CPAC's Winners And Losers
Conservatives young and old are headed home after 3 days of boistrous speeches, endowed with a renewed sense of optimism as they head toward electoral gains this Nov.
But some are leaving DC in better shape than others. Here, Hotline OnCall's winners and losers from CPAC '10:
WINNERS
The Tea Party Movement: Virtually every speaker paid homage to a movement that remains loosely defined, praising fiscal restraint and a renewed energy among activists protesting the Obama admin's policies. The media had fun interviewing the guy in the tri-cornered hat and "Don't Tread On Me" flag, but GOP leaders are doing their best to incorporate, and kowtow to, the movement. Anyone who can show they lead a local Tea Party group is leaving CPAC with an enormous sense of power, and the GOP is all too happy oblige.
Ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney: He didn't win the CPAC straw poll, but Romney came in second place to a contender no one believes is serious about running in WH'12 -- Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX). Romney gave a well-regarded speech that fired up the crowd more than most of his potential '12 rivals, and his showing, 3 times more than ex-AK Gov. Sarah Palin (R), demonstrates he still has a following among the influential group of activists.
Ex-FL House Speaker Marco Rubio: He kicked off the conference in front of a packed house, and he did one of the hardest things in politics; he met expectations. Rubio is the darling of a conservative movement bent as much on defeating moderate GOPers as on defeating Dems, and his Thursday speech cemented his standing as the most likely conservative to beat FL Gov. Charlie Crist (R), who activists see as a centrist.
The Bush Admin: Last year, it was hard to find a speech in which the newly-former pres. or his team were mentioned. Now, while polls don't show a dramatic reversal in Bush's popularity or in that of ex-VP Dick Cheney, at least some GOPers, like Romney, publicly defended the old guard. Cheney's surprise appearance on Thursday even got a standing ovation. CPAC speakers did bash Bush's spending policies, but they don't see him as the albatross he once was.
Calvin Coolidge: We kid, we kid. The nation's 30th pres. is a big favorite of Fox News host Glenn Beck, one of the real winners at this year's CPAC. Beck is seen as on par with Rush Limbaugh, according to the CPAC straw poll, which has to be good news for his marketing team, and his Saturday p.m. speech brought the crowd to its feet repeatedly -- even though he mentioned vomit 4 times.
After the jump, the losers at this week's confab.
LOSERS
The CPAC Straw Poll: Paul took 31% of the vote, to best Romney's 22%. No one takes Paul seriously as a candidate in '12 -- ex-NM Gov. Gary Johnson (R) is trying to claim his mantle (check back Monday for our interview with Johnson) -- and his win allows other contenders to portray this year's ballot as meaningless.
The GOP: What the straw poll did show is that many conservatives aren't happy with the GOP. RNC chair Michael Steele's fav/unfav rating is upside down, and 37% say they view GOP leadership in Congress unfavorably too. Many speeches included reminders that the GOP had its chance and lost power because of excess spending. If anything, CPAC showed the GOP is courting the Tea Party movement, but Tea Partiers aren't sold yet.
MN Gov. Tim Pawlenty: TPaw finished next to last, just ahead of Crist, in the '09 CPAC straw poll, and he finished 4th, with just 6%, this year. Students greeted Pawlenty when he showed up on Thursday, but his Friday speech didn't excite the crowd as much as Romney's, ex-Speaker Newt Gingrich's or even Rep. Mike Pence's did. The knock on Pawlenty has always been that he doesn't light a fire in many activists, and this year's speech showed he hasn't gotten over that drawback yet.

It seems very interesting that in this article you didn't put Ron Paul under the "Winners" column, considering he won the straw poll. Speaking of the straw poll, if you actually did some research, you would have seen that more people voted in the straw poll this year than any other year at CPAC, by over a 40% increase in ballots. How is Ron Paul nor a serious candidate? He was the person who started the Tea Party movement over 2 years ago during his presidential campaign, when he set a single-day record for fundraising. Also, Ron Paul was the only true conservative that spoke at CPAC. Have you ever looked at his voting record? His voting record reflects one of a paleoconservative, such as former Senator Robert Taft (R) who is nicknamed "Mr. Republican", and is widely considered to be one of the 5 most influential Senators in American history. You tried your best to publish another neocon hitjob against Ron Paul, but it is an utter failure. This article is a disgrace to "journalism", and reflects an extreme elitist, insider mentality. RON PAUL 2012, End the Federal Reserve.
Reality, Ron Paul is the best candidate for a Presidency, which would save America! The man is a Constitutionalist, honest and very hard working and dedicated, loves America with his heart not just words of the mind! He knows how to get the job done, just as he got, “Audit the Fed,” passed! If you want more of what you've got, no business as usual, via the two party Elitist paradyne vote Romney or Huckabee, Gingrich, courtesy of the establishment Republicans and RINOs’, and should you waste your vote on Palin – a running mate that was chosen by John McCain, Obama will get a second term! Palin, will split your votes, very weak and is not able to be a president!
Glenn Beck gave one of the best speeches I have ever heard regarding party politics. No rhetoric, no pointing fingers, fabulous history lesson and placing the blame on both parties where it belongs! He listed problems, solutions, and factual information, delivered with fervor, enthusiasm, humor and good old fashion common sense. Politicians take a lesson on how to deliver a speech from Glenn Beck!
First get out of the way the loony Ron Paul win. He excites the young and naive college student set. The voting was a bit of a hassle at CPAC, you had to find a booth and vote and most adults aren't interested in doing and the college students get all fired up about an issue much as Obama's college set did. If the AGE of the voters was taken I am sure I would be right.
Next, Glenn Beck says what I think. How can a fringe element of anti-Americans have set the agenda for so long? Becuase they take advantage of our goodness. They say, "Stop using Native American sports team names." and we say, "Well, sure, why not, we don't want to be mean." Then they say, "Stop wearing fur." and we say, "Sure, why not, we don't mean to offend." And so it goes, UNTIL IT IS GONE! Stop the kowtowing to political correctness and take America back!
Every time I see blogs as good as this I KNOW I should stop surfing and start working on mine!
I second your first poster. Obviously, Ron Paul is a 'winner' from this weekend. Or do you realistically pretend he LOST influence?
It is clear from Ann Coulter going out of her way to underline that the only thing she disagrees with Paul on is foreign policy, that he is shaking people up in their assumptions. If that wasn't enough to convince people, Beck cribbing the entire substance of his speech (not the show parts) from Ron Paul's CPAC speech should convince anyone, from his focus on Woodrow Wilson (Ron Paul's) to even his statement that you need to look at foreign policy (Ron Paul's).
Such is the candidate partisanship that the most ironic point is that while Ron Paul's wins was bood by establishment types, Beck's speech, drawn in substance from Ron Paul's positions, was cheered.
Lucky for Paul, for him it is all about spreading IDEAS not winning races.
I'd say that made him the hands down winner.
Let me take ONE GUESS about the authors of this Blog post by Reid Wilson and Felicia Sonmez... Mitt Romney Supporters?
Typical biased nonsense and it's blatantly obvious with the well placed 'Mitt Romney' under the 'WINNER' category, even though he did worst than last year and dropped in the votes/poll. That alone would have Mandate Mitt Romney as a Disappointment AND should be in the LOSER category.
I see you 2 'LOSERS' just happen to marginalize Ron Paul the WINNER of CPAC 2010 with 31% of the vote, but a nicely placed SNIPE about him, after Mitt Romney's BOLD TEXT. Then, look how Ron Paul was mentioned/marginalized and just miraculously included in the Loser section.
Another BIAS POS Blog by HACKS... Did Romney Pay for your "Fantavision" Writeup?
I'm sure if Mitt won... it would be MANDATED for all Republicans to Unite behind the Corporate Raider. Oh this Liberal RINO must be backed no matter what the failures of the Manchurian Mitt may be.
Go ahead with your push of Mitt who consults Lawyers on Foreign wars and Cheating Whispers in Presidential Debates.
You Two NEOCON OLD RINO Hacks are PATHETIC!
PS: Since you 2 have Romney ties... why not cover how Mitt destroyed corporations and sent 10,000's of job to either the unemployment lines or overseas.
If Ron Paul wants to do some good for America he needs to do it by supporting candidates who can beat Obama.
Otherwise, all Paul, Palin, Pawlenty, and Huckabee do is assure a second term to Obama.
Rob- It's interesting that write off this year's straw poll as being flooded with "young and naive" students. You do realize that this is the same straw poll that is conducted every year at CPAC (and that Mitt Romney has one three times in a row, but lost by nearly 10% this year), and that students' votes count just as much as your own, right?
This entire post looses a lot of credibility by putting the Bush administration as a winner but not Ron Paul. The Bush administration was criticized many many times. Just because they're getting attention doesn't mean its good intention. It's important to note the huge divide at CPAC between the Ron Paul, libertarian, consistent conservatives, and the neocons. Some neocons got up and left during Ron Paul's speech, and many of them booed when Ron Paul swept the poll. On the other side, Judge Napalitano made one of my favorite comments of the weekend when he referenced Dick Cheney's appearance: (paraphrased) "The people standing in cheering in that room don't deserve to be in this building".
There were two groups at CPAC this year. I think it's clear which side your on, Reid Wilson, Felicia Sonmez, and Rob. And I hope you can figure out which side I'm on.
The fact that Ron Paul has been standing on what the Tea Party believes in, that is LESS Government and the associated burden of the taxes, is EXACTLY why you should take him seriously. The blanket generalization that "no-one" takes him seriously is a BIG mistake. A lot MORE people are taking him seriously now, and honestly, we can thank the Excess of Pelosi, Reid and Obama for that relevance he is gaining for a very real reason!
You just don't have the Moral Courage to give him Credit.
In my mind, Calvin Coolidge is our most underrated president. We have never had a president more focused and effective in carrying out his program. He is rightly remembered as the president who brought the American people a period unprecedented prosperity and peace. He presided over one of the most vital and exciting decade in the American history. Coolidge was able to reduce a massive WWI debt and simultaneously cut taxes, eliminating them for most working folk. He also downsized a bloated Federal establishment, making it work efficiently and effectively. On the international front, his Administration assisted in the successful restoration of the international gold standard, which helped to revive world trade. Much of the success of his fiscal program was due to having the newly created Bureau of the Budget under his direct control. He and the Budget Director made, as they put it, every dollar sweat. He also made use of the new medium of the radio to report directly to American people twice a year on the fiscal state of the government, which gained him public support against Congressional spenders, of which, as now, there were many. The situation we faced today calls for another Coolidge: a man or women who can balance the books and make the government work efficiently and effectively once more.
JL, I don't know of anyone who would disagree with you on Coolidge. The only issue up for debate is "who" is the next Coolidge? Is it Paul? I'm just wary of his position on international issues. As a Christian, my personal position is that we need to be a strong friend and supporter of Israel. I'm not convinced that Paul would be willing to defend Israel.

Ummm...maybe I missed it or perhaps you made an editing error, but obviously the biggest winner was Ron Paul. He gave a rousing speech to one of the largest and most enthusiastic crowds in the entire convention.
Most impressively, Ron won the Presidential straw poll by the most commanding margin in years, and received more votes than any other candidate in the history of the poll. Romney's well-heeled machine was enough to win him the previous 3 years, but just couldn't compete with the outpouring of support for Paul in 2010.
Very strange that that article missed all that.
Ron Paul IS my voice!
I don't no how this article got posted but it is terrible. NOT SERIOUS...SO ITS ONLY SERIOUS WHEN A NEO-CON SHILL LIKE ROMNEY WINS. YOU MAKE ME LAUGH RON PAUL 2012 YOU CANT BEAT US THIS TIME!!!!!!!!!!!
After hearing the straw poll results, I have lost all faith in the members at cpac. Either that or the poll was misreported. Seems allot of discontented libs are turning into Ron Paul supporters in an attempt to hijack the movement. It's really their last stand. They are heard saying very divisive loud statements like, "Well ron paul IS the original tea party movement!!"
That kind of nonsense talk comes from liberals, not conservatives. NO ONE owns the tea party movement. Not even Ron Paul.
Most true conservatives have a very hard time supporting paul for president. A fine house member he makes, but never in my wildest dreams would he get my vote for president. Ron paul on the ticket is a sure win for an obama second term and the libs know it. Thats is why you see them flocking to Paul's defense in droves.
The libs are going to become more manipulative and underhanded than we have seen before. It is a mistake to believe they will be all out in the open now that they have been revealed by obama to be socialist freaks. Watch out for Paul supporters in sheep's clothing.
Who will build the roads and schools and staff the courts and city halls and rein in the corporations in Libertarian World?
Less Government. Can anyone name one Republican President that has done this.
Can anyone name one Republican President that made the deficit smaller in the last 40 years.
Can anyone name one Republican President that balanced the budget and did not leave our kids with trillions of debt.
Your polices are a myth. The country was almost destroyed in 8 years when your polices were in effect.
Your going to get your smaller Govt but the reason your going to get it is because the GOP and their Conservative polices have raised the debt level every time your in the WH to the point the country is broke.
You would think you would all be Clinton fans. He only balanced the budget while adding 20 mil jobs. Yet you hate him. Remember when you guys were arguing that debt was good and surpluses were bad.
We can't afford most programs because your polices blew a surplus and added more debt in 8 yeas than all Presidents combined in our history.
Your policies are a myth.
You guys didn't want to pay for a war on lies.
You guys didn't want to pay for giving the tax cuts to the rich.
You guys didn't want to pay for your medicare expansion.
Every time your in power you use our tax dollars like a 16 year old chick with a credit card.
Actions speak louder than words.
If your unhappy with the state of the country you have no one to blame but yourselves.
Yet you want to be back in power.
To do what.
Finish us off.
Ron Paul is not considered a winner, because the GOP doesn't want him. Wake up. Tea Baggers are going to be used by the GOP and it is a pleasure to watch. The GOP uses the right to lifers and they still haven't caught on.
If (and that's a big if) the Dems pass health care and the economy improves (no matter how slowy), the GOP will not pick up as many seats as they think.
I find it so hard to believe that the frustration many voters feel would send them back to the GOP when they are the ones who created this mess. The GOP will do nothing to improve the life of average Americans.
I really wonder, after watching and listening to Teapartiers throw one Republican president after another under the bus (really, Glen-Hoover was a progressive?), how St Ronnie would fare with the current CPAC crowd- he had the largest tax increase in history, spent like a drunken sailor, negotiated arms agreements with the Soviets, cut and run from Lebanon, and sold weapons to terrorists in Iran.
Teapartiers may embrace GWB (another one who spent like a drunken sailor), but where is the fiscal restraint they all talk about?
@shark breath
You seem to have forgotten how our government works. No matter how much he may have claimed to, no president balances the budget: Congress does. Clinton is given a lot of credit leaving office with a budget surplus. Who was it that insisted on passing balanced budgets during the 1990's? The Republican-controlled Congress.
"After the jump, the losers at this week's confab."
You forgot the biggest bunch of losers: The American people. Because if these nut jobs ever manage to con their way back into power, we're truly f*cked.
All you Beck Dittoheads:
Start naming programs to eliminate.
Until you're willing to "go there" you can basically just shut up.
