Linder To Retire

Rep. John Linder (R-GA) will retire at the end of this term, according to local media reports, finishing an 18-year career notable for a rough stint as chair of the NRCC.

Linder, who represents a solidly GOP district on the northeastern outskirts of Atlanta, has served in public office since winning a seat in the GA House in '74. After winning his House seat in '92 by narrow 51%-49% margin, he never faced a serious challenge again.

A longtime ally of ex-Speaker Newt Gingrich, Linder took over the NRCC in during the '98 cycle, when Gingrich was speaker. But the public sided with Bill Clinton after the GOP Congress impeached him, and GOPers lost 5 sets. Shortly after the election, Gingrich resgned, and Linder lost the NRCC chairmanship to then-Rep. Tom Davis.

Linder is a hero of the anti-tax crowd, though, and his FairTax proposal was at the center of ex-AR Gov. Mike Huckabee's (R) WH'08 campaign platform.

GOPers should have little trouble keeping Linder's seat, based around Gwinnett Co. The 7th district gave Pres. Obama just 39% of the vote in '08.

Linder becomes the 20th member of the House GOP Conference to say he will not run for another term. 6 GOPers are running for Senate, 6 more for other offices in their home states and 8 -- including Linder -- have decided to retire rather than seek another 2 year term. So far, 15 Dems have said they will retire, and another safe seat once held by Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL) remains open following his resignation.

This reporter should be ashamed of his lack of professionalism, balance and fairness.

Using loaded words to advance your agenda isn't new, but always smells up the room in which readers have to step over the attempt to sway opinions in a news article.

Proponents of the FAIR TAX, including Linder, are not "anti-tax". Shifting the tax burden from the socialist design it has now is "change"...but not, apparently the change Reid wants.

No doubt this reporter writes that Americans who want secure borders are "anti-immigration" and those who take care to not over-feed our lawns are "anti-fertilizer."

Reid is clearly "anti-fairness."

Yuck.

Fair Tax is a misnomer. It is a fake name that is used to make the poor and working classes pay a greater burden then the upper middle and upper classes. Who's anti-fairness now?

You on the right keep pushing this word: socialist... hmmmm.... Well, we already have a TON of socialist-like programs... some of which have been instituted by REPUBLICANS: NCLB, Social Security, public universities, public schools, SCHIP, interstate highways and all other roads, GI Bill, USPS, NASA, NATSB, DMV... and it goes on and on. Tell me, do you really want a country led by corporate entities? Don't you see what they have already done with health care? The financial system?

How about some balance? Or are you against that too? Tell me, is there anything the conservatives in this country are FOR except for simple selfish egotism?

GOOD FOR YOU, "PHILIP!" MY SENTIMENTS EXACTLY! THE GOP HARDCORE CONSERVATIVES MAIN AGENDA IS THE FALL OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND THE FAILING OF THIS ADMINISTRATION; THEY ARE UNABASHEDLY SHAMELESS AND HYPOCRITICAL. THOSE OF YOU WHO RESIDE ON MAIN STREET AND THINK THAT THEY ARE LOOKING OUT FOR YOUR BEST INTEREST ARE IN A SELF-INDUCED COMA. BIG BUSINESS, NOT MAIN STREET IS THEIR PRIME OBJECTIVE. WAKE UP AMERICA BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!

P.S. TO "D.A. KING": "REID IS CLEARLY ANTI-FAIRNESS?" "YUK" TO YOU AND YOUR OVERLOADED RIDICULES COMMENT!

Hey, any way we could get together for some advertising efforts?

Hey... It looks like there's a problem

The first comment is on the money. Most of us ( I am an independent) who pay attention are hip to the little tricks "journalists" play whe reprting the news.

Phillip is a typicallib: The reporter editorializes and because Phillip's leftie agenda is served, King is the bad guy. Too funny - too common. Interesting list of "socialist like programs there Phillip. What are you...11 yrs old?

"FairTax" is just a redistribution of wealth from the lower and middle classes to the wealthy.

The name, as pointed out above, is an Orwellian joke. "FairTax" is just another paid-for, poll-tested Frank Luntz talking point much like:

Clear Skies Initiative
No Child Left Behind
Operation Iraqi Liberation
Government Takeover
Death Panels
etc...

Just take the Republican Orwellian name and flip the meaning to be the exact opposite and there you have the Republican Agenda.
