Tea Party Largely Older, Whiter, Male

The Tea Party movement is comprised of a coalition that is more likely to be male, older and GOPer, loosely united under the banner of economic conservatism, according to an analysis released yesterday by a right-leaning research firm.

The Winston Group conducted 3 national surveys over the winter -- one in each Dec., Jan. and Feb. -- to find out who Tea Party members are and what drives them. Over the course of the surveys, they found that more than half (58%) IDed themselves as GOPers, with 28% claiming to be indies and 13% Dems. But 65% IDed themselves as conservatives, while 26% said they were moderates.

Tea Partiers also skewed older and male. Of those associated with the Tea Party, 56% were male, compared to 48% of the electorate as a whole. Just 14% were between the ages of 18-34, while 20% of all voters are under 35.

And Tea Partiers are also more avid consumers of Fox News and other conservative media. Nearly half of Tea Party members in the Feb. survey named Fox as one of their two major sources of news, while the overall electorate was actually more likely to name CNN (21%-18%).

As for their platform, Tea Partiers in a Feb. survey were more than twice as likely as the overall electorate to list the deficit and gov't spending as their top issue -- though, in a Jan. poll, they were just as likely to choose "reducing unemployment to 5%" as being more important than "balancing the budget".

The demographic information was from aggregated from the 3 surveys. There were, in total, 511 respondents IDing themselves as both registered voters and Tea Party members. Those figures carry a margin of error of +/- 4.3%.

For more from the Winston Group's study, check out the memo outlining their findings.

Recently the TEA Party agreed that thier name does not reflect thier roots enough. They would like people to know where they are coming from and who they are. So I have proposed a name change from Taxed Enough Already to

White American Christians Killing Taxes

Or just plain wackt for short

Wow, Beno, I'd say you just changed the course of human history.

So what? The opposition is made up of Democrats, Socialists, Communists, Nazis, and other sorted radical idiots.

This would make some sense since older white males have been hit particularly hard with obama's failure in dealing with unemployment. There are also a lot of women who often are the keepers of the checkbook. They know from real life experience that obama's "hope & change" style math is a fraud directed at the stupid.

Why would anyone give this article any credence when they read the last line?

Always keep in mind the media lie.

"...And Tea Partiers are also more avid consumers of Fox News and other conservative media..."

Um, will someone please correct this canard. Fox News is not "conservative media." They are mainstream media. No other justification can explain their ratings.

And, one day, if a "conservative media" outlet were actually allowed to exist, it might take positions like;

Enforce our borders.

End all non-white, non-Christian immigration.

Reverse all commitments to "diversity". (Respect the population we ARE, not the one GOVERNMEDIA wish us to become...)

English only in USA

End to all foreign aid.

Bring all US troops home.

End to IRS, HSA, and most of the current federal gummint.

End to all income and property taxes.

Reverse the anti-white population and cultural trends.

Grant full and equal rights to white-citizens, including the right to assembly and self-determination.

Point being, there is NO CONSERVATIVE MEDIA. There's a anti-white, liberal media pretending to be mainstream. And there's a pro-diversity, mainstream media stereotyped as conservative.

Wake-up white America..!

So, what's the point? Do they have a 'SKEW' on ACORN? Isn't ACORN mostly FAT, BLACK, and NEVER HAD A JOB IN THEIR LIFE? Let's get a 'SKEW' on the PRISON POPULATION. Or GANG MEMBERSHIP. Or DRUG DEALERS.
Whats that? You don't do that kinda stuff?
What a surprise.

The headline is just plain wrong. There are an abundance of articles describing Tea Parties as majority female. Mr. Shepard, stop only talking to your friends, reading nothing but faxes that are sent to you at your desk, and talking only to Democrats. Do some of your own research for a change. Even the AP has articles describing Tea Parties as majority female. When the headline is this far off, nothing else in the article can be trusted.

"Wake-up white America..! "

That says it all.

You racist Republicans are disgusting. Go back to the 19th Century and stay there.

I suppose most of those 'white, older males' were job holders most of their lives versus the riff raff that never wanted or bothered to get a job. And when one has a lying nincompoop in the WH it is not surprising that they are upset. Perhaps they do not want their children winding up taking handouts from the government as some who prefer living like that for generations!
After all, Geithner's ponzi scheme is going to implode very shortly.
Cash for clunkers, show me one person who got money refunded, "we are backed up with paperwork"!
Refund for first time home buyers, show me one person who got their money refunded. " We are back logged with paper work".
Go figure where this 'health care' is going to take us, especially when the Liar in chief cannot even explain it NOW!

I can assure you my wife and daughter aren't "older white males". And I can also assure you that it wasn't just, "older white males" that crushed Creigh Deeds in Virginia, John Corzine in New Jersey, and Martha Coakley in Massachusetts.

Since they all seem to pay federal income tax, one would expect them to come from the 50% of the population that falls into that category--and is predominantly white.

It's my culture man. As a euro-American I'm descended from the white men who had a fanatical attachment to the notion of their liberty and rights. This is a culturally specific and historically unique ethnic identity which today is reduced to "white" but not long ago was more specifically known as anglo-saxon. Added to this historical love of liberty amongst "Englishmen" is the anti-authoritarian streak of the Scots-Presbyterian and the reckless rebelliousness of the Irish. It happens that these attitudes were often assimilated by the later arriving Europeans of latinate or Slavic origin. But however it may be, now that we are a thoroughly multicultural society, it should be recognized that a love of liberty and an attachment to "innate" rights are a core cultural identifier of most white males. Hence their attachment to the rattlesnake flag with its "Don't tread on Me" motto.
In short hand, these are the fat, bald white guys who cried at the end of Braveheart.
The problem with attacking them and their strongly held beliefs is that the are the most productive segement of society, and the are also its most heavily armed.
If you read a bit of history you may also conclude that they are adverse to being bullied. As an early English governor of the Jamestown colony reported back to his royal masters in London " They will not bow, and the place firearms in their sons' hands from the earliest age."
Don't you just love being an American?

This whole article and "poll" (like most) is a joke. It is obvious political spin in order to make it look bad. The truth is that each TEA party is different depending on where they are located. If anything I've seen more females involved and most of them are probably in their 30s, 40s and 50s. This is just more spin. And the leftist racists whose policies hurt people of color more than anything are trying to hold onto their dependents so they can keep their votes. They don't want them to realize the left has been lying to them for over 40 years.

As an almost 80 year old great grandmother,I believe anyone with any common sense could see why the conservative patriot of today is usually more mature that the pants dragging rappers of today. We grew up during much tougher times than today, but since we had grown up with a strong love of country and the freedoms it afforded us, plus a strong work ethic, a strong belief in God and His plan for us, it is only natural for us to oppose a socialistic takeover of our great nation. I am looking forward to November.

"usually more mature that the pants dragging rappers of today"

It is sad that someone who is almost old enough to remember what it was like for women to not be able to vote in this country will so readily denigrate an entire race based on a few bad examples.

Shame on you Dixie. Being old is no excuse for your insulting comments.

Jesus, to whom I guess you pray, explicitly sought the least among men as children of God. The poor, the sick, the hungry, the downtrodden.

Likewise, the incomplete image of America that you so vapidly worship simply does not exist. Instead, you ignore and subjugate the very basis on which this country was founded. That being, the moral belief that every man is inherently endowed by the creator with inalienable right to Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. The Statue of Liberty, which greeted so many of our ancestors and ancestors of our friends and family, explicitly shines the beacon of freedom to the world, calling for the tired, the poor, the huddled masses yearning to be free.

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Shame on you.

I also look forward to November.

When the American representative democratic process, which recently elected an African-American man to the highest position in the world, will prove that people of your ilk, who have an unfortunate lack of understanding of the basic moral tenets of this country, are marginalized and the rest of the country moves forward without you to create a more perfect union.

Hey Ethan, your a regular one man majority. What do the progressives pay you to race around the Internet all day long spreading BS. Dixie is a real American, and I'm proud of her. You on the other hand, are a metro-sexual twit dispensing left wing talking points.

Mike L, I'm sorry you disagree with the Declaration of Independence, the words written on the Statue of Liberty, and the teachings of Jesus Christ.

And I'm sorry that you feel the need to turn those words, the basis for our country's morals and our standing in the world as a beacon of freedom, into a right/left partisan issue. They are not partisan and they are certainly not talking points.

Shame on you.

Btw, in your comment, the proper grammatical usage of the contraction for "you are" is "you're," not "your". Just thought you may want to know that for future reference.

Btw, I am a real American too.

Ethan.

a) Keep your religion out of politics.

b) The poem on the statue is a nice sentiment and nothing else.

c)It is poor manners to correct someone's grammar in public.

The starting point of the discussion was the comment that the Tea Party was predominantly "white" and male. You seem to assume that fact to be a black mark against the movement. If so why?

Ethan, while you were striving in your English class, I was teaching my daughter to field strip an AR15, hunt, rig a trot line, and grow vegetables. Those are talents that have a lot more worth than your expertise with contractions. Which by the way, are frowned on in formal writing. My sentence should have been- Hey Ethan, you are a regular one man majority.

"Quotes" please!

This is the whole problem, quit wasting time on idiots!

jerseyman,

I was responding to a comment from Dixie in which she not only insulted an entire race, but explicitly mentioned religion in the context of politics. I reminded her that the Christian faith -- and much of the moral sway of our country since its founding -- is based on the Judeo-Christian morals and the teachings of Jesus Christ.

I find it ludicrous that you would have a problem with my comment but not hers. Or maybe you agree with her and wish to cast your lot with the racists and those who favor greed and material wealth over such basic tenets of modern society as the Golden rule? That's on you, sir.

Mike L, I have no problem with a rural lifestyle, and, in fact, I encourage it even amongst city-dwellers and suburbanites, particularly sustainable agriculture and subsistence hunting and fishing. I grew up in a rural setting and enjoy many of the aspects of such a lifestyle. Conversely, you seem to think that people who have a more formal education are of lesser value to society than people who live in non-rural settings. As with jerseyman, that sentiment is entirely on you. Good luck with that.

My point in making my comments is simply that the racist sentiments expressed in some of the comments on this thread are abhorrent.

jerseyman, I will answer your question:

"You seem to assume that fact to be a black mark against the movement. If so why?"

Not at all. I have no problem with the demographics of the tea party movement. None whatsoever. I have a problem with the messaging of a large part of the movement. I think they are substantively incorrect in their political assertions. And I think that the movement is largely made up of disaffected conservatives (i.e. conservatives who are no longer aligned with the Republican Party). And I have a problem with media reports that the tea parties are comprised of a broad swath of political philosophy, when they are clearly made up of people further to the Right than most moderate Republicans of days gone bye. It is largely a conservative movement, and should be reported as such.

Mike L, jerseyman:

Do you agree that overt racism is bad?

A simple yes/no will suffice.

I'll check back for your answers. Thx.

Oops, minor correction:

Conversely, you seem to think that people who have a more formal education are of lesser value to society than people who live in rural settings (not NON-rural)...

Sorry, looking fw to your replies.

Mike L? jerseyman? Oh well. True to form. They won't speak out against racist commenters, they won't answer whether or not they they feel that overt racism is a bad thing, and they argue against the Judeo-Christian morals upon which our country was founded.

And people wonder why the Tea Parties have a bad name?

Just look at yourselves people. Who is right and who is wrong in this debate? Racists and their defenders, or the many positive examples of Judeo-Christian morals that can be found throughout our country's history and world history?

Answer that for yourself, people. I challenge you. More importantly, YOU should challenge YOURSELF on this very important topic.

Ethan,

Dixie never mentioned race... just a fashion style adopted by the entitlement generation.

Yes, the TEA party is a conservative movement... what of it? Fiscal responsibility, fewer laws that are more effectively enforced and grounded in the constitution. Limited federal government, stronger state governments who can more effectively represent their peoples wishes.

Overall the Federal government should not be allowed to be "generous" with our tax dollars. If we wish to be generous then we will. If not then no. We "the People" should get full credit for our generosity or lack thereof, the government should get neither credit nor say in our generosity.

As to Jesus, name a single person forgiven their sins who did not ask for forgivness... So even Jesus made people work for their wage... Nothing is more difficult than turning from your sinfull ways and asking forgivness from those you wronged.

as to your question to Jerseyman:
"Do you agree that overt racism is bad?"

Yes, and your overt discrimination is terrible.

As to the education, you fail by equating the cost of the education with the quality of the education. Too many Ivy League grads think peaches come in a can. How can you have wisdom, when you clearly can not or will not understand the basics of human life. Human life, not animal life, not the life of the "God Mother GAIA" or what ever you people seem to worship.

Drop you guys off in the wilderness and let mother nature take care of you... You will build a house of bones.

Drop conservatives off in the wilderness and we will build a city, which you will try to take over and turn into an entitlement state. Else you will decry that we have somehow defaced the "Enviroment God of Gore" and must now pay restitution.

wow interesting stuff, do you have any more info on this...

HHMMM, America without Whites. What a great place that will be. NOT

I think cufflinks are the next fad in mens fashion. There's really no other accessory a man can wear that can add so much to his looks without subtracting from his class and style. Jewelry, wild clothing styles, and other eye catching trends are great, but none have the class that cufflinks provide. Most men do not understand how much it can reinforce their appearance.
