GOP Leaders Signal Support For Repeal
Updated with Boehner's statement
Senate Min. Leader Mitch McConnell and House Min. Leader John Boehner both signaled support for at least some part of a GOP-led move to repeal health care legislation today, suggesting the GOP will run on the issue in the fall campaign.
"I can tell you with the campaign that will continue with the American people, I think the slogan will be 'Repeal and Replace,'" McConnell told reporters after a weekly lunch with fellow members of the GOP Conference.
In a statement following Pres. Obama's bill signing today, Boehner added: "Republicans will continue to stand on principle, hold President Obama accountable for his promises, and fight to repeal this government takeover of health care so we can start over on common-sense reforms that lower costs for families and small businesses."
They are the first 2 members of GOP leadership to hint at embracing a repeal move. Until today, GOPers have been hesitant to support such a move, worrying Dems will tag them for opposing the more popular parts of the bill, and several members of House leadership have suggested a partial repeal while keeping some more popular sections of the bill intact.
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) has introduced a measure to repeal health care legislation. In the House, Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), Steve King (R-IA), Bob Inglis (R-SC) and Todd Tiahrt (R-KS) have introduced a similar bill aimed at reversing the new law.
McConnell introduced DeMint's bill under a Senate rule that allows it to immediately be placed on the upper chamber's calendar.
In a speech on the Senate floor, McConnell cited Dems' ebullient mood at the bill-signing ceremony today at the WH. He said Dems' moment of celebration won't last long.
"The fact is, this bill spends $2.6 trillion dollars at a time of near double digit inflation while putting the real problem off for another day. It kicks the can down the road," McConnell said on the floor. "So Democrats here in Washington can celebrate all they want. But that celebration is going to be short-lived."
Asked after his meeting with fellow Conference members, McConnell declined to describe what sorts of amendments his party will offer on the floor this week. The Senate begins debating the reconciliation bill the House passed late Sunday evening.

Please reconsider your stand on health care. The country needs this. I know you have good health care but those who don't need it.
The new healthcare law will save lives.
Democratic and Republican lives.
By the next election season, the Republican candidates will be bringing attention towards a non-issue that the general American public have accepted and moved-on. It's a bit silly if this holds up.
This bill needs to be repealed! We need to start over and fix only what is broken. This bill will destroy liberty, run the country into bankruptcy with its pork and illicit paybacks for yes votes and has little to do with health care, and it totally disregards the will of the majority of the people. We'll end up with rationed care which not only won't save lives but will cost them. This bill is socialism to the max. Metaphorically speaking, everyone will get a teeny piece of the chicken, but no one will have their hunger met. Trash it. Start over, and stop this purely communistic government that stomps on the Constitution and will be the downfall of this country. Stop being afraid of what they say, Republicans. Represent the people!!! We voted for you so that you will stand up for freedom. Do it!
Good post, there's a few on a similar subject kicking around right now. This is one of the better written ones though.
Does healthcare costs need to be addressed? Certainly ! But this bill is not about that, it's about expanding the size and power of government and the degree of intrusion by that government in the personal lives of the citizens of this country. The mish-mash of issues included in this bill is nothing more than an attempt to obscure the obvious science fiction math that purportedly shows that the bill will reduce the deficit. If you believe that, then you will believe any fairy tale. This bill is literally an Obamanation.
I agree healthcare is very expensive but at least we have healthcare now. (And a lot of those without healthcare have money for what they want it is just they don't want to spend the money for it.) I think with this new bill we will be broke and have no healthcare at all. I don't think this has been about healthcare at all it is about power and control of the Democrats. I hope it can be repealed and changes made. The people of America were not represented by their Congressmen and women. They did not listen to the people. Think about what this is going to do to our children and grandchildren!
The GOP has my support on this one. This monstrosity is going to destroy this already broke country. It needs repealed as soon as possible.
GO REPUBS!! NO HEALTH CONTROL BILLL. People this is a CONTROL BILL--against OUR FREEDOM!!How can u miss this??Wake up--AMerica--it is CONTROL Period!
Good reads above. I've never been very concerened regarding our country's politics. However, like most of the working folks in this country, I am suddenly becoming very concerned towards the direction in which our country is now being lead. I have awakenned!!! This entire radical left wing corrupt-communist mob is striking deep into my patriotic bloodline. I know that this healthcare reform is without a doubt an intent to break our country from the inside out rather than the outside in. This thug of a president and his "CZARS" are intentionally trying to collapse our entire financial system. They will then attempt to legalize illegal aliens (30 million) for the sake of more supporting votes. If this happens we will be in dire straights (Like we're not now). Please don't be naive. The evidence has already presented itself. This is only the first step towards a fallen America. Say YES to the repeal of this healthcare takeover. Support the GOP in every way you can think of. Email friends and family, place flyers on doors, talk to friends about what you know etc. We have stood silent for way too long. This is now our time to fight for our country just as our forefathers did before us. Let us rise, have a voice of truth and fight the good fight!!! God Bless America!!! YES, GO REPUBLICANS!!! Let's take it back!!! Let's take out the MOB!!!
I got tired googling for this info for a while today and I’m so glad that you have released this. Though it took me a long time to find your blogpost, I’m just relieved I did. I have already added it to my favorites! Thank you again for posting this. I have also have a site on how to get rid of cellulite and it would be great if you could read my post and post your feedback on the article! Thanks,Angela Fieldman
This is not about reform. Look at Massachusetts. It's bankrupt thanks to a near identical system of compulsory insurance and covering of 440,000 people. It was projected to cost 88 million but instead wound up costing 4 billion. Not ONE government program has ever been successfull at lowering cost for anything. Health care costs will soar, insurance premiums will soar, and crushing taxes will be imposed on already struggling medium to large scale businesses. This needs to be repealed.
I have been searching for a nice remedy to help me get to sleep too. Melatonin has bad side effects. I read about Calms Forte 4 Kids. That link goes to a review. You think its as good as they say?
