Crist, Rubio Close In 3-Way Race

FL Gov. Charlie Crist (R) and ex-House Speaker Marco Rubio (R) would be tied in a three-way contest if Crist bolts the GOP in order to run as an independent candidate, according to a new survey.

The Quinnipiac Univ. poll surveyed 1,250 FL voters between April 8-13 for a margin of error of +/- 2.8%. A subsample of 497 GOPers had a margin of error of +/- 4.4%. Crist and Rubio were tested against Rep. Kendrick Meek (D).

GOP PRIMARY ELECTION MATCHUP
Rubio 56 (+9 from last, Jan. 26)
Crist 33 (-11)

GENERAL ELECTION MATCHUPS
Crist 48 (+0) Rubio 42 (-2)
Meek 34 (-2) Meek 38 (+3)

Crist 32
Rubio 30
Meek 24

Crist has a clear path to victory if he does run as an independent. Dems and indies both give him better approval ratings than GOPers do, and both give him a better fav/unfav ratio. About 4 in 10 voters don't know enough about Rubio to rate him, while three quarters of FL voters don't know Meek at all.

FAV/UNFAV
         All GOP Dem Ind
Crist 48/35 49/42 50/30 48/33
Rubio 36/22 67/ 7 13/34 32/21
Meek 18/ 8 5/17 34/ 4 15/ 7

But Crist's path to victory, if he runs as an independent, also opens the door for Meek. Meek had $3.3M in the bank at the end of the year -- we haven't seen his numbers so far this quarter -- which gives him the opportunity to carve out a niche among Dem voters. If Meek becomes better-known among FL voters, he could win a seat he wouldn't otherwise have a shot at in a 2-way race.

Run as an Independent or as a blue dog Dem Governor Christ!

ANYTHING but a teabagger!!!

The press release from the Quinnipiac University poll showing Crist as the leader was incorrect. (on purpose?)

"If Crist were to file as an independent for the general election, he would get 32 percent of the vote, compared to Rubio's 30 percent and Meeks 24 percent."

""In a three-way general election:

Crist would get 30 percent of Republicans, 27 percent of Democrats and 38 percent of independent voters;

Rubio would receive 64 percent of GOP votes, 5 percent from Democrats and 29 percent of independents:

Meek, a congressman from South Florida, would get 55 percent of Democratic votes, 15 percent of independents and no Republicans.""

Add it up yourself, these percentile totals show Rubio with 98, Crist with 95 and Meek with 70 out of a possible 300% (the balance DK/NA)

That equates to Rubio at 32.6%, Crist at 31.6% and Meek at 23.3% of the vote in a three-way race.

You can see question 7 on the chart at Quinnipiacs site:

Someone I work with visits your blog frequently and recommended it to me to read also. The writing style is great and the content is interesting. Thanks for the insight you provide the readers!

Maxwell, you're an idiot. Please consider that Dems/GOP/Independents are not an even 33.3%/33.3%/33.3% split in Florida. Put your conspiracy theories away and go pick up a statistics textbook.

You simply cannot make up stuff about how dumb Teabaggers are. Thanks Maxwell!

You cannnot add up the percentage points from three subgroupings and simply divide by three. Have you ever heard of the statistical concept of the weighted average?

We are in big trouble if these mindless fools ever achieve power.

Advantageously, the article is actually the best on this deserving issue. I fit in with your conclusions and will thirstily look forward to your future updates. Saying thanks will not just be adequate, for the wonderful lucidity in your journalism.

That is some inspirational stuff. Never knew that opinions could be this varied. Thanks for all the enthusiasm to offer such helpful information here.

How come this blog is not in the nikon directory? Would you mind if i put it on there. I don't know if i can but im going to try

Charlie Crist has absolutely destroyed this State. We need a guy like Rubio. Don't get me wrong. 6, maybe 8, years from now Rubio will be tainted and damaged political goods. But that will make him a perfect presidential candidate. For now he still has hopes to turn this state around from a pure political perspective.
