was unique in the field of Republicans and out of both greed and spite; very unchristian.

People realizing this was the reality of GOP 2008 and comparing notes is not a case where they need to be told by anyone to get over anything. As far as I can see, the only one who is not getting over anything from 2008 is Huckabee and his petty grievences -- just read his second to last book.

Leave it to Mitt to take the high road. Wilson writes that he was getting in his digs at Huckabee but that does not seem to be the case. Rather it seams Laura Ingraham was because she brought it up. No one has ever heard Romney disparage a single soul. Its just not in him to do such a thing. He is a gentleman to the core.

Romney/Demint in 2012!

A 2007 editorial in a Dallas newspaper predicted 2008 not to be Romney's year, but most likely 2012. The writer appears to have had the clairvoyance many failed to see in this man.

A resurgent Romney is poised to rescue the business of America as he did the Olympics, Staples, Dominoes, and MA. Do not underestimate this man's ability. If the USA can fully rebound, it will take someone like Romney to repair a broken nation.

My take on 2012.....

Sarah Palin - Nope....I'd love her as Energy Secretary but I'm sorry, if you're "boning up" on national security matters at 46 years old, that is dangerous.

Mitt Romney - Nope.....his flip-flop on the slaughter of the unborn shows that he'll play to whatever crowd he needs votes from. And his so-called "business expertise" amounts to hedge fund skullduggery. Oh yeah....his health care program in Massachusetts is a laugh as well. A wholesale sham if there ever was one.

Newt Gingrich - Nope.....plenty of intellect and understanding backed up by a consistent voting record and solid leadership. But Newt will be almost as polarizing as Palin, for different reasons. His controversial personal life is likely to be splattered throughout the campaign.

Mike Huckabee - Nope.....unapologetic and rock solid on his stand regarding abortion and Israel, and a good communicator. Derided 2 years ago when he quite correctly fingered Pakistan as a primary Mideast threat. But his high-profile commutations as Arkansas governor are crippling. And he'd have a tough time with the electoral map in the general anyway. Good TV show though.

Fred Thompson - Nope....just go back to sleep, Fred.

Sorry folks....IMO, the 2008 GOP field needs to be completely cleared. Whoever you supported in 2008, try to let go now because I don't think they are the best route to go in 2012.

I say we put forward some fresh blood and, by all means, avoid the "rock star" approach. We have one of those now who can't even find the Whitehouse toilet let alone deal with REALLY governing. Enough of the hype BS.

I'd be happy to see John Thune, Paul Ryan and Bobby Jindal make up the primary field and get it settled fast, hopefully without hammering the crap out of each other. Let the winner take the top of the ticket and then round it off with David Petraeus as VP.

A young RELIABLE Conservative like these 3 guys and General Petraeus as VP...IMO...eliminates the mainstream media's ability to start a food fight among 2008 leftovers, and presents a competant team that will absolutely hemmorrage independent voters away from Obama.

Think outside the box for 2012 folks!!

I'm surprised that the very first line of the article states that Romney may have been the least popular. From what I could tell, he was the most popular among Conservatives and many Republicans. He lost all the states that allowed Democrats to vote in the Republican primary and he lost WV due to Huckabee-McCain backroom collusion. It was after that that Romney knew he didn't have a chance among democrats and McCain-Huckabee collusion and made his departure speech to a very upset CPAC crowd.

I never could get behind the waffling of McCain who's only answer to conservatives was, "Shut up and fall in line." I never could get behind the little man that is Huckabee (who just so happens to have left a trail of murder and destruction since leaving his governor's office).

Oh jesus you will not belief this. My silly puppy simply just farted on my arm!? I mean what's the matter with that!? I nourish that thing and I receive this in exchange.
